We all listen to rock music, one way or another. There will always be one song or at least one riff that defines the meaning of 'rock n' roll' for you. What's your favorite guitar riff/ solos?

1) Crazy Train by Ozzy
Honestly, right after the intro, the riff that kicks in is absolutely one of the most badass things I have ever heard in my life. It is extraordinarily simple to play, having only to do with two strings, three fingers, and a whole lot of distortion. But there's no doubt about it: play this riff and you are automatically cool....well at least for me. But then again, I looked the part as well.

2) Stairway to Heaven Solo by Led Zeppelin (Jimmy Page)
Granted, this song is very very old. However, you cannot deny the beauty and masterpiece that the band created when the song was first created. Sure, the song is simple as hell to play and the solo isn't very complicated...but it sure as hell is an amazing solo, regardless. Now throw in more distortion your used to, don yourself in pure black, have yourself a kick ass drummer by your side, and you got the key to one of the coolest 'remixed' solos ever.

3) Fuel solo by Metallica (Kirk Hammett?)
One of Metallica's lesser known songs and not as popular as Sandman, MoP, and One, one cannot deny the coolness of Fuel's solo. Simple as it may be, when you throw in the right amount of style (the way Kirk did during the SNL performance) as well as the right amount of skill, you got an incredibly slick and cool solo that anyone can get into.

Solos
1. 'Ride The Lightning' Guitar Solo - Metallica (It's great, you can't deny it).

2. 'Everytime I Die' Guitar/Keyboard Solo - Children of Bodom (Great guitar solo to keyboard solo.)

3. 'Dyers Eve' Guitar Solo - Metallica (Great song, and the solo is pretty nice).

Riffs
1. "Lil' Bloodred Ridin' Hood" Chorus Riff - Children of Bodom (abso'fucking'lutely great)

2. "The Glass Prison" - Dream Theater (it's my favorite song by Dream Theater, all the riffs in this song pwn)

3. "Aces High" Faster riff - Iron Maiden (I like it, very much).

Misc
- "The Outlaw Torn" Ending Jam/Solo, because it rocks.

Sparda: Yes, Fuel's solo is played by Kirk. James only playts a few solos (ie. Master of Puppets (solo 1, the real slow one), Nothing Else Matters, a few covers)

1. Unholy Confessions, Avenged Sevenfold (Into/Main Riff)
If you have never listened to this song (I pitty you) I advise you put the volume as loud as you can. Once you hear this riff you are instantly ready to rock. What can I say this simple riff is amazing I advise you any metal fan must listen (Cause this is not Nu Metal... It's NEW METAL). Easy riff then you can rock along (Not as easy ozzy and crazy train cause of the pull off kills). And if you think the first 9 seconds are great wait till it's harmonized. Overall this song will throw you into a mosh pit and kick your ass.

2. Freak Gasoline Fight, It Dies Today (Best use of Tremolo Picking) (Also Post Chorus Riff)
Listen to the opening and once the 10 minute mark and The first scream starts (An awesome scream) The harmonization kicks in and it sounds so freaking awesome harmonized. The first 30 seconds are amazing and after teh long chorus we get the awesome harmonzied high pitched chorus riff jsut amazing contrasting sounds makes your ears wanna bleed (Allways good for us metal fans though )

3. Brain Stew, Greenday (Best Power Chord Progression)
Easy song. Nuff said this one gets you pumped up after only the first chord. Billie Joe Why did you have to put you "Mature Emotions" into your music we liked older pissed off "youth" greenday better.

Those are three I'll Try and remember more later.

Moby - Come On Baby
The shit at the end is incredible. Check it out. Animal Rights is the only CD where Moby ever pulled out all the stops and went heavy metal and got pissed.

so many good ones, it's hard to pick from all the things I've heard.

riffs:
The Glass Prison by Dream Theater

Beyond This Life by Dream Theater

Free Will by Rush

Master of Puppets by Metallica (this song never gets old)

Inferno(Unleash The Fire) by Symphony X

Jerry Was a Racecar Driver by Primus (it's a bassline but that should count)

What Drives the Weak by Shadows Fall

guitar solos from:
The Four Horsemen by Metallica

Glasgow Kiss by John Petrucci

25 or 6 to 4 by Chicago

all of Michael Angelo Batio's songs

Eruption by Van Halen

Bite of The Mosquito by John Petrucci and Jordan Rudess

I will think of more, but this list is probably good enough

I honestly didn't know what riff's really were until recently, so I can only think of a few (yeah, no joke ).

Riff:
Metallica : Master of Puppets, Master of Puppets - Can't deny it.
Megadeth : (not sure what album), Four Horsemen - Their version of the song is insanely fast.
Edguy : Hellfire Club, Mysteria - (especially the opening).

Solo:
Edguy : Mandrake, Golden Dawn - The solo in this song is still easily one of my favorites of all time.

Yeah, I can't really think of much ... I mean, most Power Metal (basically all I listen to) bands have solo-ing in all of their songs, so it's hard to decide, and Thrash is basically where the glorious Riffs are at, like old school Metallica, Megadeth, and so on.

Edit: I'm still not really sure on this, guitar or keyboard? (the part that starts at 0:50)
Whatever it is I love it.

I will continue to always say it, Dragonforce owns.
On topic also, the solo-ing in this song is great, at 6:37, the buildup from 4:25 is great too.

A riff is a part of a song in music is usually played in parts aka riff 1 riff 2 and so on songs have many riffs. Its simply put as a part of the song so idk why you weren't sure on call of ktulu being a riff.

and to contribute

Talk is Cheap, comeback kid (breakdown riff)

If this doesnt motivate you to go kick some ass idk what will

edit: sorry for the shorthand and errors. my migrane kills

I don't really like guitar solo's that much, but there's a few that i love.

Sublime - Seed
Rage Against The Machine - Guerilla Radio: I love how Tom Morrelo made his guitar sound like a harmonica.
Hopesfall - Only the Clouds: there's a solo in there that made me think of clouds before i even knew the name of the song. That solo sounds like if you were to take clouds and turn them into sound.

Stalker by The Pillows- this song is so cool, it's... uber cool.

The opening "riff" of Infected Mushroom's Deeply Disturbed fits in great with the drum and basslines of the electronica that it is.

And... Sasuke's, Van's and my version of Trog-Dor on the guitar was awesome.
