Dafaq?!

But seriously, it is a neat idea in a way. S'not something I would do personally, but it IS interesting to say the least.

I'm stupid when it comes to world affairs, so I can't go off on a feministic rant without knowing how their culture operates...

I've been a little slow catching up on this one, actually...but I get all choked up every time I look at the pictures....the video...Seriously. Like...that's Mars we're looking at. What it looks like. Not a computerized documentary narrated by Sam Neil or Morgan Freeman--Which I'm totally NOT knocking. It's just easier to convey how...just amazing this is...

Things seem to happen in clusters...it's really a shame.

Back to the Temple shooting though...Media bias IS a problem, don't get me wrong, but shoving that debate aside for a second, I really do believe that there was less coverage out of respect for the Sikhs. Correct me if I'm wrong, but they're a fairly private people, aren't they? Sometimes the media finds a way to be respectful.

Sometimes. I remember a few years ago a psycho went to an Amish schoolhouse and shot and killed some of the little girls. The Amish people are a pretty big part of Pennsylvania, and sometimes I forget that not everyone is as exposed to them, so forgive me, but I don't know if any of you remember hearing about something like that. The Amish are extremely private and still pretty removed...and the media didn't blow up the situation NEARLY as much as it does everything else it seems. Local coverage got the information out and all, but otherwise, respected their privacy.

Perhaps its a similar situation?

Absolutely. Maybe its because I'm still pretty young and definitely cocky, but when it comes to the two types of people to get through to, the opposition who has intellectual backing at least, and the opposition who just scream and yell, like you said....the screamers are scary because they get the most exposure, and even though it may be bad exposure for the individual, it's good exposure for their cause. **cough**teaparty**cough** And that can be difficult to beat...but at that point, since reason isn't going to work, I've always just went with the "Well, lets see who's a better salesperson here."

And even though the Supreme Court ruled for it...there's still opposition and they're still going to work their magic as much as possible. And let them. That's what this country is about. But I dunno...Obama is the first one to take a piss on this third rail, to this caliber, in a long time. I'm not a crazy fan of his, and that's a different subject, but no matter what side I'm on, I'm partially just excited to see this happening.

Something that I've been more proactive about than...ever...and yet something I've felt in my gut I've been wanting to do for my entire life.

I'm committing myself to writing this damned story. I've literally been losing sleep thinking about it, jotting down ideas. Real life experiences have inspired it, of course, but with a twist of humor and dramatization because...well, its a story...

Point of this thread is this: I admire the literary/creative prowess of everyone on here. I will be popping up with questions/opinions/general discussion in between posting each bit of the story as it comes along.

First two things is this:

1) If you were reading a story that was meant to have a "Outsiders" feel, would you prefer to read from a boy or a girl's perspective? (It's a technique that I enjoy using. Writing my first draft with heavy tones of my inspiration, and then taking each draft and plucking away from the "sameness" and adding my own to it. Odd thing about "The Outsiders" is, not only is it an excellent story and one of my favorites...but I identify with it REALLY well, and anyone who's been here as long as I have, if not longer, and remember my rantings, you'd see it too. Although, in all honesty, I probably only think it's the same because of the "friends are like family" and experiences in an impoverished, terrible neighborhood setting in which I actually grew up. (Yes, I'm babbling)

2) First person? (which is where my gut has been taking me thus far...) or third person omniscient? I'm reading a 3rd person omniscient story now, and I'm really digging it, so I'm considering trying that for either something else in the future or using it for my baby here that I'm developing.

First person? If so, boy or girl? Third person omniscient? If so, still have a main focus on a boy or girl character?

So, I'd like to moderate some mini-discussions in this thread. I would love nothing more than to see these discussions take off and take on threads of their own...but here, I want to keep things simpler, blunt, and informative.

So, I'm going to start with the first question. I don't care what political party you are. I'm hoping we're all willing to educate ourselves enough to question even that which we support. Nothing in this specific thread is meant as an attack or to prove any points to the extent of trying to convince others. Let's just share the "answers" and the sources of our information. Hopefully we'll see more threads popping up in this forum as a result...

Question number one...Can anyone tell me why the Republicans aren't offering any explanation to Mitt Romney's constant flip-flopping? John Kerry was attacked mercilessly, as he should have bee. But why don't these things seem to be a problem for Romney? Why can he publicly announce one thing, and then say something to the complete and utter contrary the next? He isn't being attacked as hard as he should be for it, it seems...and his supporters aren't talking about it enough it seems either.

I don't care if you think I'm misinformed or if you agree with me...just...support your replies with sources. I want to read/watch/listen to as much as possible. Knowledge for knowledge's sake....that's what's inspired my interest in politics, so...

Go.

The "Even Fox News is calling him out." bit though...Paul Ryan DID flat out lie in that speech, don't get me wrong, but no matter what side you're on, strategy is strategy. No one is perfect. However, when running for public office, one of the worst things to happen to you isn't your imperfections. It's when someone else showcases them for you. As the Fox article mentioned...it's about strategically airing your own dirty laundry...

I don't see this as "Even Fox...." I see this as political strategy. He didn't air his own dirty laundry, so Fox, a supporter, was the next best thing. They got their article out there a little TOO quickly for it to have been for any other reason but that.

But, my main question was this...why isn't he getting enough shit for it? I watched the RNC last week (through MSNBC though.) and they aired all sorts of clips of him literally saying one thing, and then either saying something TOTALLY to the contrary, or denying he ever said it. I'm not trying to incite opinions on WHAT he's saying and then saying differently later. Abortion, for example...this isn't a question about whether or not he's right to be for or against it...it's a question to why isn't he challenged for a response to stick with and chastised...I mean bad, he's only getting tiny slaps on the public wrist for this...why is this working? Why is he still getting supporters that aren't saying "Woah...wait a minute." It's okay to support someone who isn't perfect. It's even better to see the vices but still stick by your guns...but...why are they ignoring the vices?

Not a bad strategy at all, actually. The blow, which was inevitable, came MUCH softer since it came from a supporter, which again, is second best to it coming from yourself. If you take away the political affiliation and just look at it this way "someone was imperfect. It came out publicly. They/their supporter acknowledged it." is MUCH softer than it being acknowledged by opposition or even neutral forces. It's a strategy that can work with a multitude of things, not just politics. It's subliminally saying (or seeming to say) "Shit. I fucked up. I'm going to be honest and admit that and therefore fix it."

But I highly doubt that its going to be a problem for the Republicans in the long run. The attention they're getting aren't calling him out on being so damned blatant it seems. I was hoping True would add her two cents. The world is a big place. I think its foolish to think in absolutes just because your own personal world is one way....and what I'm seeing in my own, much smaller world, is that no one, not even his opposition are shedding light on this. Opposition is pointing it out, but that's about it. They're not DRIVING the point. They're not forcing him to face that particular issue. They're just criticizing...

So, I'm just trying to take advantage of the fact that we're from all over the place here...maybe someone can point something out like "No, you're wrong." and show me some of their local news articles where he is being challenged. I can only say that in my own backyard, we are not...and that's a damned shame. If someone I supported was like that, I'd still want them to own up to it...so again, it's not even about whether or not you support Mitt Romney...it's about why are people turning such a blind eye? I know there are bigger issues...but...c'mon...if Obama wins, Romney will have given him a run for his money, that's painfully obvious...and I'm not too comfortable with someone potentially leading the country who gets away with blatantly lying not only to others but to himself!

Awwww shit. <3

Um. I play video games. I draw sometimes still. Been writing. A lot. Well, as much as I can, cuz I'm a paralegal now. Not settling either. Soon as I get my BA, I'm running off to law school. Going to school "part-time" for the moment. I say that in quotes because a lot of the work I'm doing at my job, I have several judges and my firm backing and signing off so that they take the place of some of my classes toward my BA. By the time I'm done, I'll even be able to skip some law school courses. Not too many though, and none of the basic classes, since they cover nearly everything, and the work I'm doing is a little more centered on specific things. Either way though, I'm not settling for anything less than Yale material.

Oh. And fart jokes are still the funniest things I have ever heard.

You know, I'm not entirely sure. My firm does personal injury, social security, workers' compensation, auto accidents, and general litigation. I never thought in a million years that any of those things could be interesting, but they are. What I like most is the firm advertises by word of mouth. You won't see us on a bulletin on the side of a bus. So, the cases we get...they're legit. Going into this, I thought there'd be a lot of fakers, for lack of better term. But there really aren't. I have two cases out of 300 where I'm like "Really?" So, I have 298 cases where I feel like I'm legitimately helping people. It's nice. I really like it. I might stick with something like that.

But I'm still keeping options open considering I haven't touched law school yet. I wanna wait until after my first year to really start limiting my options. Except for criminal law. That's typically not good on the family, so to speak. But if I could get my way, I'd always work with the lawyer I'm working with now. In February I was hired as a file clerk. His father, who is the head of the firm, is also one of my history professors. I've taken 5 history courses with him. So, when he saw my resume on his son's desk, he was so excited that he convinced him to offer me a secretarial position. In the meantime, since I had all the academics done, I applied for the paralegal studies program at the community college here, and I'm officially done in October. So, I'll officially be a paralegal by then, but they're paying me like one now since I'm capable of doing the work. We just have a REALLY good working relationship, and if by the time I'm ready for law school, they're talking about guaranteeing me a position as an associate, I'm pretty sure I'd jump on it.

Plus, my boss and I have been getting into local politics together, and I am totally enamored with the kind of potential candidate he'd be, so we've been working on that sort of thing, so who knows...if I came out of law school and he was ready and asked me to go along with him, might work in politics directly, instead. **shrugs**

Longer than I wanted this to be. :p

I had a long ass response typed out yesterday...but then my internet shat on me. Probably for the better. It would have sounded stupid.

I am by no means saying that the level to which this is being taken is right. Not in the least bit...but we go apeshit too when we're insulted. However, when I was forming this opinion, it was only after the first attack, I'm catching up on most of the reading this morning, actually...so for now I'll just second Astrophel's sentiments.

HA!

Seriously...Darwinism...'bout time. I don't wish this shit on people, but sometimes, when it happens...it's like..."See kids? Drugs are bad." and I'm therefore not sorry this happened.

I must say, as far as the "Yolo" phrase is concerned...I never had to deal with it seriously. I'm pretty sure every time I've heard it in person, it was from the voice of someone making fun of the notion, rather than taking it seriously...so my personal experiences haven't been as annoying as they could be. :p

Haha. True. Oddly enough, he followed my advice. I told him that right now, he's just a "nice guy with some brains." he needs to be more. So I said that if I were him, I'd use the money and resources he had to simply make more money and resources, only make those two things through actually DOING the things he wants to do. The only thing on his record is that he hasn't done anything wrong. That's not enough, so I told him to step away from the thought of title, and work on those other things instead.

Surprisingly, he listened to me. And put me in charge of staffing it all. I'm still flabbergasted over that one. But we've got a few good things going on. A quarter of a million dollars was made to go toward our local Children's Hospital which was in need of MAJOR funds so they could do research, among other things. Otherwise, I'm still pretty new at this. I know I'm allowed to talk about it at this point, since we're not doing anything but being benefactors...and we aren't even raising the money from people we're strong arming. I simply looked up who wanted to donate their money to the cause, but didn't want to do the legwork. So I showed up, said "gimme your money, I'll do the legwork." and they're getting most of the credit.

But he's young. I told him not to rush. You can't do anything on a national level if you don't get some sort of experience, so if local experience is what he wants, then take a year or so and get some things under his belt. You don't get anywhere here locally unless you run on the things you DID, not the things you want to do.

So as to not dodge the question like a typical politician though, the answer is we don't know.

Edit: Not "from strong-arming." I meant "BY strong-arming." We're not bullying anyone. Lol.
