Yes Gaiden is better than 3, V as well due to no slowdown, Gaiden is a little easier than Gradius 3, much fairer in difficulty, but unless you import it, the only way to go is to burn it.
Plus Gaiden's stages aren't as mechanical as Gradius V's, and it has variety in levels, including the normal Gradius volcano planet level, except in Gaiden, a black hole destroys it as you're flying along, so not only do you have to put up with enemies, and volcanos, but the landscape itself coming apart and flying at you. |

DonPachi and DodonPachi are arcade, PSX Japan, and Saturn Japan only, so MAME is your best bet (burned the PSX versions myself as well) there are 4 games in the DDP series, another recently got added to MAME but isn't working correctly just yet.
Very manic Cave shooter, lots of bullets flying around a a chaining system. Bumpity bump (ok no bump then), here's how 1 CCing and 1-lifing games is done, there are shmups and some platformers here, all cleared in 1 life, some in a couple. http://www.super-play.co.uk/ (Last edited by Bloodreign on 11-23-05 07:50 AM) |

Unless you imported Gaiden (and a Japanese PSX), or moved to Japan and bought it, doubtful.
I saw one go for 30 bucks on Ebay recently, but because I don't have an import PSX (and my friends chipped PSX is dead for now) I didn't jump for it. To this day I continue to play a burned copy on an emulator (unless I can get my hands on a free mod chip, or find someone in my area who would have one cheap). |

Just got Bubble Bobble NES in the mail today, so I add another to my collection. Bought it from a guy on Digital Press Retrogaming Roundtable forums.

A hardware upgrade, blah, I'll wait for PS 3, a Gradius title could be a launch title.
I hate how these gaming companies put out a small amount of systems, and people are crazy enough to sit in the cold to pick one up. My PS 2 will hold me for awhile I think, and it's one of the first generation and still working well. |

I've owned the game a few years, it's fairly easy to get lost in the game's vast underworld, I never finished the game of course, but one day I'll have to pick up my savefile (if the battery didn't die by now in the cart) and continue on my merry way.
All in all it's not a bad game, just no map to pinpoint your location. |

The entire series is spiced with humor throughout, and just to think the first Goemen game was for the arcade, and is known as Mr. Goemen. It's not the funniest of games (very little humor at all compared to the later games for NES, and SNES, and PSX), it's more an old fashioned play for score type game.
Check it out at KLOV here: http://www.klov.com/game_detail.php?letter=M&game_id=8776 Another great Konami series, that badly needs a new title. (Last edited by Bloodreign on 12-06-05 06:34 AM) |

Normal mode eh, not too shabby, but now you have to tune the difficulty up a bit more.
Speaking of Genesis games, I just bought Ghouls N Ghosts Genesis off of Ebay, now that's a game even on the easiest setting will test your manhood, even though the Genesis version has more checkpoints per level (and a built in invincibility cheat). |

Super GnG to me seemed much tougher, but the first game in the series, Ghosts N Goblins takes the difficulty cake, I play it now and again on Capcom Classics Collection (along with Ghouls and Super Ghouls on the same disc) and regularly get my ass handed to me, I have yet to defeat the first quest (after quite a few continues I'm usually on the second to last stage), but I did beat the first quest on Ghouls.

I just spent 2 hours on the old Namco game Sky Kid, definitely a nice little old school airplane cute em up, getting practice on MAME for the Namco 50th Museum version (which is the arcade version ported to disc).

Go with Castlevania Dawn Of Sorrow, not only is it a sequel to the great Aria of Sorrow, but the game has more souls to collect, better enemy sprites (almost SotN like), and I hear Julius mode kicks 10 kinds of butt.

I usually map my buttons for emulators to X and C, in the case of SNES, W and E are my L and R buttons, and S and D are X and Y. PSX emus are a different task, pause is either space bar or V (select on my other emus), and the X,C,S,D,W,E,R, and T buttons are the PSX buttons.
And since I emu many systems, some Japanese only, it's always good to have a universal system for buttons. |

I've learned to play the Mortal Kombat MAME games (and the ports) on a keyboard, as well as Gradius games, it just takes getting used to.

I've got my Subsistence Limited Edition preorder already in, it should come with a bonus DVD as well as the original MSX versions of Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2 playable as well (NES MG was butchered, and NES never saw the true MG 2 Solid Snake game, just a quickly put together false sequel not done by Mr. Hideo Kojima).
To me Kojima seems to not be able to do wrong. (Last edited by Bloodreign on 03-16-06 11:13 PM) |

As an old avid MK series lover, the only one that disappointed me was MK 4, sure MK isn't the deepest fighter around, but the story was great at the time (I think now Boon may have tinkered with it too much), but sure the 16 bit carts can't stack up to the arcade originals, play the ones on Midway Arcade Treasures 2 then decide (MK 2 and 3 have some emulation issues, blame that on Digital Eclipse), but don't judge a series off of 16 bit carts, play it the way it was meant to be played.
P.S. : I'm an MK fan who also happens to have a liking to Street Fighter, but blame Nintendo on MK 1 being as screwed up as it is, with censorship. Blame Probe for not knowing what the hell they were doing with the Genesis MK games, blame Acclaim for being the crap company that they are who couldn't make a game to save their life, unless it was a port of someone elses game. And as for the CPU being too hard, there's patterns you know, especially in MK 2 (the arcade versions are harder, yet are cakewalk to me except UMK 3 which is mostly a difficult game). Couple that with the fact I play on a keyboard (4 years keyboard experience) ought to tell you you just need practice. (Last edited by Bloodreign on 02-25-06 08:18 AM) |

Killer Instinct also started the whole dial a combo system, it no longer took skill to pull off combos, anyone could pull them off, before then it took lots of practice to perform juggles or combos, although MK 3 continued the dial a combo thing (UMK 3 was dial a combo madness, MK Trilogy more so), KI and MK borrowed from each other and from Street Fighter. Balrog seems to have influenced TJ Combo's look, Jax influenced the powerhouse look, Cyrax was definitely influenced by Fulgore, Orchid with easy combos to pull off (perhaps the easiest) takes a cue from Kitana, who was a combo queen in MK 2. Jago was influenced by Ken and Ryu with his spinning kick (and not much of a spin), and his fireball motions.
Todays fighters are all razzle dazzle, Soul Calibur being an exception from Namco, but as for Tekken (again Namco), that's a game that takes no skill due to the fact you have more people that typically pull the same moves off over and over (friends of mine are guilty of this), DOA doesn't catch my fancy, the women are nothing but bouncy eyecandy (not that that's a bad thing mind you), and KoF could leave my hands twisted like a cripple, due to the fact moves are so hard to pull off on either a PS 2 or Dreamcast pad, they made the moves too tight to pull off smoothly, but I like the KoF series anyway. And as for Sub-Zero (old version) and Noob Saibot, they are one and the same, play MK Deception and see. All in all the fighting genre isn't as big as it was in the mid 90's, much like the shoot em up scene of the 80's. if you were a little kid back during the MK and SF days (either newborn or up to say 8 years of age) you'd likely not be as big a fan of either, unless you're a retro junkie. I've seen people bash older games because of 'bad graphics' just because they didn't appreciate the fact that during this era games looked and played a certain way, but in fact they may miss out on a fun game that could hook them in. Sorry if you don't like MK, but to each their own in terms of gaming, SF and MK back in the day had their share of fans, and much like now there was always arguments of which was better, but of course each side had their tournaments. Fighting games are more fun with a second person, or a group of friends with nothing to do. (Last edited by Bloodreign on 02-27-06 04:32 AM) |

Originally posted by Sion I have two PSX games that will not work on a PS 2 (MK Trilogy, Final Fantasy Anthology), this in turn forced me to keep my PSX. Of course I've kept all my systems except my Atari 2600 (which just pretty much died not long after purchase), and if I get a George Foreman grill........ err PS 3, I don't plan on getting rid of my PS 2, because again there could be games that aren't backward compatible. |

Yeah usually the first generation of a new system has problems, PS 2 had issues at the beginning, perhaps X-Box did as well, and 360 had issues right at the start, after awhile companies learn from their mistakes and improve the product.

Sorry to bump this topic, but the game got re-released.
Got my MGS 3S:LE in yesterday, playing it for 15 hours straight to beat the game. It came packaged with the MGS Sga DVD (complete with MGS 4 trailer), plus the original game disc, and a disc with Snake Vs. Monkey missions, a duel mode, online play (first disc), and the 2 MSX Metal Gear games (both faithful ports complete with MSX bootup screen). I've seen LE go on Ebay for between 50 to 200 bucks, I hoped at least some of you guys preordered yours if you wanted LE (Last edited by Bloodreign on 03-16-06 11:13 PM) |
