I know very little about this subject so bear with me.
Is there any way that I can connect two computers together in order to utilize both their processors at the same time? Both are Windows. One is Windows 2000 the other is Windows 98. |

As far as I know you cant, mainly because you may have two different motherboards, and if the processors will combine into two with your two mother boards, really that will slow you down.
Least I think, lemmie ask Goat. |

Yes, it would basically be like putting two CPU's in one computer (maybe not CPU's, I'm bad with terminology).

I thought that parallel processing made a computer faster because it split the task between the two CPU's.

(*Soul_Of_Steel puts on "Computer Science Major" hat)
We seem to be getting confused on subjects here. Parallel processing does split tasks between two CPUs, but those CPUs have to be in a single motherboard designed to support multiple CPUs and divide the load between them. In general, this allows a system to do multiple tasks with relative ease, since one processor can handle the OS and background services while the other handles your application/game/whatever. Memory sharing tends to be an issue in these systems, but I digress. What NucklearKnight seems to be asking about is distributed computing, where two systems are connected by a network and share their work that way. Another term for this sort of setup is a Beowulf Cluster. These are better for computations and research simulation, since the network connection is MUCH slower than the internal busses, and are really only for fun and 'wow factor,' not the average home user. I couldn't tell you how to set one up, but I'm sure google can help with that. I'll point out that having different a different OS on each machine will probably prevent you from making a cluster, but I'm not positive. So, short answer: yes, but it won't get you much of a boost in power. |
