My dearest respects to the friends and families of these victims.

This is just sick. I'm absolutely tired of seeing these kinds of things happen in our world.

Furthermore, it might be a possible jackass thing to say at the moment here, but if they again fucking tie this to videogames of any sort, I will be even more enraged.

They would need some damn good evidence to link that to video games...

I don't understand how people can do that. Just go somewhere with weapons and shoot a load of people. What reason would that man have had to attack those students with firearms, other than some simple thrill?

What pisses me off most is that it's usually the people who say they were picked on as a kid. Yes, kids can be cruel. And yes, even though as adults, we can look at the things kids do and say they're no big deal, which in reality, what the kids say to you and most of the stuff they do isn't a big deal...but it doesn't mean it feels any better for you as a kid, and because you're so young and without understanding of the fact that life moves on outside of elementary school, the feeling still sucks.

But still...I have no sympathy for people who go on rampages like that. Might be a nasty, close-minded thing to say, but it's how I feel about it until something convinces me otherwise. I was teased. Shit, there were times where I had NOWHERE to go. Abusive household and a different form of abuse at school. And I was too young to have the resources to venture outside those environments. I'm sure there are MANY people who have gone through things like that, even here on Xeogaming, and not all of those people are out there acting out like that, saying they need to kill people in schools because they were picked on. It's just...

Now, I know they said they haven't found a motive...and I may be totally off in my assessment of motive, but as far as this topic in general goes, yes, it was usually those picked on.

As far as blaming this on video games is concerned...I that's a different debate.

It just sucks that this is somewhat of a "norm" now. Sad too. Everything's being disrupted! There was an incident in one of my classes last week. My sociology professor and the english class before our's work closely together, and a lot of the people are in both classes. Apparently, there was a paper written for my sociology class that the english class was letting them use for their assignment, or something like that. Anywho, there was this big uproar because something suspicious was written in the paper. The English class was canceled midway through, and when it came time for sociology, we ended up being canceled too, since both teachers needed to handle the situation.

I mean, that is NOTHING compared to VT, and all of the other incidents. My professor told us that in reality it wasn't THAT big of a deal, it's just something they were obligated as teachers, in light of all of this school violence, to handle with caution and investigate the issue. But that's the thing...my class was canceled, and it's an advanced course, you miss one, you're screwed. So now there's an inconvenience at my school...I'm sure at others as well. Parents have other reasons now to be nervous about sending their babies away...it's just...I mean, it just sucks all over, and my heart breaks for those parents and the students involved in those tragedies. I'd take a minor inconvenience over that any day.

I just saw this in the paper a little bit ago. The person was an ex-student at the school, and I know the police don't have a motive, but it's likely he did this for revenge of some sort more so than being influenced by video games, or a cheap thrill. It seems shootings these days are becoming so trendy that people are easily going along with it as a means of revenge or anger release. It's sort of like a, "if they can do it, it should be easy enough for me to do it" mentality, needing little courage to go through with such a plan. No one yet knows why he did it, and it is bad enough that people were killed, but if those who died were simply random people who didn't even know the guy existed that would be a really horrible thing. It's different when somebody is getting revenge on you, but to be walking down hall, talking to a friend and get shot out of nowhere is beyond murder to me. Still, people like that don't give a damn of the concept that they'll stop a person from living. They're not only taking a life, they're taking away the person's dreams, memories, their happiness, plans for the future. Even something as simple as an ambition to go see a certain movie in a few days. These kids are going to be our leaders in the future. Those things will no longer happen to those students now. And I don't need to mention how it affects the lives of others. How would even we as a community feel if a well-known member here at Xeogaming was a victim of a school shooting?

I can't really say who's job it is to look over the well-being of the emotions of students at school- the counselors or the parents. Problems that arise may not have anything to do what goes on at home. Then again the school may not be a source of rage either. I would also like to say friends should look after one another and provide support in stressful times, but I get the feeling that shooters have very few friends, if any at all. You would almost have to be a loner to kill and take your own life. I don't see how somebody with friends who care could go through with such a thing.

Well, without making a bunch of people very angry anyway.

Well, in all honesty, video games CAN be blamed...but so can MANY other things, ya know? Kids are impressionable, so sure, they might see something from a video game that may distort their vision of reality. They're kids! Anything can distort their perception of reality. Raising a child isn't just black and white though, which is why I get so angry when people blame just one thing.

Like Cyro mentioned about not really knowing who to blame...parents, schools, etc.

Basically, what I mean is video games can be blamed, but if people are going to say it's because they present graphic images and such...well...isn't that called media? I just can't see blaming one thing without looking at other things. Video games present violent images...but so does television, movies, books, etc...therefore, those violent images are in a way, unavoidable, so now this leads to the parents being the ones that are in charge of filtering such things, and explaining that those things aren't real. But without those images, there's nothing for a parent to filter...to me, it's one big cycle, so really, one thing can't be blamed for the other.

Didn't mean to turn this into a video game debate...but...it can link to the topic at hand. **shrugs**

Oh, and btw, I'm not knocking video games. Without them, I wouldn't be receiving a paycheck right now, aside from the fact that I just love them.

The reason I bring up videogames is because with things like this the media are usually quick to throw the blame on videogames, "oh he must've played FPS games", for instance they tried this quickly after the Virginia Tech incident claiming the guy was very confined and a big gamer. More recently Call of Duty has been blamed for causing an ex-Marine to go missing, supposedly triggering past events that have happened to the soldier while he was Iraq.

All I'm saying is that I'm sick and tired of seeing videogames being instantly called upon with things like these. It hasn't happened yet, but I honestly won't be surprised if they do with this case.

Katana and Cyro also made a good point about how normal this is becoming, probably another reason why reading about this incident literally pissed me off. How much longer until another school shooting happens? I can't stand it.

Nevermind that the media only found out the shooters' name this morning, and the slowly-emerging details of his life (serious academic, sociology student with no criminal record) don't jibe with the "traditional" media-crazed gunman stereotype, Thompson has apparently already decided the killer is a gamer and his hobby caused the rampage.

the damage to the reputation of gamers is only a small consideration compared to the immense disrespect done to the victims families when news outlets let Thompson use death as a means of making cheap (and very, very stupid) political points.

What a douche. If that's really his goal he'd be a real moron. I hope this guy isn't dumb enough to make something up about the tragedy and use it for political gain. But since we're on the subject, I think I'd like to make up a fact about ol' Thompson here and say that he hates games because back in the day some gamer nerd stole his girl and got laid when he couldn't get any from her.

That works, too.

A guy named Neubian who commented on a video of the shooting on Break.com made a good comment:

"this stuff keeps on happening, and no one seems to want to talk about the elephant in the middle of the room:
Where does this keep happening???? In the places that federal law prohibits guns!!!! You can't do this in any state at the supermarket, because someone will pull out their own gun and blow your brains out. But at the elite institutions of higher learning, fire away bad guys. We'll use our superior attitudes to defend ourselves -- working great so far . . ."
