Here is a section of MSN news that I came across just now.
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/7053335/
After reading the first couple paragraphs I thought it would be a great idea to post a debate here. Apperently some officials don't exactly like the idea of displays of the Ten Commandments on government property saying that they "unconstitutionally entangle church and state, a cultural battle that has splintered lower courts for more than two decades."

What is your opinion on this matter? Do you agree with them or do you think they should be left the way they are as a symbol of what the US was brought upon? In a live vote on MSN 69% of voters said they should stay, while an amazing 31% voted no.

I like how these people forget the freedoms we, as Americans have.

Why can't the Ten Commandments be displayed on government property? Can't the government have this freedom as well? Just because its government property it makes it illegal to put anything religious on it. I think it should stay being a strong Christian...why not? I say the government (people working with it) should have the freedoms we do.

I say yes... because the ten commandments are a significant part of the founding of the USA.... however, I see no reason why other religious symbols or statements can't be on government buildings as well.... as long as the message itself is not offensive in nature...

Okay 1, this was also in Montgomery, Alabama. 2, I think it's over now thanks to "a small group of aetheists and their dogs", and 3, I really don't care. They already have Moses with the ten commandments up in that place leave it at that.

seperation of church and state... why cant ppl comprehend this...? you cant be displaying no damn ten commandments on government property -.-' who cares if this country was founded by it? the reason why it should not be displayed on government property is because the government can not choose one religion over another and display it for all to see. the government's job is to make sure everything is fair and equal, and for them to choose to put the ten commandments is hypocrisy. plus, some people, including me, are offended by it, as with the pledge of allegiance.

w00t what a great use for my 100th post

hey if you look at it this way with the President we have now that's sort of a dream now. This country was founded on separation of church and state, but in the end it turned out that Church was still above everything in the bible belt... Look you know you can put the ten commandments anywhere, I could care less. The problem with people these days is that they aren't happy with what they got now.

As long as there is no violence over something this stupid...What does it matter for petes sake man just ignore it.

This is just like that guy who sued to take "one nation under god" out of the pledge of allegiance. Because his daughter was "physically harmed" by saying the Pledge of Alleigance...FOR GODS SAKE's PEOPLE GET A LIFE...

you know, growing up and having to say the word God actually made me feel dirty and i hated that part of the day. it might not matter to you, but others who do not believe in God are appall with that capital word. and it wouldnt matter if we didnt have to say it, but they make you say it every damn day. i dont recall being forced to say that is an exercise of my freedom of religion.

look if it makes you feel dirty Dont say it then..

The only thing you have to do is stand up and be respectful.

Thats all that is asked of you...

I am an atheist but i was not really bothered by it i just stood and was repsectful.

That is the only thing asked.

let me explain something about seperation of church and state...

the reason for this.... was because 500 years ago.... the Roman Catholic church WAS the same as the government.... the Pope controlled everything whether directly or indirectly.... he told the Monarchs what to do.... how to act....

the seperation of church and state was never to take religion itself out of government... but to take religious leaders influence out of government.... big difference....

If I remember correctly, in my government class we learned that it was illegal in any state to display religious insigina on government property.

meh, I merely stand in respect. I give more respect than the people actually saying the pledge. =/

And as for "500 years ago.." ...The US wasn't really founded until the latter part of the 1700s. that's a bit less than 300 years ago. The founders wanted a complete break of religion dominance in government.

It makes no sense for the ten commandments to be there. Seperation of church and state..it's a total contradiction of the constitution.

[sigh].... do you guys read? at all?

the seperation was to keep church LEADERS out of the government.... to keep them from having control over the monarch or president or whomever....

however, the leader has every right to be religious and there is no good reason why religious symbols on a building shouldn't be allowed... it's not hurting anyone...

it only offends the really stuck up liberal folk

Displaying the ten commandments implies that christianity has something to do with the US itself. Isn't part of being free having the freedom of religion..if they're going to put the ten commandments up they should also put quotes from buddha.. and all the other religions of this country diversity is a big part of this country and we shouldn't contradict that.

I personally don't really give a flying fuck it doesn't bother me and isn't harming me in anyway but for arguements sake I'll stick to what I said before.

well, I'm willing to bet if someone would actually offer some good quotes from some other religious leader, that they might actually get put up there....

possibly....

My justification for leaving them up is that, as was mentioned before, America was formed with some religous aspects in mind. It was part of how the country was created, so the displays should remain as a reminder of that. A little history "lesson", if you will.

Random fact: The majority of the founding fathers of the United States were Diests, not Christians. They are simular, but not really the same... borderline Atheists really.

Now, seeing as I don't follow the Christian religion in any way I can give this as my honest insight. I find it offensive to have the Ten Commandments there. Why? Because it does promote Christianity over other religions. "Oh they should have the right"... so should I then. However, if a courthouse was to put a pentacle on their lawn or in the courthouse at all people would have a meltdown and demand that it be removed. In many areas the same would happen with a Star of David or any other symbol or doctrine. If the 7 gifts of Druidry were posted or the 13 goals of a Wiccan, people would demand them to be removed. Don't even try to say that it isn't true, because you know damn well that it is!

I'm going to put this simply.
The only reason why theres a contraversy going on here is because the ones who raised the problem don't know how to live their own fucking life. They have a problem when somthing decent comes along and must spoil it.

These are the people who would sue you for no fucking reason.

The Ten Commandments is a nice idea. They are not emphasising Christianity, or any other religion, the Ten Commandments are there to help people become a better person. Just like the 8 keys to employability is to help Job Hunters. Its only a coincidence that the Ten Commandmence came from a Religion.

If teh Ten Commandments are taken down, then they'll need to stop teaching Evolution, then they'll need to completly irradicate the words "African America" or "Mexican" from our languages, They'll need to stop any special treatments women may, or maynot get, they'll need to stop giving out Retirement plans to the elderly, they'll need tos top taxing us on every fuckign thing in the world, children under the age of 16 will be givin the right to go to school or not, gas prices will god own...

Do you guys see where I'm getting at?

the ten commandments stand for god and the right way to do things but i think some people dont like god and that is one reason we dont say the pledge any more because some a**hole didnt want his daughter saying under god. Well god is the supreme ruler and if u dont want ur child to say under god then right a not to the teacher for her not to say the pledge but the rest of us might want to show some respect to our country and to god.
