I think this might be serious...I might have to see a doctor about it. Gah.

Insomnia. I never expected somebody from here to get that, especially at your age. How many things have you tried to get yourself to go to sleep, Gan?

Everything I can think of. Last night, I quite literally knocked myself out to get myself to sleep.

Do you enjoy watching court cases, ones without hurmor? If no, watch court tv.
Do you enjoy watching political debates? If no, watch CSPAN or something of the like. Worked for my friend's older brother. But you should go to see a doctor just incase. |

I sometimes think I may have minor insomia myself. Sometimes at night, I'll sit down and lay down in bed, then instantly I'll start thinking of 10 different things at once, and I just can't stop thinking of "this" and "that", and so on, and it really does keep me up.
On average, it usually takes me a good 45 minutes to an hour for me to fall asleep (yes, most of the time when I'm laying down and really trying to fall asleep). (Last edited by Xeo? on 11-04-05 06:03 PM) |

I used to suffer from extreme insomnia and hyper insomnia now I read or meditate before bed. You just have to get yourself in a routine and get used to it. It's hard and seeing a doctor might help, but really you just have to figure out what works yourself.

I used to get insomnia during the summer months. I wouldn't be able to fall asleep until 7:00 AM or later, and wake up at 9:00 AM or earlier.
Something that might help you... if you go to any drug store (one specifically for pills and vitamins, not somewhere like Fred Meyer or Rite Aid) and ask for "maltonin" or "melatonin," that might work. That is the natural chemical your brain produces when it gets dark that tells you that it's time to go to bed. Your brain might not be producing this chemical, or enough to let you sleep. They get the chemical from plants, as they produce the chemical themselves. It didn't really work on me unless I took 3 or 4 pills (and the maximim recommended in a day is 3 or 4 lol). Another thing. Stay away from electronics. Don't go on your computer after 10:00 or watch any amusing TV shows. Or any TV if you can help it. Reading, like Makura said, can help. Hmm... *thinks* If it keeps happening, ask your doctor about it. Describe your nightly routine, your sleeping patterns, what you eat before bed, etc. Also mention melatonin or maltonin (can't remember which one, and I'm probably not spelling it right) and ask what he things the best thing for you is. Often eating large meals can make you tired, but also be careful because it might have the exact opposite affect on you. (not to mention your meals before bed should be the smallest throughout the day because your body can't make good use of the calories and that's when you gain weight.) What you eat and how much you eat or drink before bed can have a drastic effect on how much and how well you sleep. Good luck. |

Yeah, I used to suffer from insomnia as well. I've found meditation works great, but it takes a bit to get into. Once again for emphasis though, it really works well. And I'm not referring to the buddist lotus position and sounding out "ohm," but more of like mental silence. My trick is to divert attention away from my thoughts and try to focus on everything else (senses-wise) at once. Apart from what you can or rather can't see (because logically, your eyes should be closed since you're trying to sleep), focus on what you hear, feel, and (hopefully should be pleasant or at least non-existant) smell. Somehow, for me at least, placing my attention in my senses helps me to eventually reach that place of mental silence and achieve sleep. Hopefully, it can work for you too. But you don't have to try my way. Best to find whatever works for you. Good luck with the insomnia.

Thanks for the advice, guys. I actually managed to get some sleep last night, but not the whole night. I'll follow your advice tonight and see if it works.

One thing i can suggest: DON'T GO ON THE COMPUTER
I remember one time when i was a lot younger i was playing starcraft and i played all night without realizing it and never got tired, never stimulate the brain when you want to sleep. But supposedly your brain is more active when it's asleep than when you're watching TV so that might help. |

I do sometimes suffer from it. It can be a blessing in disguise, though I tend to not use it as best I can. I could do so much homework and studying with that time and usually I just end up online.

Oh, and like FilteredSight said, concentrating on one thing. That reminded me of something my uncle said worked from him: concentrating on his breathing. It is something constant that is always there in a steady rhythem. If you concentrate on that, he said, it is difficult for your mind to wander.
Hope you rest well tonight as well. |

I have gotten insomia before and it does suck. But now adays I just stay up until I'm ready to plop. I mean I will deprive myself of sleep so that when I try I'm out in 30 seconds or less.

Happens to me sometimes. There's nights I can't get to sleep until 6 AM or later, no matter how tired I am.
As for why I'm currently up at 4 AM... yeeeah, I woke up early. I envisioned peaceful scenes in my mind. Worked quite well. Just avoid waterfalls. (Last edited by Tamarin Calanis on 11-06-05 07:56 AM) |

I think I used to have insomnia. Lately, I've been either too sick to stay up or too tired. High school takes so much out of you. I have eons of work to do, and I only stay up for work that needs to be done. ^.^ So yeah, good luck with the whole getting rid of insomnia thing.

Insomnia used to haunt me . I was awake for a three day stretch a few years ago . Both your emotional and physical state are greatly effected by insomnia . I could hardly walk well into my third day of insomnia . It was more of a stagger . The physical downfall wasn't even the worst . You start to see things that aren't really there or things that aren't really happening ( cords moving , lamps swaying ect ect ) . You lose focus and your mind slowly starts to shut down . It's as if you were torturing yourself because you try so hard for sleep to come but you just can't get to that climax .

Man, whats the OPPOSITE of insomnia? Whatever it is, I must have it. I've been so tired lately, and its not like I've been doing anything too strenuous. I freaking fell asleep in math class - I looked at the clock, fell asleep, and woke up and there were five minutes left of class. These are 82 minute blocks, too. Nobody seemed to notice either.
So, my point is, if you have insomnia, go to math class. And, according to Howard Stern, excessive masturbation can induce sleepiness.... just trying to help! Also, there are some foods that can get you to sleep. Turkey doesn't just make people sleepy because they eat so much on Thanksgiving; apparently there is some sort of chemical within it that makes people sleepy. Same with milk - warming the milk up somehow makes this chemical more powerful. Do the math. Warm milk, Turkey, and beating off. You'll get to sleep soon enough. |
