So I finally got to watch the first episode (don't have cable, had to torrent it).

Other than the fact that they add more conversations and side stories (they probably covered the first 20 pages of the graphic novel in this episode), it's VERY close to the book in terms of the shot-by-shots.

I'm really looking forward to next week's episode.

Thoughts?

I saw a longer trailer of it recently and was pretty blown away at how high quality it looked for a TV series, but with some big names behind it I guess I'm not surprised.

Definitely need to check it out myself.

I've only read the first graphic novel (though I own the second and third, as well).

I love Robert Kirkman's other work: Invincible, Battle Pope, etc. It's hilarious, really. At Comic-Con, whenever I'd go up to Image's booth to see Robert, it was easy, because people just treated him like we was just a guy working the booth. Over the years, more and more people started coming to see him, and these days, it's like a 2-hour wait line for him. This year a quarter of their booth was dedicated just to "Walking Dead" with a massive poster advertising the TV show. His fame has really come along seemingly over night.

I'm definitely digging the show. And a lot of the other comic companies are excited because this really helps everyone else out. IDW was saying at Long Beach Comic Con this past weekend that they're looking forward to it since they're coming out with their own "Infestation" event where they're going to have the Ghostbusters, G.I. Joe, Star Trek, and Transformers characters fighting zombies. I guess they figure this will boost their sales.

I haven't read the graphic novels, but a lot of my friends have, and they pretty much love how relatively true to it the show is so far, with a few of the embellishments, which personally, I don't think embellishments are necessarily bad. I have yet to finish watching the episode.

When I watched it with FX we stopped at the hour mark, for whatever reason, and we haven't gotten around to finishing it yet. I loved it so far. I definitely need to check out the graphic novel though. And quick.

One can only hope this does really well. I am just so dreadfully tired of most of the sit-coms, modern-day cop or ER shows, (probably don't even need to mention reality TV), etc. Bring back some fiction/fantasy/sci-fi please.

Hear hear! I miss the sci-fi/fantasy adventure shows. I used to spend my Saturdays watching Hercules, Xena, Adventures of Sinbad, Lost World, Brisco County Junior, Star Trek: Voyager, and so many others I don't remember off the top of my head. Where are shows like those anymore?

They're not being made because Hollywood considers them poor investments. Shows like Firefly and what not get cancelled because they're really expensive to produce and it can take a while for the money to roll in. Reality shows don't have to pay writers, set makers, or any of the film-like expenses. Cop shows and sitcoms normally recycle sets, so that's a lot easier to replicate, too.

It's a fucking shame that creativity comes second to profits when it comes to television and movies. If those art forms weren't so expensive to produce, the things we'd see would blow our minds.

So we're up to episode 3. I'm intrigued. It seems like they're going really slow and yet jumping forward at the same time. It feels like they're only a third of the way through the first graphic novel, Days Gone Bye.

I got through the first two episodes myself recently, incredible stuff.

I agree about the pacing though, isn't it only supposed to be 6 episodes or something?

They're only doing 6 episodes this season, next season gets 13 or something?

As far as pacing goes, FX tells me it is rather slow, and he has no clue how they're going to get through the series at the rate they're going, what with adding plotlines and such. So, I don't know...

That's called getting people hooked

This was playing at the bar at Olive Garden this past week and while I was hosting it up I watched the first episode.

It's alright. I'm not a big fan of zombie stuff. But I will admit it was pretty good.

Yeah, it feels like they added more characters and conversations than were in the books.

I think the sideplot with the redneck brothers is going to play into a future story regarding Rick. Then again I haven't read as far as that unfortunate spoiler that Scott Lobdell put out there during a comedy show where he did an impersonation of Rick.

Sorry to be ambiguous there. Let's just say someone spoiled something crucial in the story for me, but I don't want to spoil it for you guys.

I'm with Bit here, outside of Shaun of the Dead (which probably doesn't count, haha) I'm not the biggest zombie fan, but so far this has been great. Just watched the third episode earlier tonight.

Pacing is definitely slow, but it's cool they're doing more seasons though. Hope it does well.

Saw episode 4 while out in Arizona. I'm intrigued by the direction they're going, but they did get back on track with the books at the end of the episode.

The Dixon Brothers (as far as I know) aren't in the books, but Amy and Andrea are.

One episode left and they've taken the story in a completely new direction. I'm not sure what to think of it. I mean, it's only a 6-episode season and all, but I'm already wondering if the show has jumped the zombie shark.

I started reading Best Week Ever's Walking Dead recaps, and they kept restating exactly what I was thinking with different episodes. I mean, the books (what I've read so far) were pretty good, and the show is feeling a bit superficial.

Like you guys, I'm not really into zombies either. Zombie apocalypses seem so ridiculous to me, and I'm sick of going to convention panels where someone defaults on asking, "What's your zombie plan?" as though it's this deep question that only this celebrity who does nothing associated with zombies can answer.

That kind of sucks to hear.

I still need to see episode 4-5 myself.

Well, I'm pessimistic by nature. I could just be in the minority and you might love those episodes.

EDIT: Episode 4 wasn't horrible. Episode 5 was just sort of... eh.

Season 1 is over!

I really liked the whole season, but as a reader of the comics, I think they missed a lot of golden opportunities. Here's to hoping the "fire all of the writers and free-lance" it thing works for the next season!

My thoughts exactly.

Spoiler:
With how slow they were going for a while, I was kinda surprised that Shane didn't die in this last episode.

Only 6 episodes and it's nominated for Best Drama by the Golden Globes?

House seriously deserves that spot, especially for that amazing season finale last May.
