So my university, like many others around California (and the rest of the United States, I'm sure), has been making cuts left and right.

Essential general education and major classes have been canceled. Faculty are going through furloughs. We're actually shutting down for a week in October, so no one will be paid for that time.

Near the end of last month, the state raised university fees 20%. All of us were sent e-mails and texts saying we're "past due" for an extra $400. If we didn't get it to them by yesterday, we were "disenrolled."

And amongst this all, we're still bringing in an Intro to Harry Potter course. New this year: Vampire Lit. They're going to read Twilight and discuss Buffy. No joke.

What are your thoughts?

Classes like those are completely unnecessary and are what is wrong with our education system today. Yet, those are classes that morons enroll in because they are easy and about something they like, so they get kept while real classes get the axe. While at least CSULB doesn't have those kinds of classes, we are still feeling the crunch. Our tuition for fall went up 30% (they voted in an extra 10% for us) and we are also getting classes cut and having furloughs. On top of that, they are pretty much closing the credential programs to new applicants so anyone going for teaching is screwed... maybe even some of the people already in it according to one of my friends.

Honestly, I think this is bullshit and that the students of California should not have to pay for the lawmakers' mistakes. I hope they pass that marijuana bill or something soon so they quit with the cuts. Otherwise, it's getting to the point that it might be cheaper for me to move early and finish my BA in Pennsylvania, seeing as out of state student costs over there are only a bit higher than what I am paying now.

Intro to Harry Potter and Vampire Lit???? holy crap...

My community college raised tuition $6 per unit.. so it's still only $26 a unit. Which I am forever grateful! They cut 50 classes from the college for this fall semester... There is no winter intersession, and there will be no summer school next summer. They cut 150+ classes from the catalog for the spring semester.

Luckily, I'm going for a degree in nursing-- and since there are so many people who want to be a nurse, they can't drop any classes for the program. Thank the gods I chose the right major.. hah.

12 more majors are being added to the "Impacted" list at my school, including stuff like english, history, biology, and a lot of the art majors that were not already impacted. All this because CSU Fullerton is having trouble and we agreed to expand the guaranteed transfer status to three Orange Cost schools. Not right.

Oh... and the faculty no longer have phones in their offices, except for department heads.

Hi, Topos. I know you're new here and all, but consider this a warning for bumping several threads, spamming, and flaming.

EDIT: And if this is Logos. Welcome back.
