Metal. Greatest element of life. I'm getting into so many new bands almost on a daily basis. Heck, I'm even writing reviews now. Keep an eye on my collection too! If you like some of the stuff I talk about, or post about, chances are you'd dig a lot of stuff I own.
Favorite Genre's
#1. Speed - Although a very broad and horribly broken term, I'll just say I like a lot of the faster, heavier stuff that has balls. A lot of my speed love goes out to a lot of late 80's stuff, Agent Steel's "Unstoppable Force", Scanner's "Hypertrace" and "Terminal Earth", Riots "Thundersteel", Vicious Rumors "Digital Dictator", Helstar's albums, Helloween's Keeper albums, etc, all of these are examples.
#2. Power - Though, this genre myself is something I'd call somewhat broken these days too. So many bands can fall under its category, it gets a little silly. I prefer the more technical flavors of Speed, because it seems to be more diverse and whatnot, while as a lot of Power out there seems mildly repetitive, sometimes "too happy", and stuff like that. But there's practically always technical skill in Power Metal bands, which is what I love. Gamma Ray (I use them as a light example, since I can see them as traditional too), Iron Savior, Lost Horizon, Nocturnal Rites, Hibria, Scanner, Running Wild, are good examples. As you can see, Speed and Power go hand in hand and are like bread and butter. But there's definitely two sides to the fence.
#3. The rest - Progressive Metal, such as Dream Theater and Pagan's Mind goes here. Then, traditional stuff going all the way out to Journey and bands like them. I dig the roots.
-- Basically, I love Heavy Metal. Hard Rock ... and stuff like that, not so much. Not a fan of bands that sell themselves out too. Probably a reason why I've never taken much of a liking to Metallica, and so forth. I enjoy technical skill and virtuosity within Metal. I'm not a fan of thick substance, aka Nu-Metal, Emo stuff, and basically a lot of mainstream stuff. I can't stand it. I live in the underground.
Vocalists. Some I think are worth mentioning. Eric Adams (Manowar), Bruce Dickinson (Iron Maiden), James Rivera (Helstar, Vicious Rumors, and tons of other stuff), Michael Kiske (early Helloween), John Cyriis (early Agent Steel, best shrieker out there), Tobias Sammet (Edguy, Avantasia), Carl Albert (Vicious Rumors, RIP), Harry "The Tyrant" Conklin (Jag Panzer), Urban Breed (Tad Morose). Probably more, but these come to my mind fairly quickly.
Top Favorites (keep in mind I'm discovering new bands constantly, so this could change easily) In no particular order:
- Gamma Ray (so solid, I can't say much more than that. And Kai's a god).
- Scanner (the bible of Power Metal)
- Running Wild (catchiest band ever)
- Vicious Rumors (you can't define their style, go ahead and try).
- Helstar (technical awesomeness)
- Iron Maiden (why not?)
- Agent Steel (speed metal kings, modern marvels)
- Heathen (Speed/Thrash hybrid metal band. Melodic Thrash at its finest).
- Laaz Rockit (in-your-face Thrash that's catchy and aweseome)
Now, I love so many bands its not even funny. Some bands I love might have a single album that blows anothers entire discography out of the water. But, looking at their overall careers, the above are bands I could probably place on a pedestal). Also, keep in mind I could be forgetting some bands, and some may need to be added to that list. ^_~
And, if you haven't figured it out yet ... Metal-Archives is your best place for all your Metal needs!
So, Metal rocks.
