I'm looking to get a new lap top....since, sadly, my trusty old girl is getting old (shh, dont tell her I said this).

Basically, it would be mostly for school, being on the internet (when am I ever not) and then also, I'd like to be able to game (since this one doesnt like games....come on, she's almost 4 years old).

I looked into all different types, and yada yada yada....and of course, no one I asked could help much.

My question is then, between these lap tops, which would be the best...overall:

Dell
Hp
Alienware

And I would put Apple up there....but I'm strictly a PC girl....so no offense to the Macs out there, I just know PC's better.

Hmmm...

Alienware, IMO just costs too much for stuff you could get at a lesser price.

Dell, I don't own one of their computers, but my friend has one and it's mostly crap (they use their own hardware, which Windows doesn't recognize by default... joy.)

HP, my mother (and I think my step-dad) own HP Laptops, and I haven't had any problems with them.

Any respectable technologically aware person knows not to use Alienware, they're overpriced.

I'd recommend Dell, if you're getting a prebuilt computer.

HP, I don't think they have the greatest reputation with computers anymore... I know to avoid their printers.

Tell me what you are going to use it for and I can get you a pretty good price on one.

Edit- But with the subject.

Alienware Laptops are a joke, so are Dell's.

HP computers are, meh, they are somewhat good, but I would never rely on one.

Never get a Sony Vaio. Never

I can't believe I'm going to say this, but... If you want a laptop to play games on, I recommend you get a compaq/HP with as close to the same specs as you'd want in a desktop gaming machine. Be warned, however, that HP machines have a tendency to start flipping out as they get older, and you won't be under warranty once it starts happening. I've had 2 compaq laptops, both were throwaways from my dad's office. Both lasted about 2 years, and one started dying rapidly after that was up. I sold the other, but it was so ancient it barely ran WIN98. It's hit-and-miss.

And you could always bootcamp a mac to run windows. Or use Vista, I think microsoft's got vista for macs now. Macs are amazing pieces of machinery, with great customer service plans and highly stable, but lack gaming power without a windows install.

Yeah, I definately need a laptop that will let me play games!!! Also, I'm not sure what the best processor/memory/hard drive is to get for a laptop, and obviously a good video card is needed....right? That's where Im lost...(wish I knew the internals of computers better).

I think my mom is going to make me get a dell...*sigh* so, if that is my fate...what is most important....hard drive/processor/etc....?

Not sure I've heard of that processor...what is the difference between AMD Athlon dual core and Intel Dual Core processors?

This is what dell is offering::

Processor: AMD Turion™ 64 X2 Mobile Technology TL-64 (1MB/2.2GHz)

Memory: 2GB Shared Dual Channel DDR2 at 667MHz

Video Card: ATI RADEON® Xpress1270 HyperMemory

Hard Drive: Speed: 160GB SATA Hard Drive (7200RPM)

[[[[OR]]]]

Processor: Intel® Core™ 2 Duo T7500 (2.2GHz/800Mhz FSB/4MB cache)

Video Card:256MB NVIDIA® GeForce® 8600M GT

Memory: 3GB Shared Dual Channel DDR2 at 667MHz

Hard Drive: Speed: 160GB SATA Hard Drive (7200RPM)

---So which of these two would be best?---

Well, It depends on what you are going to use it for. School? Go for the Intel Dual Core.

For gaming, go with the first Choice. (In fact...I never heard of an Xpress memory, time for research)

Ok, if I get one for gaming, obviously I can still use it for school....but mainly, I'm online and stuff, its not like I do hard core papers and research (yet)...I just want a comp that will let me play games and not shut down when I try to play one (like my comp right now does)...

If there's no error, this could be due to overheating (my computer does that, running at around 70 degrees celcius)

No, I bought a lap top cooler...but when it does that with games, it freezes first, and I cant get it to respond and if I dont turn it of manually with the button, it does it itself...shes an oldie ^^

Sorry Nagis, but NO!

STFU...

AMD is to far behind in the processor game...

the most efficient and powerful Processors at the moment are the Intel Core 2 Duos..pick one up at like 2 ghz and your set for gaming

makes sure you get atleast a gig, and if your running vista 2 gigs of RAM(fucking vista)

Graphics, anothing around a 7900go and your set..

harddrives for laptops are usualy around 80 gigs...if you have the option to go bigger make sure the speed is still 7200 rpms

Zabulon, Im perfectly sure shes not looking for the girth of a 4,000$ Laptop.

AMD has been used for the past 6 (I think, maybe its 4 / around there) years for major companies and most gaming designers.

Oh yeah, and there are Dual Core Athalon Processors out there.

Stop, listening to Nagis

Sorry dude but you REALLY dont know what the hell your talkin about.

Do a bit of Research, first of all, Processors are cheapest they have been for years, and a good Core 2 duo blows away any processer that AMD makes, I used to be an AMD fanboy to till they dropped the ball

and if you were so up to date you would note that all of the better gaming rigs were built with Core 2 duos...I seem to remember Mac Using them..and if its in a MAC it has been tried and tested as reliable and the best (much as I hate macs I respect how they do things)

Also this one is the best one

Edit, you know what. Im not putting up with your shit.

Go ahead and do what you feel is right, Darkbeloved. Whatever suits your pocket, thats all that matters.

And Zabulon, you approached this the WRONG way. Im not going to argue to someone who comes in, guns blazing, telling everyone that they should ignore me. You are walking on eggshells my friend.

For the record, the reason why Intel is the prime part in Gaming comps, is because they are, -right now-, ahead in the game. Athalon is not far behind, as you will see coming October.

But the fact that AMD processors are coming out in october doesnt change the fact that currenly Intels Cores are the best at the moment...

Pardon the abrasive manner in which I came off but lately I hear so much ...not completely informed people speaking about PCs and Laptops and its annoying to me..

And the performance of the new cores has yet to be seen yet, I will reserved my judgement on them until they are released and I see some hard data, Personally I'd go with the intel box.

And Nagis sorry for the rudeness but Tech stuff is a sensitive subject
