"We're getting all too accustomed to hard drive makers squeezing more and more data into smaller and smaller spaces, but there's still something really sweet about the news that Seagate's rolling out a new 12GB 1-inch drive called the ST1.3 that's 23% smaller than their current 1-inch drive yet squeezes in 50% more storage capacity. They're aiming these drives squarely at mobile phone makers, so brace yourselves for announcements of a whole bunch of 12GB cellphones in the weeks and months after Seagate starts shipping these things (they're saying it'll be Q3 of this year).

P.S. - Yeah, we know that flash is where it's at for portable devices, but it'll be a while before it's feasible (from a cost perspective) to put 12GB of flash into a cellphone.
"

I just want these drives to power minute little robot warrior MP3 player robots that blast loops of "It's A Small World" and hide in your office/dorm/room so you can't figure out where the song is coming from, then takes pictures of you and stores them.

I don't know.

Holy crap thats tiny...if only that thing can fit in my computer, it would run super uber fast and use like 50% less power...giving me a lesser electric bill or something...( And yes Zabuza I know it wouldent work like that, but hey, I can dream )

It would also be cool if it was installable into like PSPs and such...you can imagine something of that size would be fitted into memory sticks somehow in the meer future...

there was talk from sony about fitting the second gen of psp with on-board harddrives. but if seagate beats ibm to the punch, second gen might just come a bit faster.

I've always had an extreme love/hate relationship with IBM.

As for this hard disk, this could be an interesting turn of events for solid state devices. Could they slowly become the past if these things become even cheaper and smaller? Who knows at this point.

Yeah, but hard drives are still subject to things like magnetic radiation, and while still non-volatile, it may not be a good option for a lot of devices. Still, imagine hard drives in cell phone to store all kinds of crap.

Thing is, I think for some odd reason Hard Drives just will be a big no-no when it comes to cell phones, I dont see the big deal about them really, only if you like talking on the phone or something...I guess its a teen thing, people at my school has one and their always taking pictures with the most shittyest quality I have ever seen, I have a 1/4th inch slim 5.0 Gigabyte camera that has perfect quality...and then some! And it records music, can surf the web, and record music...just I cant talk on it...

I dunno, thats just me

It's 5.0 megapixels, not gigabytes. I don't know, we have a Sony Ericcson S700 and S710 camera phones with 3.0 and 5.0 megapixel qualities. Accomodations for a SONY duo memory stick, full motion video, macro pictures, digital zoom, java games, other junk that we don't test. Just the gaming portion. While removable media may be a better application for smaller devices, it may be the future of smaller MP3 players...smaller than the novelty devices we have now.

If hard drives become as thin and small as they are getting, we may find our entire lives embedded in a slightly thicker ID card with a built-in hard drive.
