This is hands down one of the best free anti-virus programs I've used in a long time, one that actually removes some crucial stuff without forcing you to pay for the full version, unlike a lot of other programs of this sort out there (though it does have some full protection mode that requires payment. The point is though, this DOES remove viruses and crap free of charge).
Mainly, I discovered this when I got some fake Windows XP Spyware protector a few months back. It was obviously a trojan when I first saw it but I couldn't really remove it and stop it from running, constant pop ups told me I had spyware on the computer, it runs a fake scan, etc. I searched around and downloaded a handful of solution/removal programs and a handful of them would scan the computer, most found the trojans and crap ... but then when it came to removing them, they'd ask me for like 30 bucks or something for the full version. I finally found Malwarebytes and got rid of the junk without having to pay anything. Just now I got "AntispywareXP 2009" which is another rogue program that acts like a legit anti-virus remover. Pretty much did the same thing, constantly had popups telling me I had crap, ran a fake scanner, etc... Malwarebytes saved the day again! So simply put, I'm just throwing this out there and recommending this program if you've got some junk on your computer. This goes a little beyond programs like Spybot, Ad-Aware, etc, and seems to get more serious viruses. It's worth a download and a quick scan if you want to try it out: http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php (Last edited by Xeu on 10-30-08 02:54 AM) |

Thanks for the recommendation, I downloaded it and did a full scan on both of my computers. Didn't find anything though.

Small world we live in.
Originally posted by Stitch I was good with this for a few years until they went pro (you have to pay for the full thing now) and the program just literally stopped doing anything for me. It wasn't that great at blocking stuff or whatever, but I guess that's my experience with it. Definitely wasn't bad when it worked. |

I still use the free version. And it downloads, updates, and finds all those nasty little trojans in my torrents.
Just a bit of tweaking, but then, I can reverse engineer if needed. I don't need anything in the full package. There are other freeware options for everything else it does, and the constant backups I do assures that I could care less about what happens to my computer day-by-day. Yeah, I don't know where these damn things come from, but they're pretty much the only issue I've run into ... probably within the last few years or so? Really annoying stuff.
I feel bad for the people these programs trick, because they always look completely un-legit to me. |

I had a bad one a while back that looked completely legit, it even fooled me for a second making me think that somebody else had installed an antivirus on my computer. Good old wikipedia helped me out on that one!

How you guys get these things I'll never know. I've not used Anti Virus for nearing two years and I have had no rogue exe's/antivirus any of that. I use windows firewall, my router firewall and I'm behind a unix box that is running my buddies homebrew shit and I haven't had a single virus in like two years.
I recommend Common Sense 2009 RC3 |
