Ditto. I just didn't care about the damn class. Mom tried forcing me to take it. She saw the error of her ways and will never force me into taking another class I don't want.

Used to know about as much Russian as I knew English, but being 6 at the time meant that it was a pretty easy comparison.

I'm convinced that knowing music well enough is as useful as any language, and really don't want to take classes for a foreign language, Everyone says you'll need language classes for college but according to my band director back in middle school, musical ability can override that. I'll need to be fluent in Japanese if I want to do anything involving manga, or watching unsubbed anime(that would probably be good training). The Latin based languages I'd only want to learn outside of school, like when I'm 40 or something. I think my one of uncles can speak fluent German, he lived in Germany for two years a few decades ago.

(Japanese) Makura, I'm glad you're doing so well in that class -- it's such a fun language to learn that I wish it was available when I was going to school. I suppose it's not too late to take something in a college course, but I believe you miss a lot when you take a course like that. Practicing the language will definitely get you to fluency pretty quick. I have been studying for about 2 years now and I'm amazed on what I have learned so far.

Oh, and Xeo -- yes, we all know why you want to study Japanese. *stares at the Japanese in the layout and falls on floor laughing*

I'm taking Japanese right now. I have the highest grade in the class. It's cool because the teacher moves pretty slow and works a lot on association so we can remember all the crap..especially with the writing systems. There are three.

I do recall Pockets being annoyed with his Spanish class in college. They move a lot faster and expect yo uto learn independently which is really fucking hard by itself but it's difficulty degree double when you are dealing with things like culture or a language.

For anyone taking a language course. Hang in there, work hard, stick with i.t The pay off is worth it.

The only foreign language I know is Indonesian. I used to know what everything means and I could translate it into english, but now, I know how to count and name a few things. It's what happens when you leave high school in year 11...

Japanese would be awesome to learn. They offered Japanese at South (where i went to high school), but they took it out of the course schedule. My freshman year they were only offering Japanese 2 so no new students could enroll in Japanese. Sophomore year, it was gone all together.

I want to learn Spanish, finish learning my French, then the next language I'm going to tackle is Italian. I'll have all the romance languages down. Ok, not all of them.

Good luck to me!

I took a Semester of French and Spanish my 7th grade year. The courses really didn't count or anything, but yeah ...

Then I took Spanish 1 for a full year my 8th grade year, and nearly failed the class (pulled a very low C).

I probably just didn't put enough effort into trying to learn it, but I just couldn't "remember" how to write things out. Speaking the language out loud wasn't all that hard, but our teacher seemed pretty tough on us. I bombed about every test, we'd have vocab, matching, and everything, and I just hated it.

Ever since then I've pretty much refused to take a Language course. Even though I supposedly need 2 Credits of Foreign Language to graduate, I haven't taken another one yet (and I'm a Senior, so it's not like I can change my mind now) and my counselor has never brought it up, and tells me I only need Math and English. So, I'm just not going to worry about it ... but, it won't surprise me if I have to take a course in College.

Yeah, I wanted to take Japanese. I thought it would be cool to know, with that knowledge I could maybe play videogame imports, and watch anime and know what they're saying, but I just don't think I could do it.

I took two years of French in high school and passed both of them with an A, however I hardly remember anything now since I didn't practice it. Took three semesters of Spanish in college, but those were much easier since I am spanish speaking. I just took them to improve my writing and reading of it. Actually, my spoken spanish improved a great deal as well.

Try Latin. Try taking a year of Latin and not learning ANYTHING. When the old teacher retired and the new one came, the new one almost had a mental breakdown because she had to teach two years of Latin in one.

So then theres us. 7 kids dropped the class in the first month alone. I've failed all but one quiz. And if anyone fuckin' chastizes me about it I swear you're gonna get it. Last years teacher didn't give a shit about the students she had. She tried to take away my credit for that class - I went to a credit review meeting and the teachers who were reviewing my credit were surprised at why she was doing this to me. Everyday I was one minute late to class, at the most one minute. This ended up happening 26 days, adding up to a total of 26 minutes that I missed of class all year. And there was a policy then that if you were late to first block within the first ten minutes of class (and yeah, this was first block of the day, and I walk to school) then it doesn't count as a cut or tardy. I dunno if I'm making any sense, but all that matters is that the teacher wanted to make someone else feel shitty because she was a lonely, 500 pound, 70 year old woman. And I felt bad at first, until I realized why she was like that. I don't care if I sound like a bitchy teenager, cut me some slack, I am a teenager after all, and this is how it looks through my eyes; the bitch is a bitch and she's gonna die soon, so at least she could've done something nice for once in her miserable life!

RAGH!!!

Yeah. So I don't understand Latin at all. And apparently it's the most difficult to take in my school. I took french for two years and that was easy as all hell. This though, this is insane. Its just ridiculous, but I might as well stick to it to make myself look smart. Thats why I took it, just so I could tell people I knew Latin.

LoL, good point. Plus, French and Spanish are both Latin based, so in a way, French will help me, but it's already gotten me in trouble when my teacher asked me to spell the English word "class" in spanish letters and I spelled it in French (c-l-a-s-s-e).

And I was studying, like "what is her name?" my brain was like "Elle s'applle..." NO! "Se llama..."

That was me when I was taking German. It is a lot harder to take a language class in college than in high school because of how much faster you move. You get lost a lot... but at least Spanish is a fairly easy-to encounter language, so you can get good practice... unlike German. Honestly, how many people do you randomly encounter that speak fluent German?

How many of you are taking a foreign language class? Now how many of you are taking a college foreign language class?

Back in High School, French was soo easy to learn, there was a whole 9 months to learn a tiny fragment of the language...

Now in college, taking Spanish, it is hard for me to do the work with so little instruction that I am used to. We have our first homework assignment due next Wednesday (started class on Monday, class is every Monday and Wednesday), and there are a lot of words in the homework that I don't understand.

GAH!

LoL.

How many of you have felt Foreign Language Anxiety?
