When did you go to Harvard? Did you? If not, by your logic we shouldn't be listening to you.

I think you see the problem with that line of thinking now...

As Drizzt said, translating it changes much of the meaning. I do think that this is a largely irrelevant issue compared to some others, though I do understand why people are upset about it.

I agree with Bush on this one..

Jesus christ, I'm not going to sing the Mexico national anthem in English or the Japanese national anthem in French!

They played it on a local Latino radio station, and they got many complaints... from Spanish speaking people. The idea of translating it so that those who do not know the language well can understand it is nice and all, but like it was pointed out some things are lost in translation.

And the president's approval rating is somewhere around 30% last I heard, lowest in US history. You don't need a Harvard degree to call him an idiot with results like that in your face.

well from what i've been hearing on the news...

the translation isnt perfect. i think they changed a lot of it on purpose too, which is why some people are mad. whereas, on the other hand, if you're in america, it's kinda more polite if you'd at least learn the language.

for me, i just don't think it really matters. but from what's been going on lately, i guess this would be the last straw for the people who are against the illegals.

Hobo: go to Harvard (I don't care how you get in) and then complete a Masters Degree... then maybe someone will listen to what you have to say.... maybe then you'll be smart enough to know whether or not to call the President stupid

Actually from what I can gather from most of my teachers at school is that it was ok for them to sing it in spanish.. but by translating it into spanish you destroy most of the meaning that it has.

Most of you should know that translating changes most of it around, no matter what your translating.

Also they may not have been singing it at big events and such, but they were playing it over the radio, in which in some cases that could be bad

I agree with the president. And as a side note, I don't think I've ever agreed with him on anything else.

An announcer at a local Irwindale race track decided to announce the infamous words "Gentleman, start your engines!" in Spanish. Needless to say, everyone in the crowd was pissed, as I would be.

This is a predominantly ENGLISH speaking country. Speak ENGLISH.

The president is an idiot, I just ignore him and keep hoping 2008 would get here already.

Understand what you're country about in various languages is a good thing and diversity is a good thing (most times).

The president doesn't even represent half of the Americans anymore, what are his ratings at now? 20%? 10%? I'm really curious as to why someone in his own circle has not shot him yet for stupidity.

It's not like it's being sung at major events. It's merely a statement. America is a diverse country. We have a large Spanish speaking population shouldn't they be able to show and understnad their countries anthem?

I agree it shouldn't be sung at major events because then we'd have to sing it in every language. I don't think the President should be saying it's wrong, though.

The constituion was written in English.
The Bill of Rights was written in English.
The USA speaks mostly English.
The National Anthem was written in English.

I have no qualm with the Anthem being translated into Spanish nor do I have a qualm with American laws being translated into other languages for the knowledge of how our country operates. The national anthem should however not be sung in Spanish at major English speaking events like baseball games and events along those lines.

Learning to speak the anthem in Spanish for Spanish class or club or just for fun doesn't really bother me. Just as a respect to the country and the people; sing the song in English when you are in the presence of a English speaking event.

If the event is like a unity sort of tribute than sing it in your own native tongue and show what pride you may have for the country.

An immigrant who moves to this country is 100% obligated to learn English. If they don't want a green card, live with native speaking friends/ relatives and can live a decent life without too much trouble then why bother learning English. If you are planning on moving into more socieable areas where English is the major language then you should learn the language so that you may function in society and have an easier time.

If I was to move to France I would want to know the language at least 90% before going there. I don't want to come off as unintelligent or unprofessional.

So George Bush claims that our National Anthem should not be sung in any language but English. He said this after hearing the National Anthem (same tune, same meaning) sung in Spanish.

He also said that any immigrant is obligated to learn English. And compared it to, " If an American moved to another country they are obligated to learn that language."

What do you think?
