Well, to be picky, this is the first time a reason for this thread was mentioned. You simply defined the word and left it at that. Considering this is the debate shrine, it is very easy to assume that the discussion could be about the pros and cons...but how can the pros and cons be truly measured if the possibility of this happening isn't considered? Either way, the context of this thread wasn't outlined specifically enough to condemn one for speaking of the topic in a certain viewpoint. :p

**had to be 'that guy'**

With that said...I don't know you in person, but I bet it would be very easy if I did, to prove that you've committed a "crime." It doesn't make you a bad person, it makes you human. And what is and isn't a crime, isn't always clearly stated. There are a lot of gray areas. And that's what a world such as your proposing, would elminate. There's laws, rules, whatever you want to call them, and then there's the gray area.

It's against the law to run a red light. However, what would I do if say, there was an emergency with one of the passengers in my car, suddenly, and I had to rush them to the hospital? I wouldn't run red lights to be a douche, and I sure as hell wouldn't be stupid about running them, because if the idea is to get someone to safety, blazing through an intersection when it's not my turn might not be ideal. But hazard lights and a horn could make certain lights safer to pass through. But I'd still, technically, be committing a crime.

I'm not entirely sure what you're trying to convey, Vince, because you're not covering many sides of what this would entail, in your opinion. Yes, crime rates suck. And I'm all for their reduction, but still...there's MANY things to be considered as well. You've made it clear that you're for a dystiopanistic society, but you're not very convincing on it's pros.

Either way this IS an intersting discussion, and I'd be pleased to see people's opinions to their fullest, not just "This is good."

Oh, and let's say this, if it were higher powers doing the governing, then I might be all for this sort of society. Higher powers that wouldn't be corruptable and would always be fair, just, and selfless. But until the sort of "human" or better comes before us, well, I just don't trust humans as we are now, to rule such a society. Corruption will occur to those powerful enough to censor the rest of us.

I'm number 9. O_o Truthfully, didn't know I was up that high, but I know I've been here for a while. I used the post radar thing back when Xeios and Cairoi were ahead of me. What I did was put the two that were closest to me, but in front of me, and then one that is right behind me. Well, I did then, now I'm just too lazy to change it and haven't paid attention. :p But not much has changed, as far as who was where, since I surpassed Xeios.

Maybe I'll start paying attention again.

Maybe.

Alright, dude, that's AUTHORITARIANISM, not DYSTOPIANISM, which, as far as I can see, is not an actual word. A dystopian society is a "nightmare" vision of government. Though it is often seen as authoritarian or oppressive, that's only a small facet of the definition.

Alright, so let's make clear what we're doing here. :p I have been under the impression of this being a "what if" kind of deal, but taken to the extreme(the "nightmare" so to speak), hence using the word "Dystopianism." Because if it isn't, then my thoughts "outside the box" don't matter anymore. **pouts**

But Vince, you did contradict yourself quite a bit. Well, perhaps contradict is the wrong word to use, but I hope you get what I mean. If not, I'll clarify. But, one instance, you have said that people should be punished severely for even speaking of a crime. That right there made your malice toward crime evident. But then, a few sentences later, you dumb it down for yourself by stating "I have never had the "rush" or "lust" to commit a crime. I don't want to, I talk about it a lot but i wouldn't go through with it." Not going through with it is very noble indeed, but by your standards, if the society in which you are imagine were real, you would have been severely punished, should that statement you made be true. And that statement, came across to me at least as saying that sure you've mentioned it, but it's not that bad because you'd never actually DO it. Which, is fine in my opinion, but just before that, you freverently proclaimed that one should not even speak of crime.

That right there is the exact reason why a totally controlling government would lead to a real nightmare. Think of it this way. You're the one proposing the idea. So pretend in this thread your world is real. You are the government in charge, and those who replied are the people you govern. If WE speak of crime, we get severely punished. But you, it's okay that you do, because you would never committ the crime. It doesn't matter that we wouldn't go through with it either, we're being punished for speaking of it. But an exception has been made for yourself. An unfair exception. But you can do that. You're in control. And we can't do anything about it. Its a very miniscule example, but I hope you see what I'm trying to convey. The people governing won't be fair and just. People aren't capable of that yet. Well, they aren't capable of being fair and just at ALL times, and if they're running the show like you're proposing, then revolt would occur anyway. As Cairoi said, go through history. You'll see. :p

You like the movie 300? It was based off the actual battle of Thermopylae. The Spartans took a stance because they were being suppressed. Someone else was coming in to run them and control their lives. And they revolted. They stood up for themselves. Now, don't get me wrong, I know the Spartans weren't perfect either. No one is. That's my point. We all have the ability to defend ourselves, and we all have the ability to supress. All of us. So the society in which you are proposing would not eliminate crime, in my opinion, because there would either be revolt, or those in charge would be criminals themselves through their suppression.

I'm not trying to knock you down here, Vince, but you opened up a serious discussion of ideas that will not submit to the will of another, without real proof and support. You're making points, but you're not supporting them. I think it's wonderful that you were so bold as to bring up such a discussion, so don't take offence to the "attack" I may seem like I'm pulling on you. Consider it something to nurture your thoughts. Don't just say what you think. Fight back. Say WHY you think what you think. Refute what others are saying with facts to support your opinions. But in a way, you HAVE this chance to "fight back", to come back and further your thoughts and attempt to deter my own, because we are not in the society in which you proposed. :p But prove me wrong.

Prepare for a bit of a long one, folks.

FML. Seriously. Spent the last several weeks in and out of hospitals. There's a part of my childhood I never wanted to re-live. At least my father's drunken evenings produced hilarious opportunities of blackmail.

Still don't know exactly what's wrong with me. All I know is I was able to get enough tests done to say "Hey, you're not having a heart attack right now, so you can last the 30 days or so your FREAKING HEALTH INSURANCE BULLSHIT is taking to handle." In the mean time, I'm out of work, because I can't work more than an hour without chest pains severe enough to bring me to my knees and in tears. WHEN I can catch my breath during the entire ordeal at least. So I'm not making money and won't be until I get this straightened out. I have a small resivoir, but it's technically already spent. It's the exact amount I need for school this Fall, so yeah...

But yeah, only thing they have been able to tell me is the pains that shoot down my right AND left arms, sometimes at the same time, is that they're NOT due to a pinched nerve, my heartrate and blood pressure are beyond abmornal, and oh, did I mention my lips turn blue, my ankles swell up, I bloat terribly, I can't breathe, and I wake up in pins and needles in my arms and legs, like I wasn't getting proper circulation? Yeah, these heart-failure signs have landed me in the hospital several times, recently. And when I'm NOT dealing with that bull, my hockey teeth are getting the best of me, and I can't afford a dentist at this second either.

Fuck. my. life.

But on a plus side, my boss is working with me. I guess I'm lucky to say I work for individuals that care about me, and one lady at the hospital has arranged that other than the amount I've already paid, payments for my payment plan won't be due until the end of August, and my insurance should kick in by then, and they should handle any bills I may have already gotten.

(OOC: K, so we CAN'T play ourselves? XD Fun. Also, trying to get my scanner working at the same time, so this post is bit rushed. My appologies in advance if I am confusing, or just plain dumb about this.)

"Wait."

From a shaded spot in the circle, just under the oddly lush green palm tree came a tiny voice. It was easy for small and demure Madelene to hide furthest away from being the center of attention. Her usually soft and fine blonde hair was now frayed, the ends split, and tangled tufts forming a mane about her round face. Bruises formed about her cheekbones, chin, and who knows where else they may be, in smoky blotches as they blended with the scrapes and dirt that came with her...fall? She could remember just as much as the others.

Under the rubble that was once her bright complexion and big blue eyes, her pink lips pursed together as though she wanted to say more. She didn't remember much before feeling her limp body being roughly drug across the sand. Her second memory was that of coughing up some sort of salty liquid, and some sort of green, slimy substance. It was after those events that her mind put together this beach, followed by the realization that the abrupt, rough treatment of her unconscious self was an effort to save her from drowning along the coast. Once she was ashore, seeing the gawking of more people she was unfamiliar with, Madelene's first instinct was to run a frantic wardrobe check, especially upon viewing the tattered clothes of the others. Modesty did always come first for Madelene, she had enough of her wits about her by that point to maintain that trait of her's. To her pleasure, despite the torn, tattered and soaked nature of her red pajama pants and black tank top, nothing that would truly mortify her was to be seen. Her undergarments were luckily intact, and the only disappointing part of it all was that she had no shoes.

Madeline was tiny yet built, being the perfect ballerina she was pressured to be, and her skin easily tanned. But she was quiet, shy, and in the very least, openly frightened.

She pointed to the man with the tattoos, sharpening what appeared to her from across the circle to be some sort of blade. "Um..." She paused, the thought of making any sound, doing anything to be noticed petrifying her to her core, and took in a deep breath. "As I'm sure food and shelter is of great importance..." She cleared her throat with a sound that would hardly be audiable to anyone, just like everything she did. Quietly. "But I think that gentleman over there may have the right idea." She blushed. She did not care to single out another just as much as being singled out herself terrified her. "We need to be able to defend ourselves. Otherwise, food and shelter is meaningless..."

And with another deep breath, Madelene leaned back on the rock in which she was perched, curling up her legs so her chin could rest on her knees, wishing she could be under her current perch, not on top of it.

"Madelene." She says quietly, her eyes barely making contact with the boy. It was only when she reached down to investigate the item thrown her way did she look up at him. A meek smile was offered at best, along with a nod, grateful for some quick agreeance.

(OOC: Watch it Astronaut. I did not divulge any sort of age in my last post's description. Teehee.)

She looked over at the one named Frankie and frowns. However, she did tilt her head questioningly, awaiting the answer of the strange man beside Frankie.

(OOC: **UBER giggles** You were a priest when we first met too!!! )

Madelene looked up at Wright and smiled, in her usual meek way. "Thank you very much." she replied "But I'm alright. I'm just confused I guess." She took a look around at everyone else "Well, we all have that in common at least." She added.

However, her gaze moved over to the old woman, Victoria. She wanted to ask her some questions, such as how she was so calm. She DID seem to be there before everyone. At least settled in before them. But what to call her, Madelene wondered. She never did feel right calling those her senior simply by their first name. Despite being 20 years old, the disrespect in it seethed on out and quite frankly, disgusted her.

But before she could get a chance to do or say anything, another member joined the crowd.

A priest!! she thought to herself, releif overpowering her. Totally oblivious to the fear in his demeanor, her face lit up the moment the man introduced himself. Being born and raised by Catholics, as far as her cloudy memory can muster, she was taught to trust in the clergy. And being the good Catholic girl she thought she remembered herself to be, she had no reason to distrust them.

Madelene watched in silence as the old woman rose to her feet with the assistance of the boy who seemed to appear right after she. Questions burned inside her, but she decided it was better to observe, to gain as clear of a head as possible. Were she to miss something, any mental advantage over her current position could be lost.

The last of us...? But how..? she pondered as she skeptically rose to her feet, brushing herself off as she stood up. With one last smile of gratitude in both the directions of Chris and Wright, she turned to face the old woman, somber and alert.

Madelene's eyes widened in shock at Frankie's outburst. For a moment, her eyes narrowed, an attempt to express displeasure, but it was quickly washed away by the shock that replaced it. The other person in the military garments, Ace, had taken the time to thoroughly abuse the boy with his words and she was thankful when Father Donahue stepped in.

At that, she reached behind her, searching for Wright's hand with her own and grasping it gently when she found it. "Let's just tag along for a little while." She whispered back to Wright, hardly taking her attention from Victoria. "Whatever it is, it's a lot safer than being separated from such a large group." She spoke those last words a little more loudly, stealing a glance in Frankie's direction, and with a wink, her gentle voice added "At least this way there are more people to trip in case we face those pumas."

And yeah...Damn being out of town...but...I WAS in Disney for Star Wars Weekend, and made friends with every 5-year-old in line waiting to get pictures with me... They had storm trooper guns and I didn't. But then one kid shared.

**cough** Woulda been badass though...but under the conditions (The Pens making it to the Cup) it could have possibly been a VERY strained visit. XD Some people are racist, sexist, or whatever "ist" you can find. I'm "hockey-ist." XD XD

**dies** It's only been two full weeks of school, and I'm fully prepared for a break already. I'm gunning for perfect attendance, because that means that every lowest grade will be dropped, and art school is difficult. Mostly in the sense that there's nothing to study for, per se. I have to hope that I can read minds. Following directions doesn't always work. So...gotta hope my work always impresses, cuz I want that damn president's list, damn it! I'm gunning for scholarships and job opportunities BIG time, so I need to get the most I can out of this place. I'll be there for the next 4 years though, so hopefully I'll impress SOMEONE by then and land a decent job. XD Otherwise, been running on low, worked 40 hours last week and STILL went to school every day. School is 9-3 Mon-Fri, btw. Pulled three all-nighters already, but I have nothing lower than a B+ thus far, so it's paying off. This week I'm back to only working 20 hours, so this week was just weird. I suddenly had free time, and it freaked me out. My mind like couldn't handle it.

But yeah...my first three day weekend is coming up. Monday, Oct 11th I'm off, so that'll be awesome. (Yes, I have my days off memorized. XD ) But yah...mostly been comsumed with school, the family, and work. Before I had to take my leave of absence last time, I wasn't very competitive, and very lazy with the work. I only did the bare minumum. But, fuck that, that top of the class spot is mine now. XD (Took me a year and a half to realize HOW competitive my field is, and yes, one can be competitive without being a complete jerk, so that's my goal as well. But yah, jobs are scarce as it is, so being an illustrator and graphic designer is going to be tough finding something.)
