I just got back from seeing the midnight showing of this in the IMAX. It's fucking beautiful. I'll go more into detail after a bit of sleep, but I must say there's really something here for everyone. Yes, it's violent and yes, there's gratuitous chest shots (from both man and woman), but that's not the point. It really captures the Spartan ethics for a modern audience who know virtually nothing about Greece. Before leaving for the theater, I happened to catch Last Stand of the 300 on the History Channel at kittybob's house. It really goes in depth and was an excellent background guide to go along with the movie. It even details the unsung Spartan and Athenian heroes as well as the history of the Persians, not to mention a VERY detailed look at the weapons, armor, and fighting styles of both sides. |

The downfall is that its 120% studio, from what I've heard. Hardly anything is "real". But oh well, its supposed to be stylized and everything.
I'll be seeing it tonight at an IMAX. It shall be glorious. |

I'm not one for an overload of testosterone, but this movie had me captured. The little boy in me loved watching these men tear each other apart.
Given I just watched Dead Alive, which is said to be the goriest movie ever....so I may have had a violence buzz going from that too. The dialogue was a little spotchy at times, but I still give it thumbs up. |

Well Sin City was ALL studio, but you don't see me complaining. Matter of fact, that seems to be the best way to get a Frank Miller comic done in movie-form.
Really, while it doesn't do much for the gray matter, it's entertaining and very enjoyable. And if you've ever read the comic, or at least seen it, you'll see that Zack Snyder was brilliant in capturing the visuals exactly. There are much better side-by-side comparisons I'm sure, but that's all I could find online right now of the exact same scenes. Frank Miller doesn't let just anyone direct movies based on his work. I have SO MUCH faith in Zack Snyder now. He'll be directing the Watchmen movie, which is one of my absolute favorite comics and I worried that Hollywood would ruin it. |

Originally posted by Mr. Club Really, the chest shots just make it more like the classic art that's used to depict Greek life. The above painting was done in the 1800s and depicts the Spartans featured in the movie, King Leonidas in the center. There was an article in last Sunday's L.A. Times about Zack Snyder at the Louvre, where this painting is, on a tour of the museum and when they got to this painting, he said, "Awesome. I just made a movie of this." The tour guide turned to him saying, "Really? What does it look like?" And Snyder said, "It basically looks like this." Then the tour guide remarked, "Well those men are all naked," to which Snyder replied, "Yeah, that's kind of what the Spartans were all about." Really, it's a very entertaining film. There are times when you just want to be entertained and 300 does the job. Here's a 300-second preview of 300 (I didn't make the pun up. That's how it was billed when it was sent out): (Last edited by Rogue on 03-09-07 10:19 PM) |

Originally posted by Rogue Yes, did had they not invented the shirt yet? And there aren't that many women, only like 2. But this movie was awesome. It was made of win. Much much better than Sin City. But I have to disagree with some of the things I've heard saying that it is 'revolutionary'. It definitely owns, very very hard, but there is absolutely nothing revolutionary about it in any way. Also: Spoiler:
I didn't like how they showed Leonidus' corpse at the end. It mortalizes him. We know he's dead, it kills the moment to show it. I much prefer the way they did it in Hero where they show the wall, covered with arrows, and one Jet Li shaped part with none. But that's probably my biggest complaint. Awesome movie. |

Good point FX.
Anyways, I don't have much to say (need to get going to bed) ... all I will say, is ... HOLY SHIT. This movie was absolutely mindblowing. |

One of the few things that disappointed me was the sex scene. It seemed maybe toooo passionate. Especially with the music. He's a king! He's a SPARTAN! I wanted tribal drums while they went at it like animals. The snapshot directing was neat, but it wasn't as primal as I imagined it.
The sex scene in Alexander....that fulfills.=) |

I just got back from watching the movie.
Please dont hurt me, but it was an alright movie...I do give its thumbs up of the heart of the story...but it was too Godamn repetitive. Why was it repetitive? The speeches, the fighting, and the mindblowing action...For me it got old after awhile...But yet I still bow down and shall reveil this movie "Epic." Why epic? Because I loved that movie. I love the mythologies action and mindblowing art in this movie just as I did Sin City. But it got old for the fighting... |

Yes, the sex scene was strange. Also, way too long. They didn't need to show every single position in the world. A few seconds is enough. It seems like every movie does a sex scene that we don't need to see.
EDIT: What do you think of the 300 layout? (Last edited by FX on 03-10-07 06:28 AM) |

It seems repetitive in the fighting because it's actually based on the historical battle of Thermopylae where a small group of Spartans actually held off the Persians enough for the villages to flee and the armies to build up enough force and influence to take out the Persians entirely.
The battle lasted three days and had the same occurrences as in the movie, minus the mythical creatures to fight. Actually, after watching the History Channel special, I have an even greater respect for everyone involved in this movie. The fighting styles were on the ball, and yes, there was a Persian force called the Immortals. Named so because the wore black masks and didn't speak, so when one fell another would immediately take his place and it would seem like you were continuously fighting the same person over and over again. Every movie does have its flaws, though, but I abso-fuckin'-lutely adore this film. EDIT: Love the layout, FX. It's my favorite poster. EDIT 2: Oh, and don't forget the ladies and transsexuals at Xerxes' sex party. I don't remember how many are actually topless, but many are damn near close or just wearing gold pasties. Apparently, when it comes to status, the number of facial piercings you have says it all. (Last edited by Rogue on 03-10-07 10:02 AM) |

Originally posted by Mr. Club Ironically the fighting is what kept me attached. It was the occasional over the top dialogue that turned me off every now and then..... But then Xerxes would appear and I was turned right back on again. Golddust 2.0. |

I just love the poster because it's just a screenshot from the movie.
And I want to see the movie from the 1960's The 300 Spartans. |

The layout is ugh.
Anyways, the action is what made the movie for me pretty much. That, and I myself have a thing for mythology, Roman/Greek stuff, its just so interesting to me. Though, overall I don't think I'd say this movie beats out Gladiator, maybe in the epic level and with the action, but not with anything else. Gladiator had probably one of the most hateful villians I've ever seen in any film, and is nearly unmatched. That and it was just 50x more emotional. Either way, both are probably my two top favorite mytholigical movies, ever. The sex scene probably wasn't needed, but when it got to maybe the 4th/5th/6th or so position, I couldn't help but giggle. Then again, that's me. Wish I could throw out a good word here but I can't think of it ... Rogue would know, and no, not perversion or anything. Another thing I wasn't too fond of was the monsters, kind of ruins the realism, but oh well. It hardly hurt the movie for me, and I actually wanted to see the giant executioner monster fight the Spartans. The soundtrack to this movie was just amazing. Completely top notch. My favorite action scenes were probably the few when they focused on one Spartan, the music probably went silent, it went into slow-mo, and the camera followed the single Spartan killing off 10-20 people or so and being completely untouchable. It was just godly and totally amazing action there. Also, forget the Matrix? |

Acording to my history teacher who saw it and was talking about it durring class this morning it is a movie full of "senseless historical violence." In other words: Fantastic! I am really looking foward to seeing it. | |||

Originally posted by NUCKLEARKNIGHT Does your history teacher not teach real history? Damn, college history can be intense. Loads and loads of violence, sex, cannibalism, intrigue, what have you. But seriously, Nucklear, I highly recommend you see it. It's not near as gory violent as say Kill Bill Volume 1 or The Passion of the Christ (you wanna talk excessive?). |

The movie for the most part did follow historical text. All except for the ending. It was actually the Greek Navy that defeated the Persians, but of course it suited the movie to replce that notion with a foot army.
If you remember when Queen Gorgo mentions the battle of marathon, we get the term marathon from a man who upon hearing of the first victory over the Persians (the tall creepy guy's dad in the movie, the King before him) he ran all the way to Athens to announce the victory his name was Marathon. Just a little interesting tid-bit. |

Well my history teacher said that the Spartans entered the war because they realized that once the Persians were done with Athans they would just turn to them next. Also he said that in the pass to Thermopali had a series of gates that the Spartans would defend and fall back into. However I would not be surprised if he is incorrect on this since it has always seemed to me that he has just taken a course on how to sound smart. |
