I guess ths is a wee bit of a bump? I haven't been here in a while and just NOW, after 12 posts, started looking at the dates on the threads. XD

Nice one on pegging yourself with the "nerd's love Star Wars" sterio-type. Truthfully, I love when people break some "sterio-typical" rules, so I'm getting a bit of a kick outta this thread. But ready...ready...wait for it....another sterio-typical rule being broken...here it comes...

I'm a nerd too, and I don't think it's all that terrible that you haven't seen any of these things. XD (Dude, I get beat up, practically when I don't like something that most of my fellow nerds like, so I know how it feels to feel like you're under the gun a bit. XD )

The films/stories are great and all, but...to each their own. Me personally? I LOVE Star Wars. Always will. Above all else. I can literally say the films have helped make me who I am today. But not because it's sci-fi or whatever, truthfully, when it comes to sci-fi, there is MUCH better out there. But, film/art is a big passion of mine, and Star Wars is the movie that made me first question how it was done. Being VERY young and seeing those lightsabers go off, or objects move, I was instantly curious, and of course as I got older, I realized the many other things that went into making these movies. The make-up, set design, costume design, character design, etc...it's not the ONLY movie that has a lot of work put into it. They all do. It's just that it's the first that made me pay attention to those things.

LOTR and Star Trek fit into this idea of seeing the behind the scenes, as well. Fantastic movies/series, but they all were some sort of pioneer in the making of film. If you don't watch them, so what? You don't. There are a TON of things that among my peers, I'm considered "crazy" for. Among my film geeks, I was bashed for not seeing "The Graduate." (I eventually did though, and regret every moment of it besides the soundtrack.) But if you do watch them...then you do. **shrugs** If you were to watch them, then awesome. Whether you like them or not, it's one more person to talk to about them. One more perspective. **shrugs**

I've never seen Star Wars either and unfortunatley my desire to watch it has dwindled over the years. Between my family, my friends, my teachers and the media I already know most of the secrets and suprises of the films and consequently feel the only reason to watch it now would be to see the visuals.

Of course, to watch them and be in the atmosphere of the movies might have me gripping my seat even if I know what's going to happen.

As for LOTR...my friend thinks they're boring, I think they're a cinematic masterpiece, you'll have to decide for yourself once you get some time to watch them...

I was about to ask, "Are you guys talking about 'Enterprise'?" but that wasn't awesome at all.

There were tons of attachments to the original material, but seeing as it was an alternate universe, they didn't have to tie so many. But yeah, anyone (Trekkie, Trekker, or neither) could enjoy the recent J.J. Abrams-produced movie.

But just a few of those ties:

Spoiler:
Scotty was assigned to this deserted icy section of a planet for beaming the admiral's dog, which didn't come out where it was supposed to be transported to. The dog in question belonged to Archer, the captain from the series, "Enterprise."

Kirk takes the Kobayashi Maru test, which he hacks into so he could win in the no-win scenario. This references back to "Star Trek 2: Wrath of Khan," when they show Savek taking her test and failing. It's then revealed that Kirk is the only person to have passed the test and they mention his re-programming the simulation.

When we first meet McCoy, he mentions that he's just been divorced and the ex-wife took the whole planet. It's been referred to in the original material that McCoy used to be obscenely wealthy and owned his own planet like billionaires own islands.

Kirk spends most of the movie trying to figure out what Uhura's first name is (which was never revealed in the original series or movies). In the movie they called her Nyota, which was what she was sometimes called in the books.

That's some bullshit right there! XD

It does have attachments, they're just subtle.

Yeah, if you feel like Star Trek could be a little overwhelming or don't know where to start... check out the new one, that has no attachments to any previous movies or TV shows. And it was very awesome indeed.

Yes, Bitmap. You are a bad person. It has nothing to do with the fact that you've missed these films, mind you. Though, missing them does add to the badness.

In all seriousness though, you need to watch Star Wars. Screw the prequel trilogy too. Instead of doing a drunken game night, do a sober Star Wars night.

Lord of the Rings was pretty kickass too, though I have a hard time sitting through an entire movie in one sitting. I just have a hard time paying attention.

Let's not forget Star Trek, either! If anything at all, watch The Next Generation because Patrick Stewart is sex. The movies are epic as well... You need to at least see The Wrath of Khan. The new one that just came out is amazing as well!

I personally really loved the LOTR movies... and I do not find them boring at all, but I am a big D&D nerd so that is me.

Star Trek... at least watch the movies. If you dad is a huge fan then you probably would know who most of the cast is in each series so you don't need much intro. At the very least, see Wrath of Khan.

Star Wars... that one is honestly the shocker to me because I would have pegged you for a fan. Ignore the prequels, just watch the original three and you are good.

And for the record, no, you are not a bad person... just deprived.

Are you a bad person? Yes. Watch them, xD.

You should know that every single person I have met offline who has not seen Star Wars, I have forcefully (heehee, forcefully!) exposed to a Star Wars marathon. Its a serously amazing series. Start with the originals, though. The prequels are alright, but not quite legendary.

As for Lord of the Rings...these movies are epic. Don't start with the extended versions though, as much as I love them, I recognize that they're for fans only.

And Star Trek, I've seen all the movies, and a bit of the TV shows, all of which I enjoyed. Its good, but not miraculous. You should definitely watch the new one, though.

Funny thing is that my dad loves Star Trek. And I mean he LOVES it. There is not a day where he compares real life with the episode he watched.

As for videogames; I have only played the Lord of the Rings RTS game. I forget what it was callled but I do know it was an RTS game and that it was actually pretty good.

Finally; as for me seeing these movies: I might down the line. I just don't know when. I mean I want to and all but it's just I don't want to -right now-. Get what I am saying?

There's no excuse for Star Wars dawg. Do you know Darth Vader is arguably the real hero? Or is he? Been my favorite movies since I was 5 (original trilogy). Start with those, not the new trilogy. Surely you've played some of the videogames down the road? It's a universe that I will never tire of.

Star Trek I've personally only seen bits and pieces of the original stuff, all of the second movie, and I'm not sure after that. I've seen a lot of the Generations era stuff (think Patrick Stewart). Fun stuff, not something I recall too much though.

Same with Lord of the Rings. They were amazing films to me, but didn't turn my world upside down. I don't really revisit these maybe since they're all over three hours long I think.

But yeah, Star Wars. No more excuses. Do it.

You're not bad. Honestly, with how much time is passing it's not shocking to me any more when it comes to what people have never seen.

I used to be amazed when I'd hear teens say they'd never seen an episode of "I Love Lucy," but with every new generation there's fewer and fewer people who've seen it.

Star Trek and Lord of the Rings, I could easily see not being exposed to these days, and heck, even Star Wars since it's not played everywhere, all the time.

I'll put it to you this way. I was in a photojournalism class a couple years back. Our teacher was talking about Polaroids. One girl didn't know what the hell Polaroids were and ventured a guess, asking, "Are those the things you get on your ass?"

If you haven't been exposed to something, who cares? Whatever, right?

Seriously.

I tell this to everyone who ask me this and their jaws drop. That's right, as much of a nerd I am; I have never seen the movies posted in the thread title.

What is stopping you from watching them?
Time, really. That and the money to actually buy the movies. I could rent them but I have no interest in watching the entire trilogy.

What all do you know?
I know Darth Vader is Luke's Father. I also know (Thanks to Clerks) that Lord of the Rings is Boring. But hell, I could watch it.

You are a bad person for not watching those movies
Do you think so? I am talking to you Xeogamers.
