I need to get off my lazy butt on my days off, and try and earn my weapon edits in Gradius 3 PS 2, and stage select Gradius 4 PS 2. Weapons edit 1 is an hour and a half from being unlocked, the second one is 10 hours later. Stage select for 4, is about 8 and a half hours away.
Another good hard side scrolling shooter is R-Type, my second favorite shooter series of all time. |

Here's a good side scroller that's not a shooter, but man is it ever tough....Ghosts N'Goblins or Ghouls/Super N' Ghosts. I just got through playing the X68000 system version and used up 6 of my 9 continues on stage 1-2, only to see my last 3 used in 2-1 and 2-2. This game series has a reputation for taking no prisoners in the difficulty department, a series staple.
There are many versions of all 3 games, tell your nightmares of this series. |

I own Ghosts N Goblins NES, and Super Ghouls N Ghosts SNES, haven't popped any in a system for awhile, it's been PS 2 or emulation for me, I'm trying to get my PSX modded, so i can play Capcom Generations 2 (the 3 GnG games in one package), and the Gradius Deluxe Pack, Salamander Deluxe Pack, and Gradius Gaiden. The discs have been tested and were burned correctly, I just lack a modded PSX to play them on ( a friend is suppsed to do it for me for free, he's stalling for time, because another friend has a card that will fit in back of the system saving surgery), that leaves R-Types and R-Type Delta left to snag, pretty much giving me a library of good tough games to play.
Back on the GnG thing though, the Genesis version has an invincibilty code, the only way I ever beat the game for that system. I'd love to own a real version of that game, as well as a Daimakaimura (Ghouls N Ghosts Japan) hucard for PC Engine/ Turbographix 16. Blacklord, good to see you into Gradius, but I didn't know you played GnG. At this rate of good/ great classics this thread could go on a long time. (Last edited by Bloodreign on 03-27-05 10:44 PM) |

The last beat em up I saw and remember was Fighting Force for PSX, the game sadly was on the easy side, unlike Final Fight or a number of old beat em ups which required skill to complete.
Hell even fighting games aren't as big as they used to be, sure they are still around, but nearly as huge as they once were. |

Jaguar didn't have enough support or good games, it tried to be ahead of it's time but failed. It was past Atari's primetime and after being burned by Atari in the past, many people simply moved on.

Abigail is the Park boss from Final Fight 1, he's cheap as hell, and when he gets pissed he charges at you lightning fast. I particularly hate him no matter what system.
Final Fight 1 is also available for Sega CD, as Final Fight CD, and on X68000. (Last edited by Bloodreign on 04-01-05 12:51 AM) |

As far as SotN goes, it's not my favorite game in the series, CV 3 is. I've had the opportunity to play each and every version of CV games that exist, while it is the prettiest 2-D CV, it started a nasty trend of having a second (or for the Japanese Saturn game NitM, which had a playable Maria, a third character) character with absolutely no story line. Even Rondo of Blood is better from what time I've put into it.
The game is innovative though and started the trend of Castleroid games we see now. I still own the original SotN I preordered long ago, and got on it's release date. (Last edited by Bloodreign on 04-16-05 07:15 AM) |

Haha vampire wizard, that would be Count Orlox, right hand man of Dracula. As for castle completion percentage I have a friend who works with glitchers and they've neared the 400% mark using glitching techniques.
I've since retired the game but beat the game with both Al and Richter, and in the Saturn NitM (Nocturne in the Moonlight, the Japanese name for SotN) Maria is also playable. |

Yes I remember the game, I never owned it but I've heard of it, I believe it has a sequel also for NES, Kagi no Solomon is the Japanese name for it. Fire and Ice may be the name of the sequel, both games were made by Tecmo, and Solomon's Key is a port of an old arcade game by the same name.

From the creators of Gradius, Konami made this series to spoof Gradius, it eventually branched out into 3 more games making fun of more Konami games. There's tons of wacky humor within the game, although the difficulty is as high as Gradius.
Parodius Da ! - this game saw releases on arcade, SNES, Gameboy, X68000, MSX (this version came out 2 years before the arcade one), and PC Engine, it was the original Gradius spoofer, and stuck strictly just to Gradius. Gokujou Parodius - released for arcade, and SNES, this one poked fun at Gradius a little more but the humor is better, not to mention it has a disco based level. Jikkyou Oshaberi Parodius - SNES release, more wacky humor, has tons of Konami character cameos, some you can play as, very funny game, collect fairies to unlock stuff. Sexy Parodius - arcade and PSX, this game has mission objectives, plus parodies on Yie Ar Kung Fu (you can shoot Oolong near the end) and Castlevania just to name a few parodies. Fail to finish a mission objective and you don't get the best ending. Parodius Da ! and Gokujou Parodius were released on PSX and Saturn as Parodius Deluxe Pack, Jikkyou Oshaberi was also released on PSX and Saturn, and like the SNES version there's this old guy constantly egging you on in Japanese, Sexy as far as I know is PSX only and has some revealing but not pornographic pics of anime style girls. Has anyone ever gotten a chance to play this wacky series, if so do share your experience. |

Seriously check these games out in ROM format (carts are PAL or Japan only, unless you have a Super Famicom) these games will amuse you although the first game really isn't as funny as the other three in the series.

Gradius 3 is murder more on arcade than SNES, but still challenging enough.
I've just downloaded the PSX version of Jikkyou Oshaberi Parodius (bin / cue form), I've only played one stage of it to test the CD burn, but I've noticed many more background touches such as an airplane flying, plus the song "That's the way I like it" (K.C. and the Sunshine Band) sounds more like the old disco tune than the SNES version. I'm currently waiting on the other games to finish d/ling. And starngely enough I prefer the Vic Viper, although I did use one of the girls on Jikkyou. I also used the Paper airplane guy once (can't remember his name right off the top of my head) (nm it's these guys Koitsu, Aitsu, Soitsu & Doitsu) who uses a condom as a shield. Here's a place where you can read a little up on the games. It's from Kurt Kulata's Hardcore Gaming 101 site. http://www.classicgaming.com/reviews/parodius/parodius.htm And we talk Gradius here, although there is a section for Parodius, Salamander, and Twinbee. http://www.gamestone.co.uk/gradius/forumbb/index.php (Last edited by Bloodreign on 06-16-05 01:01 AM) |

I'm not a fan of X-Box, I own a PS 2 draw conclusions from there.
PS 3 in my book, but I'll likely wait a bit, because PS 2 memories of how hard it was to get one will come flooding back. |
