Haha! That is sound reasoning.

I think it's an abomination for some of those things to be considered "official", but passing things from generation to generation isn't supposed to be easy. It's harder work for us and past generations to instill the difference between "slang" and intellectual conversation, that's all I guess.

And yet, ironically, his symbol has yet to be added... probably because they still aren't sure exactly what it is.

I know this is an older thread...but really?

I mean, there are certain things where I just sit back and say "even though I'm rolling my eyes and wishing things weren't true...I try to remember that the same was thought of The Beatles...and then I start to feel old.

But seriously...symbols? Prince, you cheeky bastard, this is all your fault.

I would link to it as proof, were it not $300 a year to access the Oxford English Dictionary online.

And no one knows what English will be like a decade from now. For all we know, "Smell you later!" really will replace goodbye.

For some reason I want to blame 30 Rock for the muffin top addition, lol. But yes, embiggen!

But yeah, I can just picture English papers a decade from now with students arguing that OMG is a valid "word" because it is in the OED.

They also added OMG and the slang term for "muffin top." No joke.

I'm still amused that cromulent is in there now. We shall hold out hope for embiggen.

I mean, in a way it's both evolution and degradation. Language is always changing and to not include new words and their definitions as they come along, we fail to grow. At the same time, it would be a shame that future generations might look on "LOL" as an educated inclusion to their vocabulary.

But again, many of the words we say are "degradations" of passed words. English is constantly bastardizing other languages: Latin, Greek, French, German, Spanish, Arabic, etc.

There are some that argue that it is the shifting of language and all that... but I draw the line at adding symbols. I mean, are we going to put the smiley face in next?

This curiously-named fellow over at Jul summed up my opinion:

Someone over there needs to be fired, seriously.

Brief synopsis of above link: They are adding things like "LOL", "Wags", "Dot-bomb" and "<3" to the OED. Do you think that this is a honest portrayal of the evolution of the language, or is allowing such internet terms into the definitive lexicon of the English language only permitting its degradation? I don't think that many of these terms should be allowed legitimacy that the OED gives them... I mean, would you allow such colloquialisms in an essay for an English class?

Now, this is not to say that I disagree with every change they have made that is listed in that link. I think the addition of cultural food names is good, as is the addition of the Aboriginal name for the didgeridoo. Those things make since... things like BFF and fnarr fnarr do not.
