Yeah yeah yeah, I know it is only a faint glimmer on the horizon, but we must take note now!

Arenanet is releasing on last major expansion (the FIRST sequel) to the original Guild Wars Prophecies campaign that is suppose to tell what happened betweens the original Guild Wars and Guild Wars 2: Eye of the North. Adding a huge amount of level 20 content instead of a whole new campaign with new classes, this is the first in the Guild Wars line to break from this pattern.

Eye of the North will feature a very new concept to the GW franchise: Dungeons. These differe from missions in such a way that they are far harder and much more rewarding, as this entire expansion is built on getting people ready for the 100 year time warp into the future with Guild Wars 2. And on a much cooler note, no more will you be stuck to playing as just a human, 3 new races are joining the fray and those who purchase the last expansion will get the first look at these new playable races (I am banking that Tengu will be one of them). The story so far is that after the events of Factions and Nightfall, Tyria is faced with a unknown enemy. It is known that this unknown power is creating giant underground complexes (aka the dungeons) and gearing their power to destroy what is left of Tyria. It is hinted that this evil will be the Charr, as they had more then enough power to bring a entire continent to ruins in a few months, and destroyed all of Ascalon with their great and terrible magic.Time will tell if it is really the Charr who are the enemy once more, of it they are just puppets for a greater evil.

Okay, enough of the doomsday talk and prepare to get sent several hundered years into the future by way of a black screen saying :"Several Hundered Years Later" (free cookies to whoever got that reference XD). Guild Wars 2 is slated for release in 2009 or 2010, with a open beta coming out early next year. It has been said that this time around, there will be no level restrictions. NO LEVEL RESTRICTIONS! Either this game is going to be f***ing huge or they will screw things up with this choice. I dont mind it as long as they maintain the same level of exp gain and not make it a horrible grind to gain levels as it is in other mmo's.

Next key point, the whole instance thing is being scaled back with promises of giant warfare across entire zones. No more will there be zoning in and out of cities, which might be kinda odd. I did like the fact you could play by yourself without "OMFGBBQNUGGETS CHUCK NORRIS PWN YOU" every three seconds. The creators of GW said that they wanted to open the game up, to allow you to swim, jump, run, etc while making all of these features really important to the game and not just some gimmick.

The last point is the idea of 4 new playable races besides humans. Knowing Arenanet, there will be no unbalance issues for what they can bring to the game. Hopefully they wont be reskins of the human characters and have nothing new to add, and for god sakes, they better not make these new races hate eachother and split them like in WoW. GW is about team work and friendly pvp in the arena, not about people ganking just becuase your not on their side.

What will the future hold for these two games? Are they destined for greatness, or will Guild Wars 2 fall under its wealth of new game ideas? Time will tell.

Discuss.
