| If you've ever seen the movie Fight Club or read the book, I'm sure you've heard the term used before. For those who haven't a clue as to what I'm referring to it means meeting people at random, maybe talking with them and then you never see them again. Example: The people whom you sit next to on a plane or someone who might be standing in line behind you at the super market. They're all around you. People whom you have brief contact with, say a few words, maybe exchange e-mail addresses, who knows. Getting a single serving of them, if you will.
We don't really get to know people any more, matter of fact we sometimes wall ourselves in to make sure we never have to speak with anyone else. It's quite odd really. There's really not much human contact any more because everything's just boiled down to the minimal of what we have to say to each other to smoothly go on without really talking or feeling each other. I do the same, even though I'm aware of it. I suppose I feel intimidated by people. I'm often the person who hesitates to partner up with people for group assignments in class. I abhor phones. It's just strange. Anyway, what's the most interesting random contact you've ever had with a person? A couple years ago, when I was answering phones for the ad manager at our paper, I got a call from a guy who wanted to place an ad for a charity concert he was putting together that would be headlined by A Perfect Circle among many other bands. Not long into the call, somehow the discussion turned into asking each other how their day was going and then winded down to wanting to live in houses like the ones in Lord of the Rings. It was just odd because normally people only call to leave a message and then promptly hang up, but for nealy an hour we were just chatting about anything and everything despite not knowing anything else about the other person and eventually we traded phone numbers. Of course he and I never really spoke again, but it was a moment when I realized there was another living, breathing person out there and not just faceless extras in this so-called world of becoming. | See, I understand what you're saying, but what I love to do is to talk to random people and get to know them, because I love people, I think they're the greatest thing on the planet. When I'm in a line for something I'll talk to the people around me, or I'll talk to the person serving me, asking them how their day has gone, and stuff like that.
One time I was in the line for Pirates of the Carribean 2, and I was bored, so I started singing "The Saftey Dance" by Men Without Hats. And all of a sudden, the guy next to me started singing along, I got suprised, and then we entertained everybody by singing the whole song together. Then we discussed our favorite songs and stuff, and I pretty much got to know everybody he was going with. This guy had rocking sideburns and a ponytail, and he was with a large blond guy and the blond guy's parents, but the parents got here late and had to go further down the line. The guy with the sideburns had a girlfriend named Amy with red dyed hair and yeah. As you can tell, I'm rather social. |

| Heh, looks like you've got the right outlook, Cairoi.
I've become more open with talking to people, but mostly I seem to have the most long and out there conversations with homeless people. It's really a humanizing eye-opener to speak with them. Your story reminded me of all the times I'd go to conventions and end up singing Dr. Demento songs with people in line. It's only happened on two different occasions, but it was really amusing when it would go on. One of those you-had-to-be-there things. Heh. When I used to work for my Rocky Horror cast, and hang out in the dance pit before the show, regulars used to bring me virgins to dance with and it usually involved talking to them about it being their first time and whatnot. Most of the time I never really spoke with them again, but Rocky's one of those places where random people just hug you just because. LOTS and LOTS of random touching and affection there. On a couple different occasions, guys used to approach me and undo, then re-tie my corset. 
Actually it also reminds me of this time I came to the show after the masquerade this year and people kept approaching me to talk about my costume. One girl wearing nothing but chainmail came up to me and started complimenting my costume and half hit on me. I told her she looked even better and asked if she didn't mind if I took her picture. She immediately started posing and wanted me to take a lot of pics. Here's one of them:  |

| Meh, I've never had any 'single serve' friends (That I can remember anyway ). I'm not really that good at meeting new people. Of course if people talk to me I'll reply but it's usually nothing more than an exchange of hellos. |

| I get them more often now, but last night I received a random IM from a person whom wanted to know about the LG VX9900 (he found a post I had made in the BREW forums). We talked, very briefly, about his obsession with the device, and about his current ownership of the LG VX9800. But, much to his dismay, I refused to give up anything on the details of the phone (it's not released yet, but work has them for testing purposes).
Once had a rather lengthy discussion about Star Trek with a complete stranger on the San Diego Troller (happened to be dressed in the DS9 uniform). Ohter than that, I don't really remember the chance conversations as I try to avoid them at all costs. People are just annoying, in general. |

| I was at Ozzfest and some old guy was saying shit about Marilyn Manson (who was on stage at the time). I got pissed off and started to bitch him out when two other guys backed me up. They were like early twenties (I was 16 at the time), in full "heavy metal" face paint, and in the Army. After the old guy backed off the three of us sang along to Manson, talked about our favorite songs, and they got me and the other girl I was with (friend's cousin) some water. My brother showed up and reunited us with our group and I never saw them again, but it was an awesome experience. | |||

| HAHAHA!! That reminds me of this one time, during one of the Flogging Molly concerts that Brandon and I went to, there was this guy in front of Brandon and me and he kept singing and dancing with his girlfriend. I, too, was singing and jumping up and down and getting really into it. Several times he and I danced together and high-fived and near the end of the concert, he gestured at Brandon and yelled, "Never let her get away!" | |||

| Wait, wait. Remember Theater Boy and Anime Girl? Do those count? I mean, having some kid talk to you about the misadventures of his cat for the few minutes while I was gone to the bathroom and a few minutes after had to have been at least a single serving of an annoying friend. And, Anime Girl was just a piece of work.
Also, Anime Girl was shared among WhiteRose and Elara, I believe. There were Disneyland Annual Passholder that I considered single serving friends, even if I did know them by name and I saw them practically everyday--if not every week. But, they were just people that were at Disneyland all the time, shared the same interest in what I was trained for, and knew me by name. Hell, a nice couple actually had my home address and sent me Christmas cards well after a year after I left Disneyland service. But, these people weren't friends. They were extended single serving friends. I only saw them at work, and while I did talk to them, I mostly did it out of obligation to do so. |

| Actually Anime Girl was WhiteRose and me while we were at that mall with the Prius just before heading up to San Francisco with Heather and Casey.
I don't know why I sometimes just attract these people, but yeah, I suppose they count. Theater Boy doubley so since he for some reason got to be too friendly with me. He was just going on all these different tangents while I glanced over at him occasionally. I dunno. I at least try to listen and be interested, though he was just a little too strange. | Anime Girl, I remember her all too well. One single servin friend I could have done without.
Some of the most interesting single serving friends I have ever experienced have been in Target while standing in line, especially this one lady who I swear is an older version of me since she has a degree in psychology and was (or still is more than likely) a high school psychology teacher and plays D&D on her spare time. |

I got one more, but only because I see him once a week or so--the gas station attendant. I don't really talk to him much, just enough to tell him what pump and how much, but he seems to always be eager to strike up a conversation with me regardless of how busy I might be. I guess he figures he's got me while he's setting up the pump. |

| Heh, as I was reading over the past posts on this thread, I remembered another couple of single serving friends I made during Comic-Con this year.
I didn't have enough change to take the trolley down to the convention center that morning and ended running down the street to the McDonald's to break a $20. When I got back to the station, there was this guy standing next to me who I asked how he was doing. Next thing I know we're having this LONG discussion of video games and all sorts of things. When the train came, he and I were talking and standing next to each other on the trolley. He walked with me all the way to the convention center and then wanted me to go with him the Nintendo DS booth, where he was an exhibitor, around that point I had to go to a signing, so I waved good-bye and never saw him again. Another single serving friend I made was this girl named Indigo who was wearing a Utilikilt and had a blue mullet. We were waiting in line to see Densha Otoko and we just kept talking. Even when we got in the theater she and I sat next to each other and when she went to the bathroom she brought back posters of the movie for everyone in our row. She was an amusing person to talk to and even wanted to high-five when I mentioned that I watch things on YouTube. Hehe. |
