Well, seeing as a new year and a new decade is upon us (already started for some board members), what were the highlights for you this year?

I had made the new year's resolution last year to try (or at least learn) something new every day and I pretty much did it. I started working for my paper, took up a couple active hobbies, tried all sorts of new food and activities, went to many new places, met a lot of amazing people and made some outrageous friends.

2010's going to have its bumps, but it's looking pretty good.

I remember hearing about that and shuddered, Valhalla. I think it's because there was a certain charm and magic to Ray Harryhausen's effects that should they use CG or what have you, it just wouldn't be the same.

Now I don't feel those remaking it are trying to take away from it or anything (I mean, Liam Neeson as Zeus! Hawt), and I'm sure I'll go see it, it's just when they announced this thing was coming the first thought that came to mind was, "Oh Sweet Georgia Brown, WHY?!"

In other news, I can't believe they're rebooting "The Crow."

And there's talk of a Buffy reboot sans Whedon.

The Terminator franchise is an interesting beast.

First movie in 1984. It's a success.

T2, still with James Cameron on board alongside Linda Hamilton and Ahnold, is handled by Carolco and distributed by TriStar. It's thousands of times better than the first. It's a huge success and permanently plasters itself in American culture.

Carolco later filed bankruptcy due to the fantastic failure of "Cutthroat Island" (the most expensive cinematic flop in history) on top of their another little big budget bomb by the name of "Showgirls." Due to this, they cannot make T3.

T3 is put on the backburner in hopes that it'll one day see light.

Twelve years later, and now without most of the main actors (still have Ahnold) and Cameron, they put out T3. Fans are mixed, mostly disapproving. Though it profited, it still made much less than its older siblings.

Several more years roll around and Halcyon, an independent company, picks up the rights to make "Salvation." Following this, Christian Bale is offered the role of Marcus, but demands to play John Connor, causing the story to have to be adjusted for more scenes with Connor. T4, considered a reboot, hits theaters and breaks even with a little extra to pay off the lawsuits.

And now ... Halcyon has filed for bankruptcy, and is about to auction of the Terminator rights.

Now, I do agree that there are some great reboots out there (I thoroughly enjoyed "Star Trek," and could not stop laughing during "Punisher War Zone"), and I also loved T4 (which was supposed to be the start of a new trilogy, but with the bankruptcy that may be in question).

In regards to the Kate Brewster and Judgment Day consistencies between Ts 3 and 4, I think they kept that because should they leave those out the casual fans would throw a fit. Just easier to leave the big stuff in. On top of which, I think most people figured if they show John Connor in the future, it's the soldier/general fighting machines that they remembered so fondly from T2's beginning.

To be perfectly honest, the original's pretty cheesy.

What makes it special was Ray Harryhausen's claymation effects. Like the argument about a Back to the Future reboot not having the feeling of that decade of which the original was made, in this case it just wouldn't have Ray's magic. Now granted we're in an era where newer and "better" looking effects can be thrown together on a computer, it's just not the same.

For some reason the thought of redoing that one kept reminding me of the episode of "South Park" where Trey Parker and Matt Stone came out to say that now that computer technology is available to them, they'd always meant to have the characters CG'd with AT-AT walking around inthe background of some shots instead of using just crappy old construction paper to put the show together.

Posted on 01-07-10 01:37 AM, in How was 2009 for you? Link
I started filling this out a few days ago. Ending up PMing it to myself to finish later. Seeing as I'm just hanging out in a drafty warehouse waiting for Brandon to get done with band practice so we can go drinking with work peeps, I'll just wrap this up now.

1) Was 2009 a good year for you?
- Absolutely. It had some bruises, but it was definitely good.

2) What were your favorite moments of the year?
- Whoa boy. What springs to memory first would probably be the Arizona trip this past week, throwing axes Conan O'Brien threw, interviewing Seth Green and Thomas Jane, interviewing the man who caught Saddam, and the entire trip to Northern California just before summer.

3) What was your least favorite moment of the year?
- Probably almost dying from the combination of sunstroke and dehydration.

4) Where were you when 2009 began?
- Marty and Becky's house.

5) Who were you with?
- Several friends, Rocky veterans mostly.

6) Where will you be when 2009 ends?
- I was at Isa's with several people from the DT staff.

7) Who will you be with when 2009 ends?
- I was with DT staffers, their friends, and was on the phone with Brandon at midnight.

8) Did you keep your new years resolution from 2008?
- For the most part. It was simply to try/learn something new every day.

9) Do you have a new years resolution for 2010?
- It's pretty much the same resolution. Seems pretty fun and handy.

10) Did you fall in love in 2009?
- In a sense.

11) If yes, with who?
- Brandon and I adopted a new kitty: Tiki.

12) If yes, do they know?
- I hope so.

14) Did you have fun in 2009?
- Definitely.

15) Did you breakup with anyone in 2009?
- Nope.

16) Did you make any new friends in 2009? Favorites?
- Sure did. No favorites, but Jeremiah, Patrick, Ashleigh, Isa, Brittny, Damon, Greg, Eric, and many others are definitely up there.

17) What was your favorite holiday of 2009?
- Free Comic Book Day and Dia de los Muertos, as always.

18) What was your favorite month of 2009?
- May for faire season and visiting Lee, going to Maker Faire, and wandering around San Francisco.
- July for being in the middle of con season with two conventions in it (AX and Comic-Con)
- November for all the Dia de los Muertos, Pacific Media Expo, meeting the man who captured Saddam, Sensei's signing, the Boggards concert followed by Liz's party at the strip club, and the roadtrip to and around Arizona.
- December for another roadtrip to Arizona, hiking in the snow along a creek, different hike to a waterfall, trying a lot of different foods, Lee visiting and going places with him, knife-throwing with Shelby, there's just too much about it that was really good.

19) Did you stay anywhere outside of your hometown in 2009?
- A few places. Stayed with Lee up in Fremont. Stayed in Chula Vista for Comic-Con. Stayed with Brandon's grandma a few times in Arizona.

20) Did you lose anyone close to you in 2009?
- No one REALLY close this year. I sort of found out earlier this year that my dojo's leader passed away a couple years ago, and heard about my old math professor's son passing away just before Christmas of last year. It's just been terrible late notices.

21) What was your favorite book of 2009?
- "Memories of my Melancholy Whores," probably. Read it while waiting waiting to see if I would get picked for a jury. It's pretty poignant.

22) What was your favorite movie that came out in 2009?
- There's a few. I saw a few new things, but either the new "Star Trek" movie, "Watchmen," "Up," or "Princess and the Frog."

23) What was the worst movie of 2009?
- Transformers 2 hands down. "Wolverine" not far from that. And though it was far from worst, I was disappointed with "Inglorious Basterds."

24) What was your favorite song from 2009?
- Nothing new. Mostly '70s and '80s stuff from all the hanging out in college bars. Most new songs haven't been worth listening to.

25) What was your favorite record from 2009?
- The only new record I bought was Bitter and Stout. So it wins by default.

26) How many concerts did you see in 2009?:
- Not sure as it depends on the definition of concert. If bar shows and singers/bands at conventions count, then I have no idea. There've been WAY TOO MANY of those. But if you're talking one I paid a lot of money for tickets to and had to stand through most of it surrounded by screaming people, it's four, I think.

27) Did you have a favorite concert in 2009?
- Metallica, last month. Especially cool with binoculars.

28) Did you drink a lot of alcohol in 2009?
- More than any other year I think. My co-workers are trying to assassinate my liver.

29) Did you do a lot of drugs in 2009?
- Outside of the alcohol, didn't touch anything else.

30) How many people did you sleep with in 2009?
- Un, senor.

31) What was the weirdest moment of 2009?
- There's a few. The most publicized was probably the Pumpkin Launch when someone built a cannon and shot a pumpkin and medicine ball through the Titan Stadium score board. What seconds that would probably be when I was up to my ankles in a fish orgy or the 40-something-year-old cougar hitting on me and kissing me sloppily next to my mouth

32) What did you do for your birthday?
- Watched old cartoons, played in an old playground near L.A., played in an arcade in Little Tokyo while eating mochi, ate rattlesnake sausage for lunch, did grave rubbing in an old L.A. cemetery, and then ate Lebanese food for dinner. Had Greek pastries in place of cake and ice cream.

33) What did you do for Halloween?
- Went to the Pumpkin Launch then later that night went to Universal Studios' Halloween Horror Nights with Brandon and his aunt and brother. The Rocky Horror tribute they had was really good minus the fact that no one in the audience understood or liked the call-outs.

34) What did you do for Thanksgiving?
- Had it with Brandon's family in Arizona. Following dinner we went hiking on one of the nearby mountains.

35) What did you do for Christmas?
- Celebrated the first half of the day with my parents, Brandon, and a family friend. Then drove out to Arizona with Brandon and his brother and sister.

36) How much money did you spend in 2009?
- You got me. I know I left 2009 with a couple bucks in my bank account and about four in my wallet. A LOT of money came into my possession, though, while quickly departing it.

37) What was your proudest moment of 2009?
- Probably getting interviews with a good chunk of the "Robot Chicken" creative team or getting a bull's eye throwing an ax. Hearing the Daily Titan is one of the top 50 most viewed college news Web sites in the U.S. was also pretty damn sweet since we're the only Cal State on the list, one of only 5 California schools on there, and we just relaunched our site in August.

38) What was your most embarrassing moment of 2009?
- Not entirely certain. Probably when Rocky Liz started playing with my bra in front of some of the editors who came to see Brandon perform.

39) If you could go back in time to any moment of 2009 and change something, what would it be?
- Hmm, there's nothing that really warrants changing. Maybe go back to tell myself to not get so easily irritated all the time. No particular day, but getting annoyed easily seemed to detract from a couple of the good times.

40) What are your plans for 2010?
- I actually don't know. This month: celebrate Brandon's and my birthday, make a run to Northern California to hang with Lee, start classes, start writing for the paper again, and see if I can raise $3000 by February. As to the rest of 2010 ... may it go well.

Yep, definitely fuck office politics. I've got people calling me in tears now because of bullshit raging in the office. I'm not even going to be an editor next semester and I just want to be left alone in terms of the side-joining shenanigans. I'm fucking neutral, guys. Stop hitting me up to join your movements and attending secret meetings. Or on the other side, people calling me into their offices wanting me to name names and spill what dirt I know, then later others from that side sending e-mails asking for allies.

Seriously, what part of, "I DON'T WANT TO BE A PART OF THIS!!!" doesn't anyone understand?

I wrote your goddamn e-mail, OK? If you're removed from office that's all on you.

And you other guys. I love you, I'll still go drinking with you, but for the love of whatever deity you worship, stop asking me to sign my name to anything or appear in public like I'm on your side.

How the hell am I so integral that, to quote BOTH sides' arguments here, that if I "don't join [their] side, I make [their] argument weaker"?!

There is no gracefully bowing out here. Despite everyone going, "It's OK. We understand if you don't want to get into the drama," I'm still inundated with demands for declaration of loyalty.

Ah, fuck it.

It seems like there are several calls that this is fake, but nothing more than speculation.

I don't know. Eggs are like rocks when they're thrown at you. Not that I know from personal experience, but they're pretty fucking hard. I don't think anyone's girlfriend is just going to allow eggs being thrown at her like that for a fake break-up video.

I haven't seen anything else on these people and I've been Googling the hell out of it.

Until I see otherwise, this looks pretty real to me.

2010's going all right so far. Aside from the work drama during winter break, got to be an extra in a music video, went to a mini-Renaissance faire in Hollywood, went to a couple museums and parties, and hiked a lot.

Watched the awe-inspiring sunset from Dante's View yesterday.

This is the worst I've seen. And I worked at freaking Kaiser Permanente where office politics are in-fucking-sane.

At the Viking, you submitted your applications for editing positions to the adviser and he chose who went where along with picking who was editor-in-chief. He was pretty flexible and, though many people hated Pat's bureaucracy, it worked. Both writers and editors were in their respective classes and were doing the Viking for a grade (though I was frequently an editor without being in the editing class).

Where I am now, the writers are the ones in the class and editors are paid to stay. The executive editor is selected by a panel of professors and department chairs, along with the ASI president (seriously). The chosen executive editor then hires the rest of the staff and figures out how much each person gets paid (it's not consistent from semester to semester).

Unfortunately the guy who got exec isn't very well-liked and many in staff are trying to get rid of him. There's no one I have issues with on a personal level. I consider them all good friends. But damn, on a professional level, the gloves are coming off all around. I love them all, and we all get along, but they aren't getting along with each other.

So pretty much, no the Viking was never this intense. I mean, people disliked each other and many frequently got immature. I think where it's been its worst was when LBCC's leaders told the professors and other staff not to talk to us and that same semester were the rapes that the police were trying to cover up.

I had this really weird dream last night. I found this church that was a sect of Christianity which makes a point in mutilating animals and laughing at them because they believe that it shows God's will of humans being superior to the other creatures of the world.

Though, in the dream I didn't witness them mutilate an animal, I saw many of their pets without normal faces or bodies. And I didn't stop them or tell them this was wrong. I felt physically ill with their actions, but for some reason I couldn't leave and kept talking to people like there was nothing wrong.

After thinking about the dream all morning, the only way I can explain it is maybe it's my own conflicts with the Prime Directive (yep, Star Trek reference, but it makes sense): respect other people's cultures and don't get involved.

I do maintain that people have a right to be how they want, especially in terms of religion, but there are some things that I just can't respect. Like the Westboro Baptist Church. They go on about homosexuality and other lifestyle choices in the most negative ways on top of going to military funerals to protest in a smug, "Good! God is killing you all off for being fag-enablers and allowing homos to exist in America!!" fashion.

I've always tried to boil it down that while they are jerks and ignorant, they aren't physically harming anyone and are entitled to their own opinion and their fair share of the First Amendment. But being a "fag-enabler" as they would call a person like myself, it makes me sick to know that people like them exist.

I dunno, there are other ways to interpret it, I suppose. Maybe it's a vegetarianism thing?

Guy has eye glasses tattooed on his face:

These prison inmates... well, you'll see.

Now while it can be argued that the latter one is cool, I would never get that done without a team of doctors and scientists telling me that was safe first and secondly I would NEVER get this done at a prison. Most tattoos are done there with freaking safety pins and whatever else they can find with whatever they can get to make ink.

Since Crazy is the place for memes and other such ramblings of the sort, I figured I'd start this thread here.

My last year's new year's resolution was to try or learn one new thing every day, and on reflection, I think the drive to seek out new things to do and see and partake in is good.

So I figured I'll challenge other board members to try/learn/go to/read/watch/etc one new thing every day for a year. It's fairly simple and it'll do you good.

For the sake of simplicity and including as many things as possible, your new thing can include starting/finishing a new book, watching a new show or movie, going somewhere you haven't been before, taking up a new hobby, trying a new menu item at a restaurant, or anything that you could consider a new experience. The whole point is expand your mind and broaden your horizons.

So yeah, post away when you try something new. You don't HAVE to post every day, and hell, you could treat this like the "What are you reading/watching/listening to?" threads.

Happy adventures!

A few of the new experiences for this week:
- Went on a couple new trails in Griffith Park
- Had a chili fries burrito (Not bad)
- Started playing guitar. Can now play the intro to "Nothing Else Matters" without looking
- Tried Senor Baja (amazing fish tacos)
- Read the 5 Scott Pilgrim books that are out
- Saw gold from Troy. Learned that if the Trojan War was actually fought against Greeks, it would be over controlling trade in the waters around Turkey
- Learned that apparently you can get a whole turkey at the Popeye's in the Brea Mall

Just to balance out those above, here's 240 science-inspired tattoos. Many of them are REALLY cool, some are bad, and several leave you wondering:

The butterfly made from Darwin's finches in one of my favorites.

Some of them are absolutely INSANE. Like they got their whole back done up with molecules. Way too many DNA strands, though.

This one's my other favorite: http://blogs.discovermagazine.com/loom/science-tattoo-emporium/?nggpage=12&pid=41

So the glasses guy posted pictures on his Flickr account. Kinda interesting that he includes in the tags Ray Ban. Several people are alleging this is fake, saying it must be a viral marketing campaign. I dunno, in the after-shots it does almost look drawn on with Sharpie. Hmmm, we'll find out eventually, I'm sure.
