Just ordered an EVGA GeForce 9800GT 1GB for $134.99 from Newegg. Just thought I'd let you all know, not that anybody really gives a rat's ass. I just have to wait for it to arrive, then I'll do the routine "fps in Crysis lol" update.

I'm pretty psyched!

You cock, you have a quad core, plus you can run X360 games at full force on your beast of a tower, and then some, and yet your still not satisfied with your GPU power? Geeze man o.O

I don't really keep up with graphics cards, but I'm going to assume that's quite a deal? Heh.

Was it just a special or is that the normal price?

Whenever I get around to building a computer, I'm definitely going to make sure it's got like a quad core, ~10GB DDR, and some other crazy stuff so it'll last. And it'll just be nice making a big jump from this laptop...

Typically, Video Cards are a major chunk in your computer. You see, with the events you have, it's needed to have a great CPU and Ram. However, in the event of Gamers, like Valhalla and I, Video Cards are everything.

My laptop has the specs to beable to sucessfully play PS2/boarderline PS3 games, but because of the intergrated 128mb intel video card, it's sub par, and has trouble with higher end PS1 emulators. I can't even play DreamCast emulators due to the lack of efficent GPU (graphics processing unit) power.

Good god, my Computer Service Technician class is starting to wear off on me x.x

Yeah, my shit 9500GT is going bye bye. It's not a gaming card, more of a multimedia one. For the same price I got that one, I'm getting one of the better cards out there (that is, until I get a better PSU). It's pretty much the best thing I can put in this computer at the moment.

That's the worst part about my Latitude D820, it's more of a business laptop than anything else. My least favorite thing is that it has a very dark monitor, less color, or something, so porn videos/pictures etc don't look as good as they do on a simple CRT or something. I usually dual monitor and the difference is pretty huge in color.

Anyways, yeah. This thing can actually run Half-Life 2 very well and I managed to play Supreme Commander on it with decent settings, but it's biting the dust now. I tried the Crysis beta out a long time ago and it was hilarious... like I was playing a 3D SNES game or something (zero textures).

So anyways, you seem to know computers... everyone always says it's best to just custom build one off newegg instead of going with a package, is that the route you take? Which companies do you like either way? I've liked this Dell laptop, I've definitely run into a few issues at times but it's always been pretty easy updating drivers/reformatting etc.

I really do want to build a computer or get one sometime this year. I'm not even a huge PC gamer, but I just want something that will never give me slowdown! I tend to hear if you base your PC around running Crysis really well, it's going to be good. Haha.

If you base your computer on playing any recent games at all, you can pretty much do everything with it, save for making it into a server. Mine is a Dell so getting a new motherboard and tower would be a necessity if I wanted to really trick it out (Dell likes mobos so they don't fit into other cases).

My computer can run Half-Life 2 on the max settings pretty easily (the requirements are less than staggering for such a pretty game) and I can slide by with Medium/barely High settings on Crysis but I want to be able to basically max out every game with 30-60 frames minimum.

Newegg is an awesome site with reviews by normal people like you and me so you can find what's good and what's bad, hardware-wise. If you're unsure what you need (say for putting in a new processor), you can always find out there or by Googling it.

My actual "hands on" experience with computer hardware goes only as far as putting in more RAM, a few HDDs and a couple vid cards but my knowledge exceeds my personal schema, if not only for Googling for curiosity.

Yeah, I actually put in new ram on this laptop myself a few months ago. Scariest thing I've ever done in my life by the way, mainly because they only have one of the slots on the bottom, while the other is UNDER THE KEYBOARD! It felt so fragile popping out the keyboard and everything, haha.

Went from 1GB to 3.5GB (technically I put in 4GB, but I ended up seeing issues about the hardware for this laptop not allowing it to use the full 4GB, horrible). Buuut, I didn't really notice a difference after awhile. Probably goes to show how dated this thing is becoming.

It really depends on what you use it for and what operating system you have on it. Unless you're doing some serious multitasking or rendering, I would leave it at 1.5-3GB for XP and 2-3.5GB for Vista.

When it comes to issues like having only 3.5gigs of ram, it's probably due to the fact that's the highest your mobo can support at the time. So I wouldn't really worry about the idea of buying more then that. Currently, if your laptop has dual core or higher, your processor will be as good as it will get unless you just buy a beast of a meachine like what alienware can provide. For you, and like my own issue, I would suggest an Nvidia video card when it comes to games. Only go the ATI route if you want that processing power to keep your computer for slowdown with business programs (aka spreadsheets).

Slowdown with your laptop now, if it's just a general thing, and not involving gaming, is either because your virtual ram may be too high. What happens is, when you have more then enough ram, but your processor can't support the mutlitaskign fo what your overloading it with, it resorts to using Virtual Memory, that's when your harddrive becoems a temporary ram stick at the cost of space (nowhere near as fast, since it's a secondary storage, actual ram is primary, meaning the processor goes straight to ram, but needs to be filtered when it uses the harddrive).

This can cause some serious issues with your computer. Right click My Computer, go to properties, go to the advanced tab, and click on the Change button under performance. Under there is the button for change/customize for yoru Virtual Ram setting. In that window, disable "Let Windows handle the setting" and enter in a manual number of what it recommends (Which is times and a half what your ram is) for both the Minimum and Maximum.

If your Virtual Ram really is the issue as to why your computer is slowing down, then yoru risking what is called Disk Thrashing. When your computer is given a task that is too much to take, and resort to VM, then theres too much data being taken out, stored, and pulled back out. This can cause random computer resets, and ultimatly, could damage your harddrive.

Take a look and try the settings, then post back with a quality update.

This piece of shit sucks. All it's really good for is playing Crysis on maximum settings with 40 frames per second HAHAHAHAHAAAA!!!!

EDIT: Street Fighter IV Benchmark results.

It would barely hit 15 fps on my old card with everything turned down, the new 9800GT had everything maxed (except Anti-Aliasing) and was begging for more. The AA on the demo liked to crash the benchmark/bluescreen! O_o

I've been getting computer parts at incredibly cheap prices of a friend. Got a 500W power supply for a tenner, and the Pentium E6600 (I think, whatever the Core 2 Duo 2.4 GHz one is) processor for a tenner plus an old, old monitor I had since he wanted it for dual screen. All I need now is more RAM, a better graphics card and a new motherboard to support it all and I'm set to go! XD

But dang, 40 FPS with Crysis on max? I WANT THAT

Even though I don't like Crysis. But having STALKER with max settings would be good.

It would destroy STALKER, everything that I've played so far was at least 70 frames per second, sometimes hitting 100 or 200! WoW is the exception because it's mostly CPU driven and it likes to cap out in player-populated areas to sync packet transfer rates between them. I was actually very surprised to see the Devil May Cry 4 demo hit 110fps and average at 78fps on the highest settings!

It probably helps that I only have a native resolution of 1440x900 so there are others out there with the same card with less-than-inspiring results because they like to run on crazy resolutions. When I finally upgrade, I think I'll get an SLI motherboard and just pop in 2 of these brilliant little powerhouses and call it good!

I just obtained an XFX ATI Radeon 4870 512MB card for eighty quid. I would have got the gig one but that was an extra twenty quid I wouldn't have got for a while, so this should do. Just installing drivers for it now, hopefully see some epic results soon.

OH SHIT I love it. Even on my crappy motherboard with only 1.5 gigs of RAM it does STALKER perfectly on max everything. It only lags when new bits of level are being displayed, but once I've looked around a bit, it goes smooth. Guessing that's a lack of RAM, especially since I'm using Vista.

1.5 gig of ram would be suffice when it comes to that type of gaming. In the retrospec, you probably should have gone with the counterpart NVidea Video Card. The ATI side is awesome and great for power business operations (I use to use ATI for gaming, an dit hurt me every step of the way). NVidia cards arn't that great for business, but are fine tuned specificly for gaming.

In otherwords, an Nvidia card at 128mb would probably net you the same results as an ATI at 512MB. (Blows dick, I know, but I've seen it happen)

That was an old PCI one though, an older Nvidia would have been the same as those. ATI is a direct competitor with gaming graphics, with very few differences in between the two companies. Though I personally prefer Nvidia, a casual or hardcore gamer could probably not tell the difference in the quality of graphics, ATI generally have a bit higher specs and Nvidias are made to take more abuse (such as overclocking) and utilize Anti-Aliasing and Anisotropic Filtering more efficiently. Unless you're looking at the pixels in the distance, you probably won't notice any negligible difference.

And yes, I've experimented and 3Gb RAM is optimal for fast loading of texture maps and advanced shaders, which most current games utilize to the maximum. Having a video card with large amount of dedicated memory (mine has 1gb dedicated, ~2gb texture, 3 total) also helps alleviate this. The one I kicked out had 256mb and loaded the textures sluggishly, demanding more from my RAM. The new one took most of the load but still benefits from the extra gig-point-five, improving my framerate by 40 fps in WoW, and that's a big jump, doubling it on average. Of course, turning off the advanced shaders and certain texture mapping jumped it by 200 fps, it just looks prettier when slammed to the max.

Also, if you have a quad-core, do NOT use all 4 core for one intense program, even if you have liquid nitrogen cooling (joke, but you get the point) it will overheat and you'll get the dreaded blue screen. Even 3 cores for one program is a bit much, though decent cooling can make it happen. Just threw that bit in there from getting a 100 fps jump in Crysis, just for my pc to crash 20 seconds later. Other components overheating is fine, just don't hurt the CPU!

I've also heard that if nVidia don't stop catering to the hardcore gaming market, they may go out of business. A friend reckons they're in financial trouble at the moment because they have pretty much stopped doing low end cards. I mean, considering the latest GTX 200 series, the lowest end one of them to my knowledge (The GTX 250, although correct me if I'm wrong) has equivalent power to a 9800 GTX.
