Currently reading two translations of Snorri's "Prose Edda," one from 1916 and the other from 1954, for comparison. Almost done with the 1954 one, though I'm going to go over the "Poesy of Skalds" section in the 1916 edition since it's longer than the condensed '54 one, with more quoted songs and such to read through.
I'm sitting here with the two books, one on top of the other, and a mythological encyclopedia on stand-by when I need to look up some of the more obscure aesir, vanir, and other such characters. Brandon says I look like I'm doing this for a class with how overly intense I'm apparently getting trying to figure out why the translations differ so much. I might as well learn old Icelandic at this point. I'm getting a copy of "Volsunga Saga" with selected passages from the "Poetic Edda" coming in the mail this weekend, so woo. Once I'm done with the Scandinavian (haha, will I EVER be?!), I'm finally going to buckle down and read Chaucer. Or Plato. Haven't quite decided yet. |

I LOVE LOVE LOVE this show. Been watching since they put the first episodes out online to see if they could generate interest before they started airing on Nick.
There are so many people who want to deny it's in the same canon with "Last Airbender," and those people need to suck it up and accept that Korra's an awesome chapter in this expansive world. I also really dug the Equalists, as her first antagonist. I mean, people with bending abilities have an obvious advantage over those who don't, and it's not surprising to see benders turn to crime with other baddies out there like the Triple Threat Triad. The Equalists had a point. Spoiler:
Shame their leader was a fraud, but damn was Amon a great villain! I love looking up Equalist propaganda fanart. And YES, Korra is not really for kids. It is, but it really, REALLY isn't. |

It's just that I've been meaning to read "Symposium" FOREVER now. I know the story and all, but I really want to read it all the way through for myself. Similar situation with "Canterbury Tales."
Picked up Stephen Hawking's "A Brief History of Time" with foreword by Carl Sagan. I've got the audiobook for listening to while I go walking. Also, here's hoping my book club book -- "All The Light We Cannot See" by Anthony Doerr -- for next week shows up over the week. We're meeting Tuesday, and I was #168 on the waiting list a couple months ago. Checking my account, it's FINALLY "in transit" to me, but then that could take a whole week. Finished the '54 edition of the "Prose Edda" and am working back through the 1916 one, as mentioned before. It's like reading an AP style book. Someone's asking, "And how would one paraphrase Skadi?" and then listing off every nickname she's given or can POSSIBLY be given when referenced in Skaldic poetry. The thing with the skalds is you have to know all their references just to read basic sentences. They wouldn't simply say "Loki looked at a tree" they'd sing something like "The wolf's sire used his organs of which the all-father has only one, and Sif's hair thief saw an ash as tall as the one that shook during the Twilight of the Weird." Granted it'd be much sleeker, but yeah, you pretty much have to dissect everything. (Last edited by Rogue on 10-03-14 09:33 AM) |

Sausage gravy. Particularly a spicy-ish, hearty one on chicken fried steak and mashed potatoes or home fries or on an SOS served on a military mess tray. Or in the case of this one restaurant we love in Portland -- on a fried chicken breast with thick-cut bacon and cheese on a fresh-baked biscuit. Pine State Biscuits. They're a godsend.
I didn't quite feel home last week 'til we got our sausage and biscuits smothered in gravy from our usual place. Your biggest pet peeve about any one of your friends? (Mine is this one friend who FB invites Bran and me to things just to get a ride and then says things like, "Well, since you're going, give me a ride," or bugs us for one all the time and then 1) gets really controlling about us leaving when she wants us to, 2) keeps us waiting for an absurd amount of time for her, 3) insists on loading our car down with a ton of bullshit, 4) gets to the event and is a social butterfly, but doesn't make an effort to include us, and finally 5) says she doesn't need us any more because she got a ride home.) Originally posted by Elara Probably never. ![]() I sent an e-mail with a few suggestions to the hostess and never heard back. Not even a kiss-off "Thanks for the list." Whenever I write saying I'm going to be late or not make it at all (as with the time Bran was in the hospital), she writes back almost instantly. Anyway, there'll be an awkward, "So have you ladies thought about which book we'll do next?" and then no one really says anything. Mostly because I always forget to look into any before the meeting. Once someone said, "We should read the 'Game of Thrones' books," but that was shined on, like it was a joke, by the others. |

Fact: I did the "Look at your man. Now back to me. Now back at your man. Now back to ME" thing standing next to Brandon and looking back and forth at Isaiah Mustafa, who was sitting a few feet from us during a shoot. | |||

I haven't had a paying job that's made me work that in a long time (since 2002).
But I'm looking for something that'll pay me at all. Fact: I totally forgot it was October until last night. |

Sitting in the library with these idiots sitting across from me, talking a lot of smack. The guy keeps going on about how he's going to push this old man down the stairs because he thinks the man is glaring at him. The woman is talking about how he smacks little kids that don't get out of her way.
And now she's ranting about how she hates Puerto Rican women and how Fidel Castro is her biological grandfather. Sorry.... just irritated and trying to read my book in silence. |

Finished both translations of the "Prose Edda," as well a couple other Icelandic sagas.
Currently in the middle of "All The Light We Cannot See," the book club's pick for October. Story of a blind French girl in hiding during WWII and a genius-level German boy fighting for the Nazis as a radio expert of sorts. I imagine their paths will cross eventually. 200 pages in and I'm off and on rolling my eyes. ![]() Also reading "Brief History of Time" by Stephen Hawking, as mentioned in a previous post. Just picked up a few graphic novels and have added more titles to my constantly growing "To Read" list. Who has time for drugs? (Last edited by Rogue on 10-13-14 07:48 PM) |

I did not.
Though I did write down some choice things I overheard while sitting in the Bellflower library yesterday. *Clears throats* Said by the "Cuban woman" who says she's Castro's granddaughter because "grandma used to fuck him back in the day" : "Mama's not very smart. She's like, 'Oh fuck no, I'm not gettin' with no Scorpio!' And then she got with this new guy, and you know what? He's a Scorpio. She's a fuckin' Aires, nigga. Told you Mama's not too smart." Man to his daughter by the children's books (Overheard whilst taking a break, getting a drink of water, and looking at the books for sale near that section): "What you apologizin' for? You hit her? You didn't needa apologize for that. Bitch should be sayin' sorry to you." Last one. Woman who was playing loud videos on her phone sitting at the study table next to mine, who then answers a call and has a similarly loud conversation: "Yeah, dude. They eat fuckin' monkey brains, dude! They like take the monkey and put it on this table and then they hit it with hammers and then eats its brains. Sick, right? And then they feed that to their children. Right, dude? Can't they feed they kids something else?" I feel these need a dramatic reading by Malcolm McDowell or something. |

Good to see you, VG!
I've never really watched K-dramas, but they seem to be getting more and more popular; they have video rooms for them at anime cons here. And yeah, I'm pretty much always here. ![]() |
