Finished Perfume: The Story of a Murderer, Hit-Girl: Prelude to Kick-Ass 2 and Kick-Ass 2 yesterday.
Since I'll probably go more into Kick-Ass in the movie thread, I'll go over Perfume a bit. It was one of those books my sophomore honors English teacher was insisting I read, and frankly, with many of the things that happen in it, I'm surprised she was pushing this off on a 15-year-old. A good read, to be sure, originally written in German, about a man was an extraordinarily strong sense of smell -- to the point that he becomes entranced with girls who smell of innocence and wants to capture it for himself in a perfume. It's not exactly the sort of book I would recommend to just anyone because it's a little on the abstract side when it comes to his olfactory obsessions, as though he's smelling people's souls. I've got a few books out of the library now, but not sure which one to start. I took Drink: A Social History of America with me yesterday, but the first few pages were just so irritating to read as an American. The book is written by a British man, Andrew Barr, who's spent the intro just going, "This isn't an issue it Britain, but it is in America and therefore America is inferior." The first page is mostly taken up by a footnote of him ranting about Americans calling indigenous people "Native Americans." He asserts that they should be called "Amerindians," and therefore calls them that for the rest of the book because (and this is an actual quote) "Amerindians generally do not object to being called Indians." Now, one of my majors was American studies, and I do get that it's actually easier to study America from afar rather than being an American studying America in America. Americans seriously go to places like South Africa to study America. However, Barr's judgemental writing on Americans, as a subject of Queen Elizabeth II's, is like being a Muslim Irani citizen and hearing an American give a lecture on how backward they believe Persians are. I may agree with him, for the most part (because, hell, I'd been thinking America's view of liquor was backwards this whole time), it's just, for a non-fiction book with a lot of opinion interjected, it's actually obnoxious just trying to read it for the information. I'll power through it, but I'm telling you, it'd be easier to watch the guy from Dirty Jobs do his show for the History Channel, How Booze Built America. (Last edited by Rogue on 06-12-13 12:29 PM) |

Managed to get Kick-Ass 2, as well as the book that goes between it and the original (Hit-Girl: Prelude), out of the library.
I hope what they do with Jim Carrey's character what they did with Nicholas Cage's Big Daddy and expand on him. Colonel Stars was awesome. I guess they would be if they're taking the two characters of Colonel Stars and Lieutenant Stripes and making them one person, Colonel Stars and Stripes. Seriously, jazzed to read the third installment, but looks like there's probably another section to go between 2 and 3. The thing I hate about Mark Millar's writing, though, is how much he relies on throwing out random pop culture references like the kids checking their Facebook accounts or what they're watching. I'm sure he backs this shit by saying it's a slice of life and people name off products they use and shows they watch all the time, but it's like he thinks his readers will see this and think, "Haha, I get all these references! Booooy, I am soooo smart, and this is tailored for people like me who know all about this stuff." It's like Family Guy with their one-percenter jokes. |

Watching Titanic for the first time since it came out in theaters in '97.
Even though I like (even downright love) Leo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet for other roles they've played, the acting in this is still just so mediocre and cheesy. Now I remember why 12-year-old me was laughing her ass off in the theater when Jack died while the girls next to me were crying and hitting me in the arm. |

Well, I'd by lying if I said I didn't see it coming.
Spoiler:
I knew Robb was going to die, the middle of last season. Gina had scored Robb on a quiz, "Which of the Kings are you?" or something regarding the Clash of Kings characters and then posted on Facebook something like, "Well I guess this means I won't be around much longer." I just didn't know how it was going to happen, but I somehow KNEW it would be at the hands of whom it was. Spoiler:
I've also been seeing pictures of Catelyn with a white face and vertical stripes either drawn on or imprinted on her cheeks (Link). I'm trying to not read too much into it yet, but I assumed she would either die or enter an insane stage of mourning. Anyway... I'm not as broken up about it as others. In fact, I'm more relieved. This set of spoilers is behind me now, and I can move on and be more surprised about other things. But since it's just you and me reading this, Elara, I'll go ahead and list off the spoilers I know to a certain extent. Spoiler:
- Ygritte dies. I saw fanart. I also knew that Jon Snow was supposed to get face scars since I'd seen some fanart with him like that before. - Joffrey dies (by poisoning, I think). One of the pages I'd liked on Facebook outright posted an image from a set of cards made to look like "The Gashlycrumb Tinies," and the caption read something like, "Joffrey, poisoned I expect." This seemed alluded to when you see Joffrey pick up his wine to drink RIGHT AFTER Stannis does the bit with the leaches on Gendry. - Loras dies. I don't know how or when, but Marty just randomly said it while I was talking to Becky. Since I really don't care about Loras, this one doesn't matter. Since Brandon told them about the show's storyline of Tywin saying that Cersei was to marry Loras, and Marty and Becky said that never happened in the books, I assume he'll get killed off before that wedding. - Arya is on another continent. I also don't know how or why, but Marty just randomly said that too. - It was Lysa Arryn who had John Arryn killed. This was one I knew about to some extent right after watching season 1. Baelish was involved if I remember right. - Tommen dies. I don't know how, why, when, or whatever. That's all I can remember at the moment. (Last edited by Rogue on 06-03-13 11:42 AM) |

Fuck you, Dad, for dropping a sharp light panel on my back (which made me cry) and then dumping broken fluorescent light bulb glass in the meat I was preparing for Brandon's and my lunch.
And most of all FUCK YOU FOR NOT APOLOGIZING FOR ANY OF IT. |

Originally posted by Elara Here's the story. Bran and I were in the kitchen, with all the meat and herbs going in the mixer on the counter. I went to the sink to wash my hands, and in the meantime my dad came into the kitchen to replace the plastic panel on the ceiling in front of the fluorescent lights. He was standing on a step-ladder and wouldn't let me get out, leaving me trapped in this corner by the sink. He drops the panel and it falls on me with a corner gouging into my back. I immediately start crying because it HURTS LIKE A BITCH. He doesn't apologize or even ask if I'm OK. So I get the hell out of there, and stand by the dining room table. He goes right back to trying to put that panel back in, and it falls again hitting these two fluorescent bulbs that HE left leaning in the corner in the kitchen. One falls and EXPLODES. Glass and carcinogenic powder go EVERYWHERE, and especially right into the mixer's bowl with the meat in it. Again, he doesn't apologize and we end up throwing the entire mixture away that Bran had just paid for at Trader Joe's. He half-assed sweeps the glass up, leaving many bits all over the floor. It's Brandon who picks up the glass off the counter and I start trying to wash all the dishes that were on the counter after Bran tells me my dad drank from a glass that was just by the sink. Powder and glass had gotten EVERYWHERE, as I said. Anyway, I'm so pissed off and Brandon and I end up going out to get lunch so I can cool down. When Mom got home, I told her about it and she mentioned that she had asked Dad what was up with the powder on the floor or something and said that Dad told her it was a mess that Bran and I made from baking. WHAT THE FUCK?! I mentioned the broken bulb to her and she freaked out and started cleaning as much as she could of the kitchen since she worries (rightfully so) about cancer in this house. So yeah... |

Yeah, it was lame. For the most part anyway. I mean, the Arya and Davos/Gendry scenes were awesome, but did they really have to just end with Daenerys and the freed Yunkai slaves. I feel like they did that just because she keeps getting the pinnacle scenes (the dragon birth, getting them to burn the man from the Undying and then sacking that guy's house for her ship/army fund) of the season finales and they want to keep that pattern going.
That final scene ACCOMPLISHED NOTHING. You already know that she's sacked Yunkai in the previous episode... Spoiler:
They could have used those wasted minutes to kill off Joffrey or some other character or introduce Lady Stoneheart. That is, unless more was supposed to happen before those plot points happen. Still, that bit at the beginning... Spoiler:
Putting Grey Wind's head on Robb's body was the worst thing I've ever seen on the show. Granted they were both already dead and wouldn't have felt a thing, it was still fucking awful. Worse than the Red Wedding for me. I hate that Ramsay Snow's identity was supposed to be the big reveal for the episode, and hell, even for the season since they put it in the finale. They were advertising the hell out of who they cast as Bolton's bastard. Seriously, they "wanted the viewer to be in it with Theon and not have any idea what was going on"? THEN DON'T FUCKING TELL US WHO THE KID FROM "MISFITS" IS SUPPOSED TO BE WHEN YOU CAST HIM. Hell, don't even tell us you cast him. Let it be a surprise like you want! And now we have to wait another 9 months for the next season to catch the rest of the book. |

I'm heading to Ridgecrest to see Brandon's family this weekend. Gotta have an early Father's Day at home, since I'll be missing it on Sunday with my dad. Things have cooled down between us, and I bought him a few DVDs today.
Looking forward to a peanut butter bacon cheese burger and a trip to the airplane graveyard on the way out to the high desert. |

In honor of Gendry's freedom, I made a pot of stew from the Ziplock bags of meat in our freezer that we just have from my parents stocking it up. Not sure if it's beef or pork or whatever, but we had a few good bowls of brown from it. | |||

It's a bit early, but I'll be out of town. I'm not sure if there are any dads who are active on our board, but oh well. Wish one to your hubby for us, True.
I celebrated early by getting my dad a few DVDs (Argo, Moneyball, and The Natural) and a card about a bear shitting in the woods, baking a Frito pie for lunch, and then my parents and I (Bran was at work) got dinner at Tilted Kilt. Good day. (Last edited by Rogue on 06-13-13 11:55 PM) |

I completely know where you're coming from, and while I object to many anchronistic films/books regarding various time periods (I just went through this with Immortals yesterday), Snyder's films are one of my addictions (even though he only wrote and produced this one since he was busy directing Man of Steel).
Oh my god, watching the midnight release of the first 300 in IMAX was like a religious experience. |

Originally posted by Elara It was his brother, Joey's, birthday. But I'll hug him for you anyway. ![]() We went to Ridgecrest for Joe's b-day and they only realized it was Father's Day after I mentioned I was going to miss spending it with my dad since we were going on the trip. Way too much driving. We got up there Friday night and then Bran and I were delegated having to drive down to Lancaster and back to pick up Brandon's dad's stepdad from the Antelope Valley Hospital. Then we drove to Whitney Portals and back to Ridgecrest. The drive to Kernville on Sunday was a couple hours one way on its own on top of driving home after that. |

I had to room with this girl (who is the adopted daughter of Brandon's dad's stepdad, in whose home we were staying in Ridgecrest) who had a mullet that was comprised of a bowl cut and a rat tail. That's the trifecta of bad haircuts.
I'd be worried if she somehow made it down to Echo Park or Silverlake. The hipsters would see that and be green with envy for achieving the ultimate ironic haircut and make this thing popular throughout L.A. and eventually spreading to Portland, Seattle, and then the WOOOOOOOOORLD. |

Fuck people who go to the track at the park just to smoke next to it. Every time we walk by the cars side, we're inhaling all this carbon monoxide and it's disgustingly rude.
Fuck that Brandon's family (on his mother's side) is asking us to come to Thanksgiving, but then putting out there that we'll have to stay in a hotel. If you're asking us to drive out there, at least offer us the floor. I don't know, I come from a family where whenever anyone asks you to come visit they make space for you. Saying, "You're going to have to stay in a hotel," is just fucking cold. Well, if we decide not to go out to Arizona there's still all the room parties we could hit up at LosCon that weekend. |

Figures that when I send away for volumes of a set of graphic novels they send the last one first and the next I need to read takes weeks to arrive at my library branch. This is going to take forever. |
