Yes, but saving data on what you search for is a bit different from this now isn't it?

I can't argue with you there. I guess I'm one of the few people who wouldn't be bothered by it.

The thing is, I hate how it's like a distrust by our government. Like, I know I've got nothing to hide, but I still hate the idea that I can be tracked by my mobile phone. I hate how it can possibly be turned into a microphone from a remote location.

Invasion of privacy, no matter how small, is generally discomforting, even to those who are doing nothing wrong.

They're probably doing it to prevent terrorism and not so much crime Not surprised much. This database, they wouldn't be sifting through each and every email, call, etc. I don't know much about it, but I'm sure what they look for are key words or phrases used by people that the database comes across, if they do happen to save a tidbit of info, which I'm sure they might. Even so, if a thorough investigation is needed they'll go through the saved information and do one. It may be an invasion of privacy, but not as much as people are panicking over.

And unless terrorism and/or crime was getting really out of hand I very much doubt they would resort to saving the content of all communications information. Going through all that with no need to would be an extreme hassle and a half. Not even the smallest country could handle going through each email sent by the people of its nation. Sure, you haven't reason to be disgruntled about, but at least it shouldn't affect you. I personally wouldn't even worry about it too much.

"The Communications Data Bill (2008) will lead to the creation of a single, centralized database containing records of all e-mails sent, websites visited and mobile phones used by UK citizens. In a carnivore-on-steroids programme, as all vestiges of communication privacy are stripped away, The BBC reports that Home Secretary Jacqui Smith says this is a 'necessity'."

Taken from here, courtesy of FX for sending me the link.

I really don't know what to think. At first I Was furious that they would even think of making such a database, although further reading on the BBC link said that no content of the calls or emails will be stored, just time and location sent and received...

But still, even information like that is really digging into he standard person's privacy. As far as I know, things like phonecalls and emails aren't used that much in British crime. It's generally some guy beats up/knifes/runs over another accidentally/in self defence/while drunk/on purpose. It just annoys me that such a database, to my own knowledge anyway, will do little to help towards solving crime, which seems to be the reason such a database has even been concieved.

And also, what's next? If it's alright to save the date and location of emails and phonecalls, what's the say in a couple of years they'll try to pass something which lets them listen in to random conversations? Then later they pass legislation which allows all messages to be recorded? The whole point is it's supposed to protect me, I understand that, but it shouldn't strike me with fear as well.
