The industry is working on changing the way we protect our computers. The industry calls it trusted computing. Anything connected to the internet or providing information in any way will be preprogrammed with what the industry feels can be trusted and what cannot. But, the industry has already decided it cannot trust you? Do we want this in our newer electronics?

well, I'm not against increasing protection on computers.... I doubt there are many that would complain about that...

and really, it all depends on what exactly is decided upon as being trusted and not trusted...

but not having the choice to change that.... seems stupid.... if it's my own computer and I'm doing something stupid, then sucks to be me...

[edit] I really did enjoy the video.... the little guy with the arrow was cool [/edit]

I liked the video, nice animations and got the point across.

I like control over my computer, I want to be able to designate what I should be able to trust and what I should be able to flag as a threat not have the computer do that for me. The computer can only do so much where as I am smarter than the computer since...
1) Computers don't have any intelligence
2) My computer, I bought and paid for it therefore if I mess it up then I should be able to mess it up as much as I want.
3) The computer world needs its balance of power being what people see as good and evil.

From the site

In the USA there's a planed bill, the so called CBDPTA (Consumer Broadband and Digital Television Promotion Act). First it was callen SSSCA (Security Systems Standards and Certification Act). The new name reads much more harmless. Looks like the first name made it too easy to discover the purpose of this bill.
This bill plans to legally force secure (TCPA-conform) systems. So in the USA it would then not be allowed to buy or sell systems that are not TCPA-conform. Passing this law would be punished with up to 5 years of prision and up to $500.000 fine. The same would apply for development of "open" software. Open means that it would work on systems that're not TCPA-conform.
Even if this bill would only valid in the USA it would have catastrophically effects worldwide. Because US companies are not allowed to develop and sell "unsecure" software, others would have to jump onto the TCP-train, so they would give total control over themself to the TCPA (USA?), or they would have to live completely without software and harware from US-companies. No Windows, Solaris, MacOS, Photoshop, Winamp or to say it short: The largest part of all software that's used on this planet would not be usable.

Not fucking cool at all.

Exactly. We'd lose the ability to use programs we love, and that would also terminate open-source software such as this board, FireFox, Mozilla, and a few other things that have helped make computing easier. If this means that we're trying to move towards a "better" computer industry, then we must do everything in our power to educate the masses and stop the Trusted Computing industries.

I'm sure we'd like to continue to use computer without threats of imprisonment or fine.

I really don't have too much to contribute to this topic other than what has already been said, Obviously this is an awful idea and is about taking the freedom away from the users of the computer. If this should become mandatory on all OEM PCs I could definitely see a rise in people getting their 'geek' friends to build their computers.

This kind of reminds me of what Richard Stallman says about DRM.

He calls it Digital Restriction Management.

Eventually, and hopefully not too late, all these protection systems will fail. If not, there's always linux and its clones to break the DRM and its minions of software. Ah, for some reason, I look forward to the days of pirating not only computer software but computer hardware.
