Kidnapping his own mother at gunpoint and threatening to kill his stepfather have landed a former Phoenix resident in prison for 10 years.

Christopher Lee Roby, 38, of Boise, Idaho, pleaded guilty Wednesday in Jackson County Circuit Court to felony charges of robbery, kidnapping and being a felon in possession of a firearm, as well as a misdemeanor count of pointing a firearm at another person. Prosecutors moved to dismiss 10 other criminal charges in exchange for Roby’s plea.

A Jackson County sheriff’s deputy shot at Roby after he robbed his mother and stepfather and fled their Rogue River home on July 13. Roby, however, was not injured. Two days later, Roby survived a suicide attempt in the Jackson County Jail, where he hanged himself with a bed sheet before other inmates untied him.

Roby’s mother was standing outside her home on Millers Gulch Road when he arrived at about 3:50 p.m. He threatened her with a sawed-off shotgun and dragged her inside, said Beth Heckert, chief deputy district attorney for Jackson County. When his stepfather called 9-1-1, Roby threatened to kill him, Heckert said. The couple did not appear in court Wednesday.

"The victims are just really afraid of him," Heckert said.

Roby demanded cash but stole some prescription medications from his parents before driving away. After emergency dispatchers radioed a description of Roby’s Oldsmobile Cutlass Sierra, sheriff’s deputies spotted the car near Patrick Elementary in Gold Hill and pursued is through the city onto Highway 234.

Deputies halted the Oldsmobile with a spike strip near the highway’s intersection with Ramsey Road. Deputy Greg Schuster fired on Roby when the suspect leaned out of his car pointing the shotgun. Roby then dropped his weapon. A grand jury later cleared Schuster of any wrongdoing.

Circuit Court Judge Ray White ordered Roby to spend 10 years in prison under Oregon’s mandatory sentencing law.
