The MIT Media Lab has launched a new research initiative to develop a $100 laptop—a technology that could revolutionize how we educate the world's children. To achieve this goal, a new, non-profit association, One Laptop per Child (OLPC), has been created. The initiative was first announced by Nicholas Negroponte, Lab chairman and co-founder, at the World Economic Forum at Davos, Switzerland in January 2005." I actually like this initiative since most schools have begun to implement more computerized education and help to include computer literacy into their programs. By reducing the overall cost per student that a laptop would require, I see our schools becoming more tech savvy. Despite the fact that many schools all over the world already churn out tech savvy kids by the busload each year. It always joyful for the US to try to catch up. |

| That's pretty cool for kids of less fortune to get a nice laptop that doesn't even cost that much and even does the same things at a 1000 dollar laptop, just not being able to store a lot of data. | |||

| Remember that if the shell of the hardware, I.E. the covering of the LCD screen and underside of the keys is exposed seeing from the images on that site then you're going have to be alightly cautious when walking around town and the such. I have a laptop that I carry in my back pack and its suffered from that. The CD/DVD combo has stoped working from setting it down on the table, floor, seat, etc to hard. Back end USB ports are jared loose so now I dont have 2 of the total 3 USB ports.
But then again they, the manufactures of this new item have thought about that. Which of course means repairs are going to be harder to get due to the fact like all new computer technology is so small that its harder to fix by a larger group and thus warnties and the like are going to be more expencive. I just found on eBay a Gateway 5300 Solo and bought it for $100 for my mom and also bought a PCIMA linksys wireless 802.11g card for $30 bucks on eBay. I have a Corp. OEM Ed. of WinXP Pro so I can make as many copies as I need being a computer tech. I had extra RAM and put her RAM up to around 640. So in total I got her a Good system that I can fix and work on, Had Win Office 2003 XP Pro, WinXP Pro, and RAM for $130. Shop around, the deals are there but you have to find them. |

| That is way cool. I agree with what Zabuza said.
One thing I've always hated about schools in my district is they are Macintosh obsessed. I'm all for anything that gradually moves teh education world towards PC's and not apples. |

| Obviously, these computers are designed to stay in a controlled environment such as a classroom, and not meant for student to actually take home. Most laptops that students are given for school use (not to actually keep) never leave the school ground, or only leave on the weekends.
This initiative is for educational purposes only, meaning that most students wouldn't need more RAM nor power. |

| I also agree with Zabuza about this, it is really good that the US has finally started to try catching up to everyone else as far as computer education is going. I just wish that they had done that when I was in grade school... oh well, at least my kids will get it later on.
