I plan on becoming a programmer as a career choice when I am old enough and have enough experience to work on major products so it is best to get a lot of knowledge absorbed into my brain now instead of having to learn it a hard way later on.
Languages I currently know (not including mark up) QuickBasic I'm taking a course on C++ next year in my school But between the X amount of months I have off on summer vacation I'm looking for another language to learn. Suggestions and help would be appreciated. My focus of programming in the future would to be working on programming hit seller games like The Elder Scrolls series. |

Definately the whole C family. If you plan to do anything in gaming, you'll need this. Also, the web authoring languages (Java, JavaScript, PHP, MySQL, Oracle, etc). If you ever want to do cell phone gaming, BREW and J2ME are the more popular standards followed by C and Symbian OS. Palm OS programming isn't far behind.
I'm in videogame mode right now. |

I'm not a fan of cellphone games, I'm more of a computer gamer.
What are the varients of the C family and maybe I can get to know them all over a few years? |

If your into gaming companies (Which I dunno if thats what this subject is about) You should go with Blizzard or Valve...the company stocks are going up pretty nicely due to their best sellers...If your going to work with them in the next 4 years, you might get a pretty amazing pay...
When my uncle worked for ID back in the day he made a pretty good abount of money due to the fact he was a level designer...He pretty much knows his junk on programming and networking... A little off topic I dont know any languages...My uncle tried to teach me when I was interested...all I knew was binary coding...or something like that... but I know that when I get DSL, hes going to get me my own Internet Radio station for free as a graduation gift...He owns the Radio station "Sunny 100" and he owns 35% of the shares of this major business in colombus GA called TSYS...so he has them hookups...(Wow, that was a little off topic....) But yeah, Im pretty much saying that if your interested in joining a gaming company, learn more about the two companies I told you about...I did some research on them for my buisness class and they offer their own classes for newcomers...Just to point that out (Last edited by Master Sajin on 04-27-06 12:30 AM) |

I suggest learning C/C++ and PHP.. once you master those any other language will be extremely easy to just fall into, especially Perl.

Perl is awesome too. We just had an opening for a QA Engineer at EA. It requires knowledge of, well, lemme cut and paste:
# Strong technical knowledge and familiarity with various wireless handsets (especially network settings for specified carriers) and platforms (such as BREW, J2ME, Windows Mobile) # 1 year of experience/background in software quality assurance # Familiarity with web technologies and protocols (HTML, XHTML, WAP, WML). # Familiarity with standard HTTP status codes. # Familiarity with Windows XP |

What is Perl mostly used for and isn't PHP used as a webpage program thingy. I know this board is programmed in PHP. So PHP would be a web applications type of language correct?

Well, Yes. PHP is mostly used for dynamic web development but I just wrote an app that renames MP3 files with it on a *nix type enviroment.
Almost any scripting language can be used as a web oriented language as long as the server supports it. Perl included. Perl is one of the most C like scripting languages out there along with PHP. |

What would you recommend for books when learning these languages. Whether it be a specific title, author, anything else just list them. (Last edited by HoboConductor on 04-27-06 06:45 PM) |

I do not know of any PHP book, but if you want to do PHP, php.net is like the best reference.

Yeah I'd also have to say anything within the C family, because it seems so universal and after learning it, you can find yourself quickly able to adapt to others.
I wish I could program. Then again I probably just don't have the patience. I've taken Visual Basic; didn't care for that. Then took C++, but I think our teacher got into stuff a little too quickly, but it makes sense since most of the students in that class already knew and understood the basics of programming, thought, and stuff. So I didn't fair to well in that class. But yeah, according to one of my friends brothers, who knew a ton about C++ and other languages, he easily taught himself PHP in one day. So yeah. I'm going to teach myself C++ over the summer so that I can easily get 90's and 100's on all my assignments. Though I need one thing from you fellow programmers, I need a recommended book. I don't have much money (no jorb) so the best bang for my dollar would be most appreciated. I don't care about cost really, I just don't want to have to buy multiple books.

I bought the 1001 tips for C/C++ programming book. Picked it up for $22.99AU, reduced from $99.95AU. So if you want C. That's a pretty good book, but don't pay too much for it. When I do plan to learn C, I'll use that book.

If you want to learn C++, Learn C first.
Not only will C++ be easier to pick up having known C, C++ will teach you stuff you can't re-use in C. So it's best to learn C first. |

I see the word microsoft on there, did microsoft create C/C++ and I'm also assuming that you can program in C/C++ on other operating systems correct?

C/C++ are completely standard languages completely devoid of affiliations with Microsoft or Windows.
C# on the other hand.. ;P |
