For those familiar with Neil Gaiman's work (Sandman, American Gods, Mirror Mask, etc), I'm sure you've already long heard about the upcoming film based on his book, Stardust.

I had heard about this some time ago and was excited to see it come to life. Neil's been posting the occasional update about it as well as the link to these photos. There are more out there that I have seen, but I haven't seen this many in one place. So here are these:

Apparently the TV spots are coming out for it finally:

Here's what Neil had to say about it:

This morning I heard that the new TV spot for Stardust was pretty good. And you know, it is...

Here's a bit on Michelle Pfeiffer, with a great photo of her as an old witch at the start of the film... http://stylescenes.latimes.com/fashion/2007/07/michelle-pfeiff.html
(One thing that fascinates me is that Claire Danes gets to play an Yvaine who is every bit as grumpy as the one in the book, but that the way they cut the trailer and the shot they used here, she seems amiable and compliant. It's the kind of thing that people who study gender semiotics in trailers would probably have things to say about. I just watch it with puzzlement.)

I agree with many of the comments fans have also been leaving about the TV spot in which they say it looks like they make the movie into a Michelle Pffeifer (witch) vs. De Niro (sky pirate) over the Star with an incidental boy adventurer.

But anyway, who's up for seeing this the moment it comes out?

I was really excited when I first saw the trailer, but the book is just SO magical and I don't think this movie will even remotely do it justice. I'll go see it and I'm sure it'll be good, but the book was just amazing.

Count me in for seeing it. Stardust is one of the Gaiman books I haven't read yet, though I want to. However I feel that it would be better if I waited until after the movie. Just in case.

I so want to see this. When I saw the trailer before the Harry Potter movie, I was bouncing in my chair. I am all a go to and see it!

Do you think there will be a mid-night showing? If so we should all go see it.

I've already got plans to see it with my friends. That and the Golden Compass. I can't wait for the other one to come out.

I need to read the book now. THANKS!

OK, this is beyond awesome for a coincidence (it's up there with going to Halloween Haunt during a red harvest moon)--the weekend that Stardust opens, there's going to be a HUGE meteor shower.

NASA's mention of the Great Perseids: http://science.nasa.gov/headlines/y2007/11jul_greatperseids.htm

That is awesome. Pockets will be in Nevada that weekend which now saddens me even more. But hopefully we'll be able to see the shower with all he light pollution.

Wow, that is really cool, now we have to go see it when it opens. Even if we can't see the meteor shower, it will be cool to know that it's going on as we get out of the movie.

OK, don't hate me....

I saw it this weekend...

With Neil Gaiman sitting 3 feet away from me...

And I got to ask him a couple questions...

And got a signed poster from him.

*Runs away as fast as her chubby legs can carry her to escape the extreme smiting she's due for*

In regards to the film, it's really good and beautiful and lovely as a movie, though it has many, many differences from the book (which are not bad, but I'm just pointing them out if you have read the book). Namely the ending is COMPLETELY different (No, I will not spoil it).

Captain Shakespeare's part has so much just added to it, but it's all welcome additions. There's no hairy man and Tristran's name (through a clerical error on one of the writer's parts as Neil pointed out) became Tristan.

Neil mentioned that comparing the movie and the book would be like comparing Earth I to Earth II. I adore it.

... I too shall join in this hunt. But yeah, I am looking forward to the movie as well. I think my decision to not read the book first is turning out to be a good one.

It was a Comic-Con exclusive that Gina and I went to. You had to get this special paper, call the number to reserve and be there like 3 or 4 hours early.

Anyway, reading the book beforehand is useful, but not necessary. I could make out a list of the differences, but not only would it ruin the movie for you, it would just be nitpicking a movie that's pretty good on its own.

EDIT: Oh, I should also add that this happened at Comic-Con, but I was at the Spike and Mike gauntlet so I missed it (I don't do the awards shows anyway):

I won't get any popularity points for this, but I think Neil Gaiman is way over-rated. Sandman? Snooze...
I can't judge the movie without having seen it yet, I imagine it would be different from his usual stuff.
