| Got the corrections in the mail a week ago and finished them up. Still waiting to hear what else the client wants on this.
Otherwise work has been editing Stitch's manuscript, shooting Voidcrush shows, and gearing up to write this freelance story and Voidcrush's media kit. And I cleaned my mother-f-ing room. I can see the floor! Stitch and I are flying up to San Francisco tomorrow for their Gay Pride festival and coming back Monday. |

| So, I'm sure most of you have heard that Ryan Dunn, famous for the "stunts" he performed on the Jackass TV and in the movies, died in a recent car accident.
He was driving his Porsche at a speed of 130 miles an hour with a blood alcohol level twice the legal limit. His car crashed and caught on fire, killing him and his passenger. While I do wish his family and friends well, the resulting arguments between critics of Dunn's death and his fans have been somewhat surprising. It seems like anyone who chastises him for endangering the lives of others on the road is getting flamed. Example: Roger Ebert rather bluntly Tweeted: "Friends don't let jackasses drink and drive," before it was confirmed that he was the driver. Bam then Tweets: 
Honestly, it does seem disrespectful to mock the dead, but I can't help but agree with Ebert's sentiment. Thoughts? |

| I'm conflicted. I love Leland Yee. He's backed so many student journalists and championed our First Amendment rights, and honestly I don't think minors should be allowed to buy certain kinds of games without parents. I don't see that as harming First Amendment rights of the game makers.
At the same time, were the law to be upheld it could chip away at the rights of artists, and the law Yee wrote was pretty much distorted when it was put into effect. And being a comic book fan (and comic books have undergone their own ridiculous degree of Senate hearings regarding their content), it would appear I should stand in solidarity with the video gamers. Yep, conflicted. Fine. Parents... the ball is completely in your court now. If you complain about your kid playing some game about skull-fucking some old lady they shot in the face with a steam-powered lasergun before taking a radioactive shit in the eye socket, that's YOUR problem. |

| God.. fuck this whole newsletter business I got myself into. The client keeps wanting inane changes and then realizes he wants them changed back. What the fuck does "Use the tighter font" mean?! After spending 45 minutes on the phone with him last night, I'm realizing he doesn't even know what italicized font is. Goddamn.
And further on this, fuck me for not confirming payment on this whole matter because now I've apparently done this for a job reference. 
Yep, fuck you, self. You should never assume that when they offer someone $600 the offer shifts to you when you take on the job. FUCK. |

| CONGRATULATIONS! That's great news, Elara!
Well, I'm back from San Francisco. Went to gay pride with Stitch. It was so crowded, and you couldn't walk 10 feet without smelling weed. It was definitely better on Sunday, after the parade. Saturday was like a hipster rock festival in Portland or something -- too many straight teenagers hanging out smoking weed because there was a massive gathering multiple blocks-wide and they felt they could get away with it there. Sunday was full of pantsless men, dykes on bikes, men kissing (one couple fingering each other in the street wearing nothing but bondage gear and ass-less chaps), and the very rare, but occasional naked boob. Anyway, turned over the final draft of the newsletter. No pay. Fine. I'm more interested in getting it out of my hair at this point. | Elara, believe me when I say I completely agree with you.
Being in the field has shown me a few things about modern journalism, namely that they do things the general public likes -- like reading off what people on Twitter said. It's like those Man on the Street boxes in newspapers where they ask random people a question and then take people's pictures and place a quote of their answer with the photo. I guess they like having the public's say included? But yes, the fact that they turn to Twitter, Facebook, MySpace, FriendPile, FuckFace, etc, for their news gathering is really weak. Even worse -- when they get their information from Wikipedia. It's been proven that some journalists are THAT stupid and have taken bad information from it and dropped it into stories. |

I spent 45 minutes on the phone with him last night discussing FONTS that he swears I keep fucking up, and when I got them the way he specified, he writes me this condescending e-mail that starts off, "I don't understand. It's like you forgot everything we discussed last night."

He wanted these screen caps from this episode of Lost where these two characters were killed off, but I was never sent the images he wanted and he was on vacation and not answering calls or e-mail. I FOUND high resolution pics exactly like the ones he described, and dropped them in. He can't tell the difference until I tell him that they aren't the ones he provided. He e-mails me the pictures. They are pictures he TOOK OF HIS TELEVISION SET AT AN ANGLE SO THE FACES ARE FRIKKEN SQUISHED and demands that I change the ones I had out for these shitty pictures. Another photo issue. He wants a mugshot of M. Night Shyamalan for this big piece in the newsletter about their boycott of The Last Airbender. The picture he provided was too small and would have come out pixilated when enlarged. He throws a fit about the higher resolution one I drop in, and demands the one he provided. I use one of the two pictures he sent me and he answers, "No, not THAT one. We used that one in the last newsletter." So I spend a friggin' hour on Google looking for large images of Shyamalan looking stupid, because that's what he wants, and oddly enough there aren't THAT many. I get three, he FINALLY chooses one and now that issue is put to rest. But the issue that's making me want to introduce Mr. Kitchen Knife to Ms. Jugular Vein is the FUCKING headline FONTS. Once again I'm getting inundated with e-mails that the fonts for headlines in the inside pages "don't look right" and to "use the tighter font." WHAT THE FUCK DOES THAT MEAN?! He circled a font in there, Book Antiqua bold italic 12pt flush left, and says he wants the headlines to be that. They were all already Book Antiqua bold 12pt flush left, and so I changed them to be as he specified. His latest batch of corrections site certain pages as having the wrong font. I'm confused, and end up calling him, having a 45 minute conversation just about fonts, and I realize he doesn't seem to know what the fuck ITALICIZED means. So we go over the drafts together, he tells me what he wants and I make note of it. All headlines Book Antiqua bold. New headlines are flush left, subheadlines are flush right, headlines below those are Book Antiqua bold italic 12pt flush left. All right. Got it! I send him the PDF with the changes and suddenly I'm getting the, "Did you not REMEMBER WHAT WE DISCUSSED AT ALL LAST NIGHT?!?!?!?" e-mails implying I'm an idiot. Instead of breaking down at this point, I create a new PDF of the sample fonts and tell him to PICK THE ONE HE LIKES. His last e-mail goes, "I realized what I didn't like after we hung up. I don't know what to tell you, maybe the font just looks different when it's smaller." MOTHERINGFUCKINGSHITABRICKCOCKSUCKERTITS. My last interaction was writing out all of the headlines on the pages in question and next to them writing what font they are, point value, whether they're flush left or right and why they are bold italic when he apparently HATES that font. This shit better be done by tonight or there will be hell to pay. EDIT: BTW, the fonts in my original first draft were what he implied liking over the phone, though he instructed me to change them to bold italic twice before that. The whole issue of payment was that he offered this guy $600 to do it, which he mentioned in a meeting. This gave me the idea to ask for the job since I needed the money for the trip in October, was going to have been a recent graduate with nothing else to do when I would be working on it, and they really needed help since this newsletter was supposed to be out in December, but that first guy who was offered the money was fucking them over. During the 45 minute conversation, the guy tells me they can't pay me as the newsletter is always volunteer work and they don't pay people to do it. When I had previously e-mailed the president asking about pay, he wrote back that the guy doesn't pay members (I am not a member... yet. But now I never will be) and that it's expected that members work for free. So it's my fault for assuming the $600 offer would shift to me, but goddamn it the pages that guy who was offered the money were SHIT. I had to redesign 36 original pages. It's like this client is saying my time isn't worth anything. I actually had gotten a freelance writing job and haven't had time to start on the stories I promised them yet. I wrote an apology letter to my new editor and she hasn't gotten back to me. I really hope this didn't fuck that up because a friend from the Viking vouched for me. | Yeah, I would just tell him to fuck off, but as mentioned I'm now doing this with the hope of a job reference or whatever at this point.
All the same, I've never felt so abused by a client/editor/etc. When I first started working on this the first weekend of June, I was seriously having nightmares about page design and would stand in the shower thinking about photo placement. I'm not joking. At the very least I've been thanking my lucky stars that I haven't lived through a holocaust or killing fields situation or anything of the like, because I always feel like such a pussy complaining about work when there are people who REALLY know what stress is like. |
