Well, time for my review. Notice, I don't warn for spoilers, but there's not really anything to spoil anyways, not like there's plot twists or anything. Anyways!
I HAVE NEVER WANTED A MOVIE TO END SO BAD. That's the end of the all caps sentences, don't worry. First thing that is, in my opinion, most important. This movie was an experimental film. It was a monster movie on the outside, but at it's core it was an experimental film. The experiment: if a movie can be told entirely from a single perspective (Note: not just from the perspective of a camera, but from any single perspective. Camera is just easiest for obvious reasons). The result: near complete failure. A movie cannot be told entirely from that perspective. It just doesn't work. Now, there are some distinct advantages. For example, it makes the audience have a direct connection with the characters, bypassing all that messy character development. But if you do it too long, the audience stops caring. It skips character development, at first. We care about them right away, but character development is necessary to create a bond taht will last throughout the entire movie and beyond. It also works to heighten drama and tension. But it can be overdone. This movie should have been 15 minutes long, if not less. Any movie where the viewer is more concerned about whether or not they are going to vomit than whether or not the characters survive is not working correctly. That's all I will talk about on film technique. The movie was a gimmick. It was a shitty monster movie, with an interesting concept. Oh, and stupid characters, don't forget that. They're with the military, while an epic battle with a prehistoric monster out there, and they're ranting about ONE person out there that MAY be dying, standing in a military ward with at least 30 people dying, and everyone else trying to save the WORLD from the previously mentioned prehistoric MONSTER! What do they expect them to do? "What's that you say? Someone out there may be dying? Well, why didn't you say something sooner? We'll make it our top priority." Fucking morons. And the movie kept feeling like it was going to end. First, the helicopter crashes and they sit there for, like a minute, while I'm sitting there hoping the screen will fade to black. Then the guy gets eaten, and I'm sitting there hoping the other two will run away or get eaten as well, and the screen will fade to black. Then, something else happens, I don't even remember what, and I think something happened before the helicopter. What the fuck! Even the credits were painful. I've never had that happen before. And what were with the random, unexplained jumps forward in time? I mean, some are obviously shutting the camera off for a while, and a few are obviously glitches/damaged portions of the footage. But what's with it cutting out five times in the middle of a guy's sentence? Obviously it's not being turned on and off repeatedly, and there's no signs of glitched tape or anything like that. On that subject, how the fuck are we to expect that SEVEN HOURS PASSED. The movie was practically real time. It was definitely real time once the attack started. So what. the. fuck. And why did the little date/time at the bottom disappear? And why did it say that is was an SD at the beginning, but all the people in the movie kept referring to it as a tape? Hmm? HMM? Phew. Feels good to rant. |

They're releasing the toy in the near future.
Gothamist has the scoop (and pics): http://gothamist.com/2008/02/19/the_cloverfield.php I didn't remember the monster being that... skinny. Or pasty. Yeah. Often when the toys are released, they give away more than the movie producers intended (Grendel's mother's true form was revealed in the Beowulf toy line, etc), but I don't really see this giving much away. |

Even so...now, I still have yet to see this entire movie, but, the bits and pieces that I have seen...I've seen something I'm assuming is close to the end, since the monster's face beats down into the camera (sorry those who have not seen it, but c'mon people, you GOTTA see the sonuvabitch SOMEtime!) even though it's slightly blurry, it's still decent...and, maybe I'm alone here, but I actually find this monster to be pretty terrifying.
Edit: An aside--I do still feel this is something Hollywood needed. So far, I'd say it's 50/50 between those who absolutely LOVED the film, and those that absolutely HATED the film. Even if people hate it, there's still hype. People are angry and the angst for something glamorous out of Hollywood seems a little stronger these days (especially with the highly anticipated release of the next Indiana Jones film) (Last edited by Katana on 02-20-08 02:43 AM) |

I honestly didn't think this was terrible. It was a little nauseating. I read that JJ Abrams wanted to make this another Godzilla, but couldn't get the rights. It wasn't terrible, but maybe a little predictable and unrealistic at points. |
