An Ex of mine hanging out at my house pulled a book I'd lent her out of my bag
to read some of it. SHe opened the book and bent the cover entirely around,
from the middle of the book cracking the spine and tearing a couple of the
pages.

I think my head nearly exploded trying not to scream in panic and grab the book
out of her hand. I try to take exceptional care of my books. I don't frequently
succeed because I have so many books that my bookshelves are full and I have
stack after stack of books piled around my room.

He's back in town for a bit Rosy, might want to give him a call or something. I'll send Jacob after him if you like.

But yeah, like I said Rogue, I'll get it back to you as soon as I finish it.

And Belial, I know how you feel when you talked about returning that manga to your friend. I feel TERRIBLE if something happened to something I borrow. I always hate feeling like I've been inconsiderate. Thankfully there are understanding people out there.

Lol, reminds me when I was lending you my Sailor Moon DVD's that you felt bad because you kept forgetting to bring it when I was around. It was so cute thought when you finally remebered . But I wasn't really too worried about it since I know you'd take good care of them.

Overall thought, when I lend things out, they always make it back in good condition.

About the only except is when I lent one of my magic books (brand new, hadn't even read it) to my friend Matt. He said he's bring it back in a week. That was about a year ago and he's moved to Las Vegas by now. The irony of this is, when I flipped through the book the first time, I saw a spell to cast on items to lend out so you guarantee to get them back and wanted to do that to the book.

First off, I'm not pissed (or even annoyed) with either of you two for having my things.

My Tao of Pooh already had quite a bit of wear on it from being in various bags, so I know there are creases on the cover and such. I'm not too worried about it.

Zabuza, I also have your Incredibles.

I'll be glad if I even get these books back, regardless of the condition. I'm just fucking annoyed with her response to my requests. The first time I brought up wanting them back, months ago in an IM after an hour of messaging back and forth, she said, "Oh yeah, sure, they're yours after all," and then disappeared without a "bye," a "ttyl," or anything.

See, I always feel like a bitch when I ask for something back. Why is it so hard? It's especially harder if it's something that was a loaned to a friend who you've lost touch with or even had a falling out.

My old best friend, Stephanie, who was my best friend from when age 5-16, has a lot of my things that I want back, but I can't bring myself to ask because it feels rude to call her out of the blue just to get things from her.

I just don't get why there isn't more common sense among people who borrow things. I suppose it is my fault for not learning that lesson each time I don't get something back, but I always feel like I have to be nice and loan some things out.

Oh, I have you Kwoon, and you have my 2001. Just so you know.

So, never gonna get those books back then, are you?

That reminds me, I must return your Tao of Pooh. I have like a chapter left to go on it, but a good read. I've done my best to take care of it, but I think that my room might have gotten to it just a bit, I can replace it if it is dinged up too bad though.

Anywho, I know how you feel about lending books out and having that stuff happen. I lent DarkGuardian my copy of Order of the Phoenix after I was done with it and when I got it back pages were bent and coca-cola had been spilt on it. Come to think of it, he still has my copy of Lord of the Rings... I shudder to think of what has become of it.

Lent Venomouslobster one of my books last fall... he left it in his car on a hot day and the binding glue actually melted. It destroyed the book, but I let it go since it also got three of his own books before the temperatures went down... he still owes me a new copy of that book though.

I'm not too particular about my books, so long as you can still read the text. I can't stand it, however, when the corners of the pages are dogeared.

One time a friend loaned me a manga... and I put it in my bag, where it got squashed underneath a textbook... I felt so horrible about giving it back, I offered to pay for it to be replaced, and was nearly in tears... but he was kinda like... eh?

You would expect so. I can't count how many of things have come back broken or destroyed.

I feel sick everytime I get one of my books back and there are creases in the binding, it's ripped, or the cover looks ragged.

Interestingly enough, I loaned the same friend that I mentioned before, a copy of Animal Farm. It went to 5 different people before it got back to me. Obviously it looked defaced and so on, but each of the people who borrowed it, were apparently annoyed with the condition I had it in. They all complained to Emily that it was too perfect and you couldn't open the book all the way, so they took it upon themselves to break in the book.

Um... it's NOT your book. You didn't have the right to do that. If you didn't like that it was too perfect, borrow it from the library where who knows how many people had their hands on it.

I'm lucky, since whenever people borrow stuff from me, they give it back like it was before. I do the same. I mean, isn't it common courtesy?

Wanna know what REALLY gets under my skin?

I'm really getting tired of the things that I loan out to my friends feeling like pulling my own teeth when I ask for my things back. It's not out of spite, it's just if you're done with it, give it back!

Don't loan it to other people!

Don't damage it and give it back pretending there's nothing wrong with it!

Don't suddenly think it belongs to you!

And especially don't sell it!

I don't know what it is about people and their consciences where borrowing something from someone suddenly means it belongs to you and you can shit on it if you like.

I'm EXTREMELY particular of my possesions when I loan them out. My books are immaculate and look like they're never been opened.

One of my best friend's in high school, Emily, borrowed books from me all the time. Often enough when I asked for them back, she either forgot she even borrowed the book and didn't know where it was or believed with every fiber of her soul that it was hers and I was lying.

A year ago, I found one of my books (which she took from me while I was reading it, a while before) in her car. It was ripped up, wrinkled, and looked like it had aged 20 years, and I pointed out that it was mine. She got indignant, thinking I was claiming her property and mentioned that I was probably mistaken and she was planning on loaning it to her boyfriend. Gah!

This made me somewhat nervous, because just before that she insisted on borrowing my Preacher graphic novels, so she could show them to her boyfriend.

It's been over a year now and they've since broken up. I've recently been trying to ask for the books back in random IMs, since we don't talk much or see each other in person any more. It's not as though I'm IMing going, "WHERE THE FUCK ARE MY COMICS?!" but more like we'll talk for a time about all sorts of things and then I'd gently bring up the books and how I'd like them back. Half the time, her end suddenly goes inactive or she signs off without notice.

A couple days ago, she IM'd me to say that she just loaned half of them to her friend, Ray. And this was after I was already approaching her for them back.

WHAT THE HELL?!

I want those books back. At store value they're almost $20 each and there are 9 of them, sure I got them for cheaper from other places, but that's beside the point. I'm also worrying that these things are going to come back looking like shit now.

This isn't even one of the worst cases I've ever been through.

SERIOUSLY, is it that difficult to just give something back?

Anyone got any horror stories?
