the first two are horrible, because obviously, they're kids and is mala en se (Evil in itself." Behavior universally regarded as criminal, e.g., murder.).

however, the later, 12-17 is different in my opinion. the age of consent is mala prohibita (Behavior that is criminal only because society defines it as such, e.g., gambling), which means, it's a law, which happens to be different from state to state, and country to country.

point being, we've all had history class, and from what you might remember, ppl have married girls as young as 12, and they didnt have a problem with it back in the old days, even with arranged marriages.

for example CURRENTLY just to name a few known countries japan 13, france 15, italy 14, spain 13. most other known countries are 16. Yemen, a middle eastern country, has its age of marriage for girls as young as 9 yrs old.

to say that people who like girls or boys from the age of 12-17 are pedos isnt fair i think...

So over a tiny bound from 11 to 12, ULTIMATE EVIL OHNOES becomes IT'S ONLY A LAW AFTER ALL. Amazing, I say.

I can see your point on that one, but...its still really difficult too. I mean, yeah, some people get way out of hand when it comes to freaking out about certain issues...but...its still difficult. I mean, I know you said that the age varies from different places...in a way, I guess that's something totally different. I mean, its the way their society is and how they grow up.

In my state, the legal age is 18, with two years consent. Something people here are used to. My oldest niece, who is 13 years old, born and raised in this state (hell, same block) is not mentally ready to handle a relationship like that. Whereas, one of the countries you mentioned, Japan, at 13, had she been born in that society, it would be different. Her outlook and the way she was raised will be different.

Point is, while the 12-17 age group is mentioned...I think whether it is considered pedophelia relies on the culture as well. Just simply because to a certain extent, one reason why I am so strongly against pedophelia is because of the whole "mental readiness."(If that could even be considered a phrase.) With the way at least my local society is, at 13, 14 years old, I don't think children should have a sexual relationship to worry about. Growing up is hard enough as it is and there is plenty of time for "adult relationships" later.

Again, I do not really have many facts to support how I feel here, so I am not claiming to be all-knowing. All I have to go by is how close I am to my nieces and nephews. While I am not a mother myself, I love them so much and its just hard when I think of this stuff and the kids are all within that age range and...well, I'm sure you all get the point. So yeah. Don't shoot me. >.o Just share your opinions and/or inform me here.

A bit of information of Wikipedia (Yes, I know Wikipedia is fatally flawed, but this still gets the message across): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nambla

On the main subject, that is, the difference between this and being gay...I don't see much difference honestly. I see them both as immoral, and the only difference is in terms of ranking.

You see, a child doesn't have the maturity to make a choice in the matter. Two gay people it's all optional on either side, and a restraining order will save you from a gay person. However, a child will not be saved nearly as easily from a sex offender, and will go through extreme psychological damage, and many more things. No child should have to go through that.

As for my opinion on sex offenders in general, I think that if someone rapes or sexually abuses a child, castrate him! Don't look at me like that, I'm serious! It would empty out a lot of jails, and losing such things is probably a lot more humbling than simply spendign a couple years in jail. I can guarentee that it would cut down offenders, and save us room in our overfilled jails.

Also, in the amish shooting, the media is a serious problem. The police tried to get in helicopters, and the new helicopters wouldn't get out of the way. The same thing was happening on the ground.

Part of what I'm trying to say is that if the worst thing happening in the nation is the actions of a lone criminal, then there's not much wrong. It's not as though it's common, like the massive poverty rates.

And Katana, I have a question for you, did you know about the incident, or just heard it from the news? From what you've said, they've made the situation into a spectacle, haven't they? (Sorry, I stopped watching television a long time ago, not enough substance.)

I heard about it first on the news, but I have talked with people I know up there. None of them are from that exact area in which it happened, but they're the next closest thing to being there. It's just horrible...

As far as this topic in general is concerned though...I can't even debate about it. It's hard bringing myself to be intellectual enough on the topic. I have my opinions, but I can't really support them.

Though I do agree with Elara on the fact that the media, as well as courts, and other people, have a habit of making things seem worse than they are. So yeah...but otherwise...hurting a child is the worst thing in the world to do. I'm not a mother, but long story short, I'm pretty damned close to my nieces and nephews. I love them so much. So I kinda know what its like to worry about those things to a small extent.

Logos: Amish School Shooting. That is pretty much what that is all about.

I don't think that they will ever have sensitivity classes for it, mainly since it is against the law and shall never EVER be legalized. However, I don't think that a registered sex offender should be harrassed and forced to move out a new home by a bunch of people unless it is obvious that they are not recovered from their problem (i.e. warning signs of them about to do it again)... I've seen people go apeshit about a sex offender moving in without knowing what they did. It could have been a poor guy caught pissing in public and they decend upon him like he raped a baby.

The adult should know better, I know that some have serious mental problems and to some point they should seek help, but in no way should they have rights, they need to feel ashamed of the act they committed on an innocent child and they should go to jail for life.

There was an uproar in my neighbourhood a few months ago about a paedophile moving into the area, it wasn't anywhere near a school or child centre, but a lot of parents rallied up to get him out, but the state government couldn't do anything because he was deported from another state .. then it starts to get into the legal and political lingo, but basically they couldn’t get him to move because he was in his right to stay there.

Who are you to strip rights from people, or to pass absolute judgement upon others? In fact, who has this right? If there was no "legal and political lingo," wouldn't it just be the individual against the angry mob? Just to clarify on your view, DĂ©esse, who decides who is sane? Is it purely to be based off of empirical data?

To answer the question given, no, no such thing will happen, because a negative view towards pedophilia has already become enmeshed within society. Pedophilia is not something that many even bother questioning, as well as rape, murder, et al. It just is "wrong." And therefore this idea justifies itself. Sort of how people frown upon murdering kittens.

**Tries her absolute best to refrain from ranting**

First and formost, in my opinion, hurting a child in any way is the most horrible thing in the world. The whole Amish thing...yeah, that's about 2 hours away form me...I'm very familiar with the area and the kind of people who live there, being as I'vemade friends there that I do in fact keep in touch with and see every once in a while. It's horrible what happened there...and whats even worse is that its all I see/hear on the news. The way my local news stations are reporting it really pisses me off as well. They seem like they're at some kind of Lancaster County Fair.

Now, on the actual thread topic...I...well...I really don't know what to say. I could go on and on about how I think Pedophelia is wrong...but the main point is...its hurting children...its just wrong.

Well it's entirely possible if they're going to start considering obesity a disorder and charge people more on their insurance to help in the research for curing and caring for this "obesity crisis" we're supposedly knee-deep in.

Somewhere down the line there's bound to be someone who'll stand up and demand pedophile equality just as there are those who argue for polygamy and those who marry animals.

Specifically*

Why should I have to pick my battles? If I attack some people who do wrong things, and don't attack other people that do wrong things.... ... That makes me lame.

My question is not "Do you want" my question is "Do you think there will be?"

I agree about hiding in a cabin if that happens. There are limits to what I will put up with, and that is one of them. However I do believe what you did in the classroom was a good thing SK. Teachers are not supposed to teach their opinions on matters like that, they are not supposed to show their political views, religious believes, etc because then it is considered to be an unfair amount of influence on a developing adolecent/child that needs to learn to think for themselves.

... now if that would also apply to parents I think we would enter a golden age, but it will never happen.

I hope not. I know in Canada they are trying to raise the age of consent back up to 16 from 14 which I think is absolutely great.

I think any adult who takes advantage of a child (in any way, but especially sexually) needs some form of punishment. If he/she is mentally ill, then he/she should be given help but also cut off from being able to have contact with chidlren. I don't really care if touching little children is the most enjoyable sexual practice for them. It's wrong.

And as for Pedophile sensitivity training.... there is no way in hell that I would take part in such a class. If our culture goes that far down the toilet I'll buy a cabin in the woods and hide.
