Yeah, DWB is a big deal here, to be honest. Not as much as in other places it seems, but still. Its just suspicious the way the police are handling this, pretty much as you're pointing out as well, with their perspective given more than fact, etc...like, you're sitting there in a busy place while being detained like that kid was. Of course they didn't notice his complaining. And who is to say that there wasn't anyone who did and just didn't do anything about it simply because it "wasn't their problem", which of course is another problem within itself. Plus, it seems that medical records show that this was pretty much sudden as a result of trauma from that night. The kid is a minor so unless his mother permits, most of the information will go through more of a vetting process before being made to the public.

Plus, they didn't mention that ALL of the officers around were women. I'm all for Equal Opportunity Employment, but due to sexual harassment reasons I'm pretty sure that you're supposed to be frisked by an officer of the same gender unless its impossible. Like, shit, when they were practically patting people down for Flyers games, they had a man and woman at every other turnstile for each gender.

In this particular case, its hard to believe that they were entirely innocent, but its even harder to believe that they deserved what happened (it was probably just some mischief teenagers are prone to pull.) and as police AND adults in this scenario, they ought to be held to a much higher standard.

As the bigger situation is concerned, police brutality and just the all around racism surrounding it is freaking horrible on SOOOOO many angles. You're absolutely right, this isn't the only, first, OR last of these things to happen. And there are soooooo many crooked law enforcement members out there that they're not only making it dangerous for the victims of their nature, but for the actual good and honest personnel that truly just want to help people. Eventually something's got to give with the good ones standing up for this shit on a much larger level than they already have.

What stories I've seen have not included the police's perspective more than their report, "Well, he didn't seem to complain about anything during those 8 hours we had him."

We haven't seen the arresting/frisking officer or know her name or have any statement from her regarding why she stopped him and his friends.

Also, in typing this into Google to find more information, I started typing "Philadelphia" and it got through the "Phila.." portion and suddenly popped up with "Philadelphia testicle" as the first result.

Still, there is the whole phenomenon of DWB (Driving While Black), in which it's been shown that people of color are more likely to be stopped or detained for no reason, simply because of racial profiling and such.

Again, there haven't been many details regarding the kid's run-in with the police since they haven't released more information than what's in the linked article. We don't know what he was doing other than being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

<3 Thanks! I always screw it up by just striking it out. :p

But there's a lot that goes into these kind of stories too. For instance, in this one, regardless of any other information, any debate on whether they did something wrong or not, a cop is trained to handle situations without molesting minors. There is absolutely no excuse for that kind of "accident" from a police officer, in my opinion. What actually happened to this kid was wrong regardless of which side of the coin people can bring up.

Due to local knowledge, however
Spoiler:
those kids should NOT have been in that particular area like that, yes, they had a game, but when the games go on, they ARE supervised around there. Like crazy. And Ms. Joyner is not exactly a truthful woman. She knows what her kids are up to and covers for them for the sake of the school. Its not as good as they pretend they are.

I haven't read up too much more on this because honestly, this is less of a local travesty than it seems to be otherwise. Not that no one cares about these things, especially when it happens to kids, but I'm willing to bet there's a helluva lot more to it. Even if this kid in particular was as great as they say he is, which I can't help but believe he is, he was probably hanging around the wrong crowd. If it wasn't him, then SOMEONE had to pull something that upset somebody.

The thing that bothers me, A LOT, is that regardless of what they did, whether or not they deserved to be picked up and have their parents called (which in most cases is what should be happening, rather than the additional bullshit that happens to people like this), there is still something suspicious about the behavior of the police in this matter. Like, someone made a mistake in handling these kids, which is bad enough, but now its being covered up with simply saying "disciplinary action will be taken."

Spoiler tag's just these brackets [ ] with "spoiler" in between to start and "/spoiler" when you wish to close the tag. Don't use the quotation marks.

There's been an unsettling amount of bad cop stories coming out (see the Kelly Thomas thread) these days. Not sure if it's really a surge in bad behavior, that they're covered more by the media, or if social media's playing a bigger role in it and people are voicing their anger more than they used to about these things happening.

This kind of thing happens ALL the time here. Philly is a big place, but in a lot of ways its very, VERY small. NE Philly and other suburbs vs the inner city neighborhoods are completely different worlds, but otherwise, yeah....

I forget how to do the spoiler tag...so, I'd rather others discuss first. :p

Source

So a straight-A, African-American high school basketball player was suddenly stopped by Philly police, a female officer cuffed and frisked the teen and allegedly popped his testicle, yanking on his genitals.

His family is looking to press charges, and attorneys are saying this is a clear-cut case of sexual assault.

Thoughts?
