Everyone's heard it before. You can say "Eugene" or "Eli" (whichever you were about to say). 
As for Lucky Star, it starts to get quite good after Ep. 3, I think. The first few are a little slowish, but after that, it's omega-fun.  |

There is a lot of different anime references . Especially from The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya .
