Well, school's back in session. I've got 15 units (5 classes), 24 textbooks, and NO SCHOOL TODAY! Ahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!!
I've mentioned it in a few threads, but I'm working on interviewing two of the three creators of steampunk (I was able to contact another one!) and they all went to my university. The prime one I'll be interviewing will be authored "On Stranger Tides" which was optioned for the new "Pirates of the Caribbean" movie. I'm freelancing a bit for the paper this semester. Thankfully, I've got several affairs worked out when it comes to getting to graduate next semester. This weekend's been pretty righteous, especially since I don't have classes on Fridays and we've got today off. Went to the international street fair in the OC, went to the Greek Orthodox festival in the LBC, and heading out to the county fair right now. The boyfriend person also performed for charity on Saturday, at Metal Jam. Brandon's the guitarist on the right, in the black Metallica "Ride the Lightning" shirt. He said he dropped his pick early on and had to make due with his fingers for a third of the song. (Last edited by Rogue on 09-26-10 12:48 PM) |

Just got back from seeing "The Last Airbender" in the cheap theater. It didn't suck.
Frankly, most of the people who've been bitching about the fact that it's not exactly like the cartoon really need to find something better to do with their time. |

There were much shittier movies than this released recently. "Vampires Suck," "Jonah Hex," and "Prince of Persia" to name a few.
While the pronunciations were annoying, it's obvious they had to cut things for time. The plotline with the princess was probably the most irritating. You only see her maybe 20 minutes, it's no great tragedy that she has to give up her life so the spirit can live. And gotta love the fact that even Katara went, "Aang's been captured ... again!" Ethnicity complaints are another thing. I mean, I get it. I've made the same arguments in the past, but casting's over. The movie's made. We went through this when "Memoirs of a Geisha" came out. Oh no, the Japanese characters were played by Chinese women. I stand by the statement. It didn't suck. (Last edited by Rogue on 09-08-10 03:26 AM) |

I'm sorry. My boyfriend and I are actually laughing at how serious you guys are taking this.
Thanks for the chuckles, guys. It's just a movie. Chances are in the next 10 years there'll be a re-boot. |

You're that young? "Avatar" wasn't a part of my childhood, but I'm a big fan.
I'm excited that they're relaunching with the next avatar -- a water-bender, as it's the next in the cycle. Now, I am not a fan of the new movie. But I did get amped up during a few scenes, particularly when Sokka, Katara, and Aang get the earth-benders to stand up against the fire nation soldiers. |

I guess he was just the first one to get it all written and filmed.
He's mentioned in several interviews that he's watched the series with his kids. |

I have a series of low-to-non-paying jobs. I'm a photographer/roadie for a metal band, so that really all depends on where they play. I work at my university's paper, but right now I'm freelancing. Same thing with writing for my friend's site.
So I guess the answer is I don't work anywhere specifically. What's your favorite amusement park attraction? |

I really don't remember. We used to eat breakfast at this place down at the beach for years, but ever since my grandmother started living with us, we don't go out to eat as often.

It's been a very mentally-exhausting day talking about Siegel and Shuster, Marx and Gramsci, reading dense books explaining the latter, and then watching documentaries and movies all night.
This weekend was full of visiting museums and international festivals. My cup is so full. Time to meditate. |

Go you, Nagis. Definitely get out and do something. Fishing with your mom sounds cool.
Either way, 8 months of work and getting a Friday off now? Yeah, you could use some time away. |

We're getting ready to head out soon for a charity show Brandon's doing, plus the festival, but we'll see how it goes. Kinda bored for the time being.
* Do you have a favorite artist? What makes their work special to you? - I have a few, I suppose. Frida Kahlo is probably the top of my list, though. Her work is often abstract, but tends to convey the constant pain in her life, be it physical or emotional. * Growing up, what was your favorite comic strip? - Garfield. * Growing up, what was your favorite fairy tale or children’s story? - I used to collect the Berenstein Bears books, but I really loved fairy tales as well. I was deeply into Greek mythology as a kid, and the story of Eros and Psyche has always been a favorite. * What are your favorite television shows? How frequently do you watch them? - Since this seems to be referring to shows that are still on the air: "House" (we tend to have to download it and watch it later in the week, but we're usually up to date), "Mad Men" (same since we don't have cable), "Futurama" (same story as "Mad Men"), and "Mythbusters" (we tend to only get to watch this when we're somewhere that has cable). Otherwise all my favorite shows are no longer on the air. * What is one of your favorite quotes? Why is it special to you? - Pancho Villa's dying words: "Don't let it end like this. Tell them I said something." It just speaks to me that someone considered a great folk hero made such a human, unpolished statement. * What is your all-time favorite movie, and how many times have you seen it? - "Kung Fu Hustle." I've lost count of how many times I've seen it. * What is your favorite bumper sticker or t-shirt slogan? - I don't know. Definitely not those COEXIST stickers. Most of the people who have those are assholes. * What is your favorite poem or saying? - "Sabrina Fair," but I'm sure there are others I'm forgetting. * What is your favorite style of music? - Too many to really say there's one. There's something I love from just about every type but modern rap or hip-hop. * What was your favorite subject in school? Why? - Philosophy, but American studies is pretty high up there nowadays. * What’s one of your favorite birthday memories? - Probably my 24th birthday. Watched really old Disney cartoons, played among concrete sea monsters, ate mochi in a Japanese arcade, had rattlesnake meat sausages for lunch, did grave rubbings in this cemetery in L.A. and then got Mediterranean food for dinner. * What’s one of your favorite questions to ask? - What's your defining moment? * What’s one of your least favorite things to do? Why? - Transcribe interviews. It takes FOREVER to do, and often it's really hard to decipher what someone said. * What’s the name of your favorite magazine? What do you like most about it? - I'm not sure these days since I don't pick up many periodicals. It used to be Wizard since it was up on what was going on in the geek world. * What’s your all-time favorite band? - Flogging Molly, I suppose. * What’s your all-time favorite meal, and how often do you enjoy it? - Dim sum, I haven't had amazing imperial dim sum which I used to get back in the day like once or twice a week, in a while, but I get it when I can. Otherwise, there's Greek food. I think I've had it at least once a month for the last five years. * What’s your favorite aroma or fragrance? - Air conditioners that need to have their filters changed, burning sage, leather, and coffee. * What’s your favorite beverage? - Iced coffee, mojitos, and glass bottle sodas. * What’s your favorite Bible verse and why? - Don't have one really. I'm agnostic. * What’s your favorite board game? Do you usually win? - Trivial Pursuit. Yes. * What’s your favorite color? Why? - Purple-magenta. I used to love green, but now I just feel like purple-magenta captures my personality. * What’s your favorite fast-food restaurant and how often do you go there? - The Heart Attack Grill. I go maybe once or twice a year, since it's another state over. * What’s your favorite genre of literature? - Science Fiction/Fantasy, I suppose. I tend to read a lot of existential stuff too. * What’s your favorite kind of candy? - Chocolate, caramel and nougat in bar form. Also marzipan. * What’s your favorite picnic memory? - ![]() * What’s your favorite place to go when you want to be alone? Why? - The library. I don't often seek to be alone these days, but sometimes I just want to read and sit in the air conditioning. * What’s your favorite room in your home? Why? - Mine. It's really the only part of my house that's mine (and my boyfriend's, actually). It has our bed, our computers, our comfy chair, my books, my comics, his guitars and recording equipment. Our stuff. * What’s your favorite spectator sport, and how often do you watch it? - Don't have one, at least not one that's considered a traditional athletic sport. * What’s your favorite subject to discuss? Why? - Graphic novels, philosophy, conventions, other things in geek culture. I can pretty much talk about anything, but those are the things that I tend to know a lot about. * Where’s your favorite place to take out-of-town guests? - Depends on what they like. There's a laundry list people in L.A. love to take people to: the Getty, Exposition Park rose garden and science museums, the beach, Hollywood, Chinatown, Little Tokyo, and so on. I tend to take that list, throw it out the window, and go to the weird places. * Who was your favorite teacher growing up, and what did you like most about him or her? - Ms. Smith, my seventh grade advance English/advanced history teacher. She took us on so many great field trips, had all sorts of international feasts, had all sorts of speakers come talk to us and so on. * Who’s your favorite comedian? - Mitch Hedberg. * Who’s your favorite talk show host? - Conan. Don't care about anyone else (unless you count Daily Show and Colbert Report). |
