Well okay, My step dad and I were casually listening to the news while I was in the kitchen a few minutes ago and I happened to overhear this story about a woman who read anti-america things due to her life being in danger if she didn't. Basically if she didn't do it they were going to kill her.

And I happened to mention that I would burn the american flag if I had a gun to my head. And he lost it. :o

Am I unamerican because I want to have a future and am not willing to lose it over some cloth and dye? And don't go on a rant about what the flag "represents".

People act as if the flag is some magical faith omen and if you burn it every American will become slaves.

It's not that. It's just that you can't talk to the brainwashed older generation anymore. They're set in their ideals, and it would be a shame if our cloth flag were burned. I mean, it's a felony to do such a thing. The meniality of it astounds me. I once got the evil eye because I dropped a flag at Disneyland and placed it back on the shelf rather than disposing of it. It's a cloth representation of our independence. Give it a rest. Just don't try to talk about anything patriotic with your parents. Unless their open-minded liberals, you're gonna be chewed out each and every time. Burning the flag does not make you any less American, and neither does have a brain and questioning the decisions of those human beings we blindly entrust to run the country.

Banning the US flag. Nice.

I find the poll the most hilarious thing of all... more than 80 percent of AOL users apparently believe that it's right to ban the american flag.

Come on people, America is the greatest country in the world, but we're not gods... and it isn't a felony to drop the bible, for that matter.

Though it is wrong to worship a flag as if it were something holy, it is an act of disrespect to burn a flag. Dropping it is silly, since accidents happen, but unless your waving this flag near an open flame, like at a bonfire or something, burning the flag is an act thats done with ideas in mind, not an accident. Its representative of the country that feeds, houses, cleans, and protects those citizens who hold it, and burning it because of some "rebellious cause" is just a cry for attention, figuring the burner is an American citizen. People aren't getting what they want, so they need to do something drastic to get their voice heard. People are offended because desecrating whats representative of all things American for someone elses selfish wants is pretty much like a cheap shot to them.

I stand up everyday in class during the announcement, put my hand over my heart, and keep my mouth shut. I do this in respect for my country, but I believe not saying it respects its values even more by showing that yes, I am American, meaning I have the freedom to say what I want, when I want to, and I don't have to say this silly oath because its "American". Whoever says that really isn't listening to the meaning of the pledge, only reciting empty words. I'm not going to sit during this, since I could at least pay respects to the place that does keep my life stable; I just don't have to say something that loses its meaning over time. I dunno if I'm wording it right, but it all makes sense in my head. I try not to be offensive, and at the same time I try not to be overly patriotic.

Edit: Yeah, if I had a gun to my head, I'd totally burn the shit out of that thing. But the chances of that are pretty unlikely, so I doubt I'll ever feel the need to open the ol Zippo. It's not un-American if you believe that burning it for your own livelihood is necessary, but for any other non-lethal reasons I think it is.

Aha, sorry about that, I sorta just had to jump at the chance to use this as a rant thread. Its one of those things that just sits on the back of your mind, you know? But yeah, back on topic, it really is just thread. As I said, if someone is as animalistic to kill another human over something as petty as a flag, it is the right thing to do as they say. Chances are if there's a gun to my head, I'd pretty much do about anything, and freaking cloth would be worth nothing when compared to mine or someone elses life.

Let's get this straight, I'm a patriot, but I agree. People treat the flag like an godly object. It's the freedom in our country we should value, not a piece of dyed cloth. Grow the hell up, dammit. Love America, not it's symbolations. (Is this even a word? Heh.)

I've been wanting to say that for years. I just know I'm going to formulate political advisaries and enemies over this remark.

Sorry, but this is what I believe. Doesn't make me unpatriotic. I would die protecting this country and it's people.

Yes, even for... *shudders* ...

Hippies.

I'd do what the bastard want me to do with the flag. Then, when he has his head turned, I'll go Sam Fisher on his ass... Okay, I'm not that limber, but I can still bust someone's head open.

I really dislike that. "Greatest country in the world". Give it a rest. =/

Imagine working in an office, and every day the same guy comes in and yells "I'm the greatest fucker in here! I'm the greatest person in the world." It'd probably start to get annoying. Well, the Office is the world, and that loud cocky guy is the U.S.*

Now for burning my flag? Of course I'd burn my country's flag if my life was threatened. Hey, burning some cloth is quite the easy task to do to get away with your life.

No problem-o. It doesn't make me Un-Canadian, though.

...does it?
*Not every U.S citizen, mind you. But that's what the U.S sure likes to comment about. Also, my case isn't quite the same being different Natonality, but it's generally the same deal. =P

Correct me if I am wrong, but isn't burning how they dispose of old flags that are being retired because they are messed up and all that?

All the rules and shit that we have about the flag is ridiculous. Can't fly it at night unless there is a light on it, can't burn it, etc... why? Honestly, why? It's a piece of colored cloth!!!

And as for the "when would that happen?" thing, well if the girl on the news had to read antiamerican stuff or die it's equally plausible that one might be forced to burn the flag or die. I'd do it if my life depended on it. I don't think that even the most "patriotic" person would refeuse.

I dont think burning the flag is that big a deal as long as you are shouting
"Down With AMERICA!" While doing it and if you are not being made to do so.

I'm in complete agreement with Voltron. The symbol only has meaning if the people are aware, and believe in the symbol. And the act of burning a flag is also a symbol if the person burning it means it to be.

And Yes Elara, burning a flag is how old flags, and "Dishonored" flags are disposed of. But that to flag burning is the same as a funeral pier to a can of gas, and a living person. ((I know the flag is not a living thing, but the symbology is close enough))

Back to topic...

First I would wonder how I got into this position. A wacko with a gun to my head pressing a lighter into my hands telling me to burn something... How did I screw up this time?

Well... I would assume that there is no way to get out of this. Either burn it or die, right? Can't strangle the nut ball with it? Because, I would try that.

That, or setting his pants on fire.

Because it is a topic that people may have differing opinions on.

While most people here seem to be quite willing to start the fire. There may be others who won't. I know a number of people who would rather die than burn the flag in disrespect, and dishonor.

And to be honest I don't know whether or not I would.

I more than likely would take the bullet to the head.

But I still think that burning his pants would be best.

Some people are so happy to be a part of this country that to burn a symbol of it which they've embraced would be on the same level as burning a Bible or tearing pages from it, or smearing shit on a figure of Christ.

Sure, you can be of the mind to disregard the meanings when destroying them, but some people just can't divorce what the object may mean from what it simply is.

An example, while I was in Vegas with a few friends, one of the guys was determined to jerk off into the hotel room's Bible. Some people thought it would be funny, but in the end everyone was trying to keep him from doing it. Eventhough none of us were particularly religious and most everyone was doing a lot of drinking, so they were making a special effort to sober up and keep him from getting to the book.

The fact remains that if someone was holding a gun to your head, and demanding you to burn the American ( or any countries ) flag, just because you do it for self preservation, would not make you "Un-american". Your not doing it to insult anyone, and its not meant to be some political view. If anyone knew the reasons of why you did it, I am sure they would not care. Only those extremists would be offended that you chose the desruction of one of the millions of American flags produced over ending your own life.

And well ... those kinds of people ...

I love America and all, but I'd defeinately choose the flag over my life. It's not going to make the country suddenly disappear off the face of the earth if I burn the goddamn thing

This is quite the heated debate. Shall I move it to Deabtes?

The flag had a lot of meaning to it. It's a symbol of your freedom and all that stuff...so...if your life was in danger, burn the sucker!!! You have a freedom and a right to live. If we're going to be talking about the meaning of the flag and things like that...then burning it in that kind of situation...wouldn't that be putting the meaning into action?

And since we're on the subject of patriotism...I'm glad there are people here who respect the flag and all. I'm not one to go preaching about being a patriot, but it's still cool and a very good thing to be. However, being a patriot doesn't mean thinking you're above all else. (Don't pull out technical definitions of being a patriot please...this is something that I think once you have a gist of it, it's meaningless unless you apply it to your own thoughts and opinions rather than act it out as it says on a piece of paper.) I'm patriotic. I appreciate the good things in my country, and not only do I see there's actually faults in my country and bitch about them, I do what I can to change it. One only has a right to bitch about issues if they're trying to do something about it. I also have an extreme amount of respect for other countries. No one is inferior to be just because they're not an American. (No one is inferior to me because we are all human, but that's a different type of discussion)

And last but not least, to close my essay here, I'll end with reiterating the point of this thread. I'm patriotic because I would burn the American flag if it meant putting the freedom and rights is represents into action!
