Those are some fascinating stories, ladies.

Belial, I definitely recommend looking into your mom's side. You never know what you'll find out. If you can sit down and talk with someone, even better.

I started trying to record my grandmother's story a couple years ago before she got too... well... senile to be able to figure out what's going on. It's difficult to talk to her these days because she either can't hear you and you have to repeat yourself five or so times and shout in her ear or she can't recall things any more.

I asked her about life in the Philippines, WWII, being interrogated by Japanese and almost killed, and coming to America.

I wish my grandfather was still alive. He died when I was 11 and he was a really interesting man.

I want to try recording my dad's dad, since he was in the military during WWII, but I'm not particularly close to him. In fact, I haven't spoken to anyone on my dad's side in nearly 10 years. When I was in high school, I sat next to him at a family gathering and tried to get him to talk about being on a naval vessel hit by kamikazes and he wasn't interested.

Let's see... I know my first ancestor (on my dad's side), to come to the United States was Andreas Huber, in the 1800s sometime.. He Americanized his name to Andrew Hoover. While I was in Germany, I heard a tale about a woman exorcist of sorts with the last name Huber, and think I -could- be related to her. Especially with her attitude according to the tale (She was going to be hanged and when asked if she had anything to say, she said "I forgive all of you." Such a Hoover thing to say. XD)

ummm. I'm related to the President Herbert Hoover and the outlaw, Jesse James. I'm fairly certain there's more, I just can't remember at the moment.

I don't know much about my mother's side of the history book... though I wish I did. :-/

Lost records and lack of money to pay for research makes a lot of my family history murky, but I do know some things. I know that to some degree I am related to both Robert Louis Stevenson and Commodore Perry on my dad's side... the Robert Louis one is creepily obvious to those that have seen my dad and a picture of RLS... the Perry one is more vague.

For my mom's side, I know my great great grandmother had Jesse James visit the family farm while they were in town... they got fresh horses and left money to pay for them tied to the fence. My great grandfather helped build the Pony Express memorial in St. Joseph, Mo and a great uncle died in an explosion in an Armour packing plant there. Supposedly the Seippel coat of arms hangs in Nuremberg Castle... though I am not certain of that... and supposedly it used to be Von Seippel but the von was dropped. Also... well... one of the German family members that stayed there was in the military in WWII and you know what that means.

I really want to learn more about the family, I think it would be really neat... I just don't have the three grand lying around to hire a professional.

I was wondering if anyone here has done any work tracing their family history. Do you know about any of your ancestors?

My dad's sister is conducting research on our family genealogy and found that her 10th great grandfather (my 11th, obviously) was Stephen Hopkins. He had come to Jamestown, Virginia, after being involved in the shipwreck of the Sea Venture, which may have been one of the inspirations for Shakespeare's "The Tempest." He sailed back to England and came out with the Pilgrims on the Mayflower. Since he wasn't in with the Pilgrims' cause, he was one of "The Strangers." He's one of the original signatories of the Mayflower Compact.

I just find this stuff fascinating.

I previously only knew about my grandparents. My mother's father was a freedom fighter against the Japanese in the Philippines. His wife's brother, my great uncle, was previously captured by the Japanese and forced to walk in the Bataan death march to a concentration camp where he died.

Anyone else have any stories?
