| It's the good old argument of free will versus determinism. Free will meaning that humans have choices and pick their own paths while with determinism it's the idea that a higher being creates a destiny for everyone or that no one really has a choice and everything is out of their hands.
In the '80s, the Me! Generation, a new breed of rich person was born--the billionaire. Anything and everything became possible. It was the time to spend, spend, spend. If you've got it, flaunt it. You can have it all! It became a time of self-creation and stealing one's destiny from the hands of fate. What the hell has happened since then? People go on trial and get off on technicalities. Suddenly nothing is a person's fault. Have you heard of this Gone with the Wind syndrome? Rapists actually get off on this. If we all believe that we control our own actions why is a person not being charged with murder because he claims he ate so many Twinkies it made him crazy? It somewhat makes me angry how our culture has also embraced heavily medicating people for typical behavior. ADD. I've watched so many children go on meds because they were being kids. The general direction of the thread was to discuss how this world doesn't simply take responsibilty for its actions--namely when a problem occurs it's suddenly no one's fault. Everyone's shouting, "Not me!" when someone questions who's to blame for a social problem, crime, etc.

The flawed system is a product of this, of people's justifying their behavior on flawed issues. Example: The courts excuse a man for shooting his wife because he was mistreated as a child. The ADD thing was simply a side-note on this problem. As in people are suddenly not just normal, healthy people any more, but are diagnosed with so-called syndromes and disorders when there's nothing wrong with them. ADD, in general, is a fad. Suddenly EVERYONE'S got it and has to take Ritalin. For fuck's sake, people have short attention spans naturally. We live in a world where there are images coming at us a mile a minute and we can change them with a click. The mere fact that people are told they have something allows them to excuse their actions. Seriously though, does anyone ever really blame a mentally retarded person for what they do? Sure if they were to kill someone it would be in question, but like in WhiteRose's case when one smashed a bottle on her car, could anyone really say anything and hold him to what he did?

Out of a bit of prodding from a friend, I joined Gaia a few days ago and have played a bit every day since. Granted the game is rather addicting, but many facets of it simply annoy the hell out of me.

First off, the main goal of the site is to earn enough gold to buy or trade for rare items for your avatar to wear and accessorize their homes with. Truly this goal is a novelty, but it's almost obnoxious when one is confronted with elaborately dressed regulars taunting you for your starter clothes, but such is being a newbie. Second, it seems as though EVERYONE on the site is in their pre-teens and what's more cannot write for shit. The site is riddled with improper grammar, PeOpLe TyPiNg LiKe ThIs, or r talkng 2 u lik ths lawl, and half of the people seem to have an attitude. While I was playing a game in their "casino" (the casino only has slots and black jack), I tried to socialize with people in the little chat boxes at the bottom of the screen. Upon mentioning my rotten luck with the dealer, one chimes in to say, "lawl u suk" and I jokingly replied back, "Yeah, my luck sucks." To which another goes, "No u sukk. Fuck ur." Erm... great comeback? Who triggered this little fight? I laughed and said that he was funny (sarcastically) to which other people jumped in to agree (seriously). Then I asked how old they all were and got back an assortment of 11s and 14s while the one who made the comment didn't answer. Good grief. A couple days ago when I was chatting with a rather nice person, they happened to ask how old I was. I told him 21, but was immediately inundated with people telling me I'm old. I laughed for a bit. Third point, much to my chagrin, the place is a frickin' mini-MySpace. While walking around in the little RPG section, I kept getting approahed by people who'd suddenly run up to my character and declare, "Friend me!!" Um... who are you? I'd watch these people have a couple words with each other before the friend requests would be brought up. It wouldn't be much, but more of a "Hi!" "Wut up?" "Friend me!" Not only this, but most of the site is pretty much a hybrid of MySpace and LiveJournal. If you're on both sites, you'd marvel at the ridiculous likenesses of the layouts and ideas. Law suit worthy, really. Not to sell the site short. There are some really nice people on there and some interesting little additions, but overall the site is mostly one big piss-off to anyone over 18. I dunno. Anyone have anything to say about it? People inherently are greedy and out to cover their own asses, this is true. But look at our forefathers who declared their rebellion by signing their names large enough for the tyrant to not need to use his reading glasses.

People just lack integrity nowadays, I suppose. As I look over that post, I realize I didn't mean that people are not out to take responsibility, but that they are not held to it. Our justice system now excuses people for "The devil made me do it" and "It's not my fault, I have a disorder" declarations. Is everything so out of people's hands? No one has choices any more. You didn't choose to kill that woman, your addiction to violent video games did, thus it's Sony's fault a woman's dead. Riiiiight.

I think I'm done with Gaia. Originally I joined because my 20-something-year-old friend was raving about it. Go figure, though. EDIT: As I read over that thread, it appears that the OP, though they have a female avatar and claim to be female in their profile, is actually male and was raped by his female fiance. Yeah, when I first heard about this yesterday I wasn't surprised and yet I was at how he died. With all of his man-handling of poisonous snakes and other dangerous reptiles and such, you'd think he wouldn't have gone down like some tourist. |
