So, left the law firm a few months ago...things just didn't line up right. First of all, my boss got into a pretty bad car accident and was out of commission for a while. Long story short, there's proof of this. However, my hours kept tapering off. And then finally, I was "let go.", told my boss' office was going to be closed down for a while because he was going to be out for an indeterminable amount of time, and his cases needed to be farmed out. As I was leaving, I had them put it to me in writing that THAT was the reason for my departure.
So, I just get a call from the place that I've been interviewed twice by, saying that they called the law firm, and was told, BY THE LAWYER I WORKED FOR, that I was let go for job abandonment. What I WANT to do is go down there and beat the living daylights out of every little poindexter in that office. However, I just sent over the letter I received, and I'm going to see how that goes. Side note, about a month before I was "let go" the head of the firm did something weird. He was always trying to play with my hair anyway, and I was always able to just walk away without thinking much of it. I'm not one for being touched by anyone, even those closest to me, so when someone was saying, in a very grandfatherly way, how they loved my long hair and that it was classy (paraphrasing, it really wasn't that creepy) any inkling of getting close to it was shot down before it COULD be weird. Until one day, he comes up behind me, and is rubbing my lower back. I stepped forward, turned around, and told him that if he ever did that again, that I would break his hands (hindsight, shoulda reported it instead of saying something). Well, this is already long, but something was fishy last month anyway, not going to get into that, and I learned that three other girls before me left the firm because of a groping incident with that lawyer. They were "let go" for one reason of another, but one of the lawyers called in a favor and got them a new job. (Happened to me too, only that job wasn't paying enough, hence looking for this new one.) and because I'm a BAMF at research, I got pretty far into gathering information, and if it comes to it, can get them to testify, I think. At least the two of them. So, anywho...the new place called me today, asking for an explanation, because of course the law firm was on my resume, and since I have nothing to hide, I told them the truth when I was interviewed. Twice. That and they really want to get in touch with my old store manager from GameStop, so they called me to ask if I would be able to get in touch with him and have him call them back. I'm thinking that there's still some hope of being a shoe-in for the job. I can't see why they'd do all of this back and forth, they interviewed other people, ya know? (Le fin. Definitely just high stress and a "wtf" moment here.) |

What a bunch of pricks. Hope the next job proves far superior.
Also, I do agree that you should have reported that shit. He's a fucking lawyer, for crying out loud. He should know how sexual harassment suits are serious business. |

Yup. I mean, it was very stupid of me to not report it. Everything happened so fast, and it didn't phase me as much as it should have. I don't have a dad to go home and cry to for him to walk into a place like that with guns blazing. When I tell you I'm going to break your hands for touching me, everyone who made that mistake AFTER I warned them, did get a broken hand. Plain and simple. (My brother-in-law would go in guns blazing, but he's also a sensitive little guy, and I'm an adult now and we look out for each other instead of just him taking care of me. ) But yeah, very VERY stupid of me. That was in the beginning of November. Then around the end of November, he was trying to get his secretary to come in on Black Friday and work, and she made a big stink about it, saying that she wasn't going to come in and work when he was the only other one there.
That's when I actually DID report it, and while yes, honest to goodness, my boss really was out of commission for a few weeks starting the beginning of December. I was suddenly "let go" for it, the one lawyer called in a favor, got me another job at some gym, I was supposed to be their operation's manager, and once I made it past the probationary period, I was told that making more than 9 bucks an hour was impossible because they have no place to promote me. In the meantime, my cousin tried getting me a job in her building. Her firm wasn't hiring, but she was cool with the other firms. Well, that turned into a fiasco. There was another paralegal there who happened to work at MY old firm, and she had a similar story. I ended up finding out there were two other girls. All three of their stories were a little worse than mine. Doesn't make it right for him to do it, but I'm really thinking that the lawyer who was a little touchy-feely wasn't the kind of guy to keep pushing it if they react the way I did. One girl admitted she encouraged it, and the other is hiding something, I know that, and the one I talked to first said she wasn't brave enough to threaten him. She reported him to the rest of the firm though. And all three of them were "let go" and offered other jobs through lawyers calling in favors, essentially. So...if I don't get this job, which will be sooo much more money and a legitimate future attached to it, that means I'm still unemployed. Which means now I have time to add to my "special set of skills" and that whole firm is going down. No if ands or buts. I also still haven't heard back from the new place, but I DID send in my proof that I was told I was being let go for other reasons, and that I didn't stop showing up because I abandoned the job, but I stopped showing up because the signed letter I have TOLD me not to. I'm hoping they take that into consideration and discount the firm as a reference with the exception of them confirming the dates I worked there. Seriously. Fml. |

So did you ever hear back from them about the job?
And what is the state's policy on wrongful termination anyway? I mean, just with the evidence you have right now you can go after them for slandering/libeling you to your new potential place of employment. |
