Anyways, because I love Schmups, and don't want this thread to die... I'd like to comment on a game called "Samidare" Since you're all a bunch of little boys, and are afraid of girls, this should work well.

Heavilly Touhou inspired, yes, this game is Bullet Hell! I strongly suggest getting this. Vertical Shooters beat Sidescrolling Shooters every time, I say, and this is just yet another example.

Featuring a beautiful shield system for absorbing shots (while not as interesting as Ikaruga's) this game is incredible! Take a look.

The Makers of Guitar hero also made ITG... ... It's like the only thing they do is Ripoff Konami... (Guitar Freaks, DDR anyone?)

And I can't stand guitar hero, because I've played guitar freaks... Get this! There are OTHER GENRES OF MUSIC BESIDES ROCK!

Funny, because Guitar Hero is the only rythm game I've liked.

I guess probably because I absolutely suck at most of them.

Those are exercise games aimed to get those chunky kids off the couch and out to burn the fat.

Also good to get people laughing at you (I won't step foot on one of those, I'd rather play an intense game of Galaga).

Your just jealous cause I enjoy games where I collect fat and loose it on PIU (and Para para paradice etc etc etc...)

I mean seriously...the only rythm game I dont like is Guitar Hero...The creators made Frequency and Amplitude...But I loathed Guitar hero

Well you can go ahead and be chunky on the couch then...

Personally I think that chubby kids look funnier than the skinny asian that AAA's a level 13 song on ITG, but ok.

Rhythm Avoid game?

I disagree. I'm going to have to go with Rhythm games, on the subject of Reflex building...

Yeah I've read that article when it was posted at Shmups boards, they too agree with the guy. Shmups are really good for building reflexes and hand/eye coordination, probably more than any other genre.

Fun article.

Real men play Gradius.

He just talks about the greatness that is shmups.

I've learned how to use the D-Pad on the PSP effectively for Gradius Collection enough to get far enough in and do better on Gradius 2 than any other incarnation.

Thank goodness to the forefathers of shmups Gradius, R-Type, and for verts, Xevious.

try using a piece of cloth over your thumb and on the dpad. that should help you out.

Bah, I just really can't stand the PSP's d-pad for shumps. I bought the Gradius collection, but the controls just really didn't feel right at all.

Indeed the green goo stage is a tough one, I hate it mainly for one reason, so claustrophobic (and I'm actually not), once had a bug i that stage where you shoot the little round hub and the gap in one spot reopens for you to continue on. Needless to say I shot the hub, but lo and behold the walls didn't move again costing me a precious life.

I'm also a fan of mostly 2-D anything, including shmups, hence why I started working on Toaplan Genesis games, they are amsuingly hard, quite fun, and will have you swearing a lot.

Also in Japan on the 25th (tomorrow) the PSP will finally see the release of Salamander, Parodius, and Twinbee Portables, will these make it to the U.S. or UK, we'll have to wait and see.

Go for those higher loops, after awhile the amount of suicide bullets from dead enemies will overwhelm you.

indeed. high loop gradius v makes it seem like enemies are shooting lasers at you instead of bullets, just because of how many there are.
and man... suicide bullets... there's just so damn many.

True, I need to go back and beat it.

I remember getting to some level that had some liquid green stuff I think, kind of reminded me of the last level of Gradius III. It was one of those levels where the whole level is enclosing on you I guess, making it pretty hard.

I dunno, I probably would've beaten it by now, but the 3D shmups never really pulled me in as much as the older ones. I played Gradius III, Thunder Force III / IV, old R-Types, religiously until I beat them. But I didn't really do that with R-Type Final and Gradius V. I don't know.

I need to go back and finish what I started though.

I'd get really far, but yeah I've never completely beaten it.

very suprising to hear of someone picking it up but never finishing it. definitely finish it some time. it's a great shmup, and brings a classic to the new generation.
unfortunately, it seems the new generation didn't receive it too well.

wow. my gradius 3 snes boss rush video got posted. keep in mind that's loop 1... where the game is easy for the newcomers to shmups to get into it. later on, enemies will start hurling bullets in a fashion that is actually easy to pick up on, yet still difficult to play.

but if you want bullet patterns, gradius is not for you. gradius is more of a skill based game, relying on your reactions and thinking in order to manipulate your options into destroying your enemies. personally, i find myself being a big fan of gradius, as well as most of the shmups mentioned by bloodreign, such as twin cobra, fire shark. other ones i like are also thundercross, traysia, and even rocket knight adventures, if you can count it as a shmup(in some parts it is at least, but overall it's a great game). i'm not so much a fan of manic shmups, although i do think i need to get a little practice so i can start dominating high loop gradius. gradius v loop 5 is just too tough for me, and that's not even the maximum bullets!

edit in response to lord shaddow: that stage was probably removed just because of hardware restrictions. the snes probably just couldn't be able to handle a level like that, or maybe the programmers found it unnecessary to code a completely new engine for one level. i'd certainly agree with that.. i don't think it was a difficulty thing, as that level was pretty easy... but it just feels out of place. it probably did work as inspiration for solar assault gradius, however.

It didn't feel like a necessary stage in the arcade version, it felt out of place, it stuck out like a sore thumb. Konami probably felt this way and axed it.
