I was expecting Paarthurnax to teach me the shout "MAMA MIA" the entire time...

Did you guys know that the voice actor who voices Parathamax (The talking Dragon) is also the same voice actor who voices Mario?

Kinda hard to believe huh.

I burned myself out on this after 80 hours, anyone else? lol, I think whenever I get back into it I'll just pickup my game and focus heavily on following the main quest to finish it up.

Ironically enough I dropped it to play Fallout 3... haha, which I probably like even more. Definitely my sci-fi bias talking there, but yeah I just like the world/story a lot more here than in Skyrim.

Your guards complaint reminds me that I absolutely hate the instant death thing (against YOU) sometimes, I was even getting one shotted from a damn archer one time. That pissed me off so much. Very annoying...

Yeah my friends and I were saying the same thing about the war here compared to the conflict with the NCR vs Legion or whatnot in New Vegas, which was handled well and both sides had "character" if you will. But with this, it's as you said, just underwhelming and both sides seem like dicks. I don't even know how much weight they'll have on the game at anytime, but I might just be the bringer of doom to both sides.

Heh, in NV I went with the NCR but I was usually a "Smiling Troublemaker" with them or something.

So yeah, I'm going to be even more stoked for the next Fallout being a bigger sci-fi fan in general, but I also hope Obsidian is doing it. Their writing in NV was good stuff.

Ultimately, Skyrim's greatest failing is at the same things New Vegas did right.

The civil war wasn't fleshed out enough, and the extent of it seemed to be "both sides are dicks".

The end sequence just didn't feel climactic enough. A trek through the mist, beating up a ghost, and then yet another dragon fight, except infinitely easier.

Even the first time you fight the final boss, it feels no different from any other fight with any other dragon.

And as you've noted, almost every quest comes down to retrieving an item, beating the hell out of someone, or beating the hell out of someone so you can retrieve an item. Diplomatic solutions are almost nonexistent.

And this would be forgivable if the action were better.

But even the dragon fights wore thin after a short time, because they were all the same. The first few were awesome, until that realization set in.

And stealth tends to be... unreliable. Chug invisibility potion, go into Stealth mode wearing no armor, still get seen by Thalmor. What.

Oh and in one dragon fight, I was attacked and killed by guards because I tried to interrupt a breath attack with a shout. I was not happy about that.

How would you compare it to the new Fallout's? Granted, I guess they're different. I like how in both the old and new Fallout games, if you go with a lot of speech you can pretty much talk your way through everything. But so far from what I've seen here in Skyrim, speech is mostly there for bartering I guess... I've seen a -few- Lie / Intimidate / Persuade options pop up, but not much at all. Dunno if I'll bother putting any perk points in speech.

I'm about 30 hours in myself now and loving it. I would say...

- Story isn't nearly as good as New Vegas.
- Gameplay is a lot more fun and dynamic than NV, that along with the game being bigger (from what it looks and feels like), I could see it lasting longer than the 60 hours I poured into NV. It just seems like I haven't really seen the full extent of the game at this point, when 30 hours into NV and I had pretty much seen it all, had guns I never changed out, things like that. Skyrim seems to offer a bit more in terms of gameplay, though NV had a good story and other things that kept me going.

Well, I finished the main quest.

You know, for killing SPOILER in the middle of SPOILER, it still seemed...

Underwhelming.

It's still infinitely better than Oblivion, which is an extended case of "Do this. Oh. You failed. Do this. Oh. You can't. Follow someone else who can," and is better as an action game and an RPG than Oblivion. To say nothing of the superior worldbuilding; there's a believable conflict among mortals, not a simple case of Evil Empire vs. Good Kingdom (something sorely lacking among RPGs), and the ancient Nord barrows and Dwemer ruins are well-designed, not Oblivion's generic crap.

Incidentally, dwemer ruins are back! Yay!

However...

The action still falls rather flat. It's still a matter of numbers for any of the big fights; the only chances you really get to use your wits are against normal enemies in ruins where you can exploit the traps. Dragons? Chug the right Resist potion, apply an Aversion to [element] and fire off some dual-cast destruction spells. Or, if you're a fighter, Resist pot, Weakness to Poison poison, health damage poison. Throw in the occasional Shout for flavor/Breath interruption/desperate attempt to not die because of an ill-timed ambush.

Skyrim is decent as an action-RPG, with stronger worldbuilding than many, but no meaningful variation in the action. There are some memorable quests, and indeed the final one could have been...

Except for one problem.

Spoiler:
Alduin was pathetic. Especially given the three allies you were forced to have... At least the first time he put up a decent struggle. Hell, the guy you had to fight to get into the Hall of Heroes gave me more trouble.

Ultimately, it's better than Oblivion, and I'll certainly play it again. But Morrowind is still a better RPG, and that's kind of the point. Skyrim's a good game, just... not quite what I was hoping for.

Now! To be positive.

The faction questlines seem drastically shorter, at least the College of Winterhold, but much, much better. It's not easy to make a good Mage's Guild questline, but they really pulled it off here. I made a new character just to go through that one after my Dark Brotherhood character joined for spell vendors.

Skyrim: better than sex

... that is starting to be how I am viewing this game. And I'm female. Take that, gamer stereotypes!

... I just dropped $90 on the special hardback collection of the first four Song of Ice and Fire novels, so it might be up to Ben to purchase this "as a gift to ourselves" unless I actually get something for my birthday. Or at least until the next paycheck or so.

What the? I swear I thought I posted here again letting you guys know my friend let me borrow his copy... yeah, that happened. His excuse was since he'd be busy with Zelda anyways coming out tomorrow, haha and well I wasn't going to argue.

10 hours in two days so far. Goodbye life.

Best perk ever. You go from not one-shotting anything to one-shotting everything ever.

By the nine. I'm at level 49 in my Sneak skill...I want that perk so badly.

Speaking of the Dark Brotherhood... Level 50 Sneak perk + Dark Brotherhood gloves = 30x backstab damage. I've 1-shotted a dragon with an upgraded Blade of Woe that I lifted off of the Dark Brotherhood leader. /flex

I spent money I didn't have on this game. And do not regret it.

My first character got deleted by my roommate. He was a Nord warrior dual wielding longswords like a badass. Fuck the police.

Now, however, I joined up with the Dark Brotherhood right away. Does anyone else find it interesting that the last Listener was your character in Oblivion IV, and that all the tenets are gone? Iunno, I just thought it was cool.

Game of the year. Every year. Just became a Werewolf. I don't need no stinkin companions. I can just transform and create total havock in any place I want to go. Only issue is that those pesky silver weapons and people tell me I stink a lot. Kinda like real life!

Like I said earlier, though... if you're unsure whether or not your PC can run it, stick to a console. If down the road you think you're able to pull it off on the computer, trade in your console copy for the PC copy! If you don't plan on modding the crap out of it (just enjoying the package that Bethesda is giving you), the console is a perfect option.

If you cac; get it on PC. Sure the DLC is nice on the Xbox a month early. But I plan on modding the hell out of this game the same way I did Morrowind back in 1998. So if you want content: I can bring you content. Plus it feels this game was pretty much ment to be played on PC anyways. And if you have a nice ass PC then you are pretty much experiencing this game the right way.

Once I beat it and join the modding community I'll be adding shit to this game so you guys can try out and play along with. It's too bad that when the mods you can't get achievements. Just get them first before you start playing the mods then geez
