A sudden knock on the door stirred Jack Graves, a slightly chubby man of 32, out of his slumber. He leaned over and stared at his alarm clock. "Shit. Three A.M.? Who the hell is it at this time of night?" He grabbed his silenced Springfield 9mm and stumbled through his cluttered apartment. Another knock on the door. "I'm coming, you dumb fuck!" Jack snapped. He leaned his weapon against the door and looked through the peep hole. A unidentified man stood outside. That was incriminating enough for Jack to cock the hammer. "Who are you?" Jack inquired. The man replied. "I'm Charlie. Vinnie sent me." Jack sighed a breath of relief and uncocked the hammer on his 9mm. "A job? Why didn't he just call me?" Jack asked. "The Feds have his placed bugged. Really makes business difficult, ya know." Charlie said. "Meet him down at Ricardo's at 4 P.M. sharp. If you are just a few minutes late, he'll give the job to someone else. 'Kay?". Jack nodded. "Thanks, man. See you later." Charlie turned around and walked into the darkness of the stairwell.

(The next day, at Ricardo's)

Jack walked to the table where Vinnie, an overweight man in his 40's, was enjoying a burrito. "Well, look who finally showed up." Vinnie snapped. "Sorry, Vinnie. Traffic was hell." Jack said as he sat down. "... Let's cut straight to business." Vinnie said, "My brother, Jimmy, disappeared yesterday. I found these in his hidden vault." Vinnie finished by throwing two pictures on the table. They featured what looked like a man with a veloceraptor's head. "Old Halloween photos?" Jack snorted. Vinnie glared at him. "Jimmy showed these to me once. He got them out of an old associate's farm house after all of it's occupants were massacred. They both knew that these photos were detrimental somehow and hid them well. Two nights ago I recieved a call from some assholes who said they were going to kill me if I don't give the photos to them Now, I want you to take them and deliver them to a nightclub in New York called the Dragon." Vinnie's eyes widened with fear. "Jack, I'm only a small-time crime lord. These bastards are obvious professionals, and I want these damn things gone. Make it happen, and I'll deposit ten grand into your account." As Vinnie concluded, he paid his bill, stood up, and briskly walked out. Jack sat there eyeing the photos. "... Ten grand. Not too bad for a courier's job." He stood up and walked out of Ricardo's.

Three gun shots rung out of the parking lot, as Jack hit the floor. Sudden flashbacks of his tour in the Somalian Conflict briefly blinded Jack's vision. He jumped up and tore out of the door, fearing his paycheck is at stake. Jack pulled out his Colt .45 Hardballer, straining his eyes to find Vinnie. Jack saw Vinnie laying on the ground next to his vintage Berracuda, smoking .38 still in his hand. Jack raced over to Vinnie's side. "Are you okay?" Jack asked. Vinnie only groaned before expiring. Jack searched for wounds, only to find three gaping cuts lined perpindicular to each other in his chest. "Holy shit." Jack said, as he searched around the parking lot for his killers. Police sirens suddenly became audible. Confused and pissed off , Jack fled the scene.

Jack returned to his apartment to stuff his duffel bag with clothes and supplies. He dragged a large briefcase out of his closet and placed a collapsible M4, two .357s, his prized Hardballer, a sawn off double barrel 10 gauge and his silenced 9mm in the stylish metal briefcase. He rushed out of his apartment, terrified that if he doesn't make it to Vinnie's HQ soon, that he'll be joining with his employer in hell.

Lou, Vinnie's most trusted financial advisor, was lounging under a sun umbrella. He squinted his eyes at Angelo, a bodguard. "What?" Lou asked. "A Jack Graves wants to see you, sir." Angelo replied. "... Oh, the mercenary! Of course! Let him in." The bodyguard motioned Jack in. Jack walked onto the patio. "I trust you heard what happened." Jack said. "... Yes. It's a shame, Jack." Lou replied. "... Strange, Lou. You don't sound very concerned." Jack said. "Well, you're right. I've been waiting to take over this piece of shit operation for years. Sorry, but business is business. Are you gonna hold it against me?" Lou snapped. "...No, sir. I just wanted to to tell you that the lives of everyone in this cabana are in dire danger." Jack said. "Oh... and let me guess... lizard people?" Lou chuckled. "How'd you know?" Jack asked. "I saw the photos, Jackie boy. I think they're fake, 'kay? We are not going to discuss this anymore, Jackman... Wait, do you still have the photos?" Lou snapped. Jack said nothing as he chucked the pics on the end table next to Lou. "... Here is a ticket to St. Augustine. Take a week off and try to forget this nasty incident. I'm your new employer now, so get over it." Lou finished with a dismissive wave.

"Good riddance." Jack thought as he glanced at the photos for one more time. "I'll be damned to take a vacation now. There something out there, and I'm going to find out."

TBC...
