Living near L.A. this video has been played in every news telecast I've watched since the weekend.
Pretty much this UCLA student, Alexandra Wallace, made a video blog post complaining about Asians on campus. Among her arguments are that when she's studying in the library (yeah, you try not to laugh at that one), Asian students are always talking on their cellphones and calling home to Japan regarding the tsunami is not a good excuse. This isn't the original video. I just don't feel like knocking up the view count on her YouTube account any higher. UCLA's chancellor has made a point in commenting back. This video has also spawned several parodies and comments. Among them: EDIT: Apparently she put this video up Friday night, hours after the tsunami earthquake and tsunami hit Japan. Here's one of many news stories on it. (Last edited by Rogue on 03-15-11 01:10 PM) |

Why is this a news story is my question.
Reminds me of when we see Newscasters today using Facebook as a source. Basically it just blows my mind something so stupid would get so much publicity. (Last edited by Spiral King on 03-15-11 01:44 PM) |

Honestly, I really don't know. I guess because so many people have been passing this video around and it's pissed off a lot of Asians.
I suppose people are just so shocked that a UCLA student could say such things. UCLA is held up on a pedestal around here. And I completely know what you're talking about regarding the internet making the news. Mind you, I come from L.A., where they dedicate 10 minutes of news time talking about the "Internet hate machine" ANONYMOUS. OMG, they're destroying people's MySpace profiles!!! The other thing that kills me about our local media is how they're trying to do more stand-ups with reporters referring to the iPads. Like they hold it up to show you pictures they looked up on it. SERIOUSLY. The one most guilty of this has been Fox, which was also the one that spent more time talking about 4chan. |

What amazes me is that people still get pissed off that retarded shit like this gets publicity.
The general public is retarded, and I don't mean in that "Kinda stupid, and/or mentally handicapped way". Retarded as in people are just fucking retarded. The general public craves to hear anti-anything propaganda, loves bad news, and if someone is in pain over something, they are listening. So my question is, why are YOU surprised that a blatant racist valley girl, who magically got into a respected college (probably by blowing a few people. Just listen to her way of talking and tell me otherwise) said a few racists remarks on YOUTUBE (where millions spend millions of hours wasting time on dancing kittens) and she was given media coverage because some dingbat reporter had no better source of news. Case: Closed >.> |

Realized my comment above might have been rude, but it looks like you saw where I was going Rogue.
Yeah, it's just hilarious the News has nothing better to cover than hilarious stuff like this and 4chan. Just, wow. |

I agree with Kaijin 100% on this one.
And to be honest? It wasn't that racist. It was insensitive and somewhat bigoted, yes, but hardly worth the time of the media. The only reason it's even getting the attention that it is is because of the recent events in Japan, any other day it would be swept under the rug. Selfish and insensitive in my opinion, not racist. Well, the "CHING CHONG" comment DID make my jaw drop... but we wouldn't have that comedy gold that came after it in the next guy's video if she hadn't said that! XD |

Violation of the school's code of conduct?
HA! There is a plus side of this however. Don't get me wrong, I agree with the sentiments already expressed here. That's why I'm not going to repeat them. There's going to be stupid people out there. Always. What impresses me is the "It's all over blown. I hope nothing happens to her, but she was dumb for posting it on youtube." I like seeing people take note of stupid shit like this (because stupid shit is like a child. Ignoring it all together will only make it mad and it'll get more and more rambunctious. And unfortunately, there are laws that protect it from just being silenced.) and not let it get to them and carry on. There are much more important things out there, and I'm privileged to see such situations in which other people obviously see that too. |

I think it was insensitive and incredibly stupid... but it should not be news, at least not major news. Maybe a mention after the head of the school replied talking about the back and forth... but things like this should not be major stories.
It is really sad that the media is using sources like Facebook, YouTube, 4Chan, Wikipedia and Twitter for their news broadcasts. What happened to actual investigative journalism? What happened to people wanting to get a story good enough to earn them an award? This is not Pulitzer (or whatever the broadcast equivalent is) material! |

Though Katana does have a point... ignoring stupid doesn't fix it. |

So I spent last night at a meeting with the Media Action Network for Asian Americans and this came up on the agenda. There were some people there who were outright pissed off and upset about the video and were wanting MANAA to speak up about it.
The problem with racist comments directed toward Asians is that people expect that nothing would be done about it because Asians "tend" to be passive and not speak up, and thus people tend to think it's OK to say these rather hurtful things and publicize them. This video has become an issue now due to how overblown the media has made this. MANAA's pretty much going to issue a statement saying that while what she's been saying is wrong, no one (ESPECIALLY Asians and Asian American) should threaten or harm her. |

Somebody took all the negativity and turned it into something positive.
This guy created this great song and is donating all of the proceeds to help Japan. Here's the iTune page for it: http://itunes.apple.com/us/album/ching-chong-it-means-i-love-you/id426766910?i=426766932 |
