Yup. The storyline takes place in the early 1960s. The Westcoast (Alaska through Baja) is under Japanese control, while most of Canada and the Midwest from Montana down to Texas and all the way to the Atlantic Ocean are under "the Greater Nazi Reich." There's a strip in the middle deemed "The Neutral Zone," with a very tiny American Resistance working out of it.

I don't want to spoil it by detailing it more than that, but it's essentially a low-key science fiction show. I mean, it was written by Philip K. Dick.

My Christmas at home was so low-key I spent the last week still feeling like Christmas was on the horizon and was still thinking there were Christmas songs on the radio (of ALL things?!) and time to go see Christmas lights and mail out Christmas cards. I still need to get something for Brandon. I got my parents a membership to the Huntington and bunch of DVDs Dad had been wanting.

My gift haul was a leather bag I'd been wanting (from Brandon) and a set of pajamas and a Target gift card from my parents.

Didn't hear from any other family except a phone call from my Sacramento cousin.

New Year's Eve made a bigger statement in my mind, I guess. Brandon and I met up with some of my co-workers at Grand Park in downtown L.A. and we took in the sights like the projections on the City Hall building counting down, and then the fireworks at midnight.

We've all gotten too old and a lot less limber for sexy times.

Who named it that, anyway? The name used to change several times a week and then it just stuck.

Imagine this is like walking through some small town in "Fallout" and this was just the last movie with its name on the marquee, and the red, transluscent letters are falling off.

Just saw "La La Land" at one of the movie palaces in Hollywood. It's quite the love letter to Los Angeles. The story's OK, but it's all about the way it's shot.

Just got home from a friend's baby shower. My god, I was yawning my face off and ready for bed at 7:30. The couple and I were joking about how we're so old and tired while our elders were still blasting music and drinking and would be well into the night.

Perhaps this will come off as blasphemous, but I've never been a Nintendo person.

I've just made the time, I guess. But then again, I don't have kids.

If whatever the thing is is happening while I'm at work (like whenever my friend invites me to her all-day pub crawls), though, I'm most likely not going to call out for it.

I pass out around 10 with the TV on most nights. Bran and I have a system. I have to go to bed before him, because his snoring would prevent me from falling asleep. So he looks at porn or whatever at ungodly hours, then eventually crawls into bed.

Though we've got the alarm set for 6:15 for me, I wake up at times like 4:15, 3:33, 5:45 (not enough time to fall back asleep before the alarm, so I end up just getting up at that point), and MAAAAAAYBE get some more sleep before I absolutely have to get up.

Stressful nights I wake up more frequently and then remember there's something bothering me and I can barely sleep at all. Most recently this was over my "lack" of health coverage. I'd gotten a letter from my health plan saying my work requested my coverage be terminated. I had recently switched from the high plan to the low plan because the price for coverage was going to go up to $140 per paycheck from the $87 I was paying, but I didn't ask for my coverage to be completely WIPED. Called the HMO and was told I had NOTHING with them. Called my HR person who's never available and doesn't return calls. Anyway, it was EVENTUALLY sorted out, but I wasn't getting much sleep.

Heh, funny that I fare better at work these days when it comes to exposure to germs. My first year doing this I averaged a cold a month.

Er, uh, fact: I'm obsessed with the opening number from "La La Land."

Finished season 2 of "Man in the High Castle" last week. It's very good. And now the long wait for season 3.

Currently in limbo looking for another show, at the moment, though Bran and I should really pick up "Vikings" again since it's back from hiatus. We just haven't been in the full mood to sit and watch it rather than the TV being on as background noise to our surfing the web or reading.

Still another half-a-year 'til "Game of Thrones."

Reading "Born on Third Base: A One Percenter Makes the Case for Tackling Inequality, Bringing Wealth Home, and Committing to the Common Good" by Chuck Collins. He's a great-grandson of Oscar Mayer and gave away his fortune so that he could make his own way.

I'm about a third of the way through it, and I recommend it. It's less memoir than putting a lot of the economic issues we have in perspective. He argues for the super wealthy to put their money back into the system and pay their fair share of taxes, among other things.

Other than that, finished the first omnibus of "Lone Wolf and Cub."

Our car died yesterday, so I had to push while Mom steered. She kept hitting the brakes just as I was gathering momentum to make it up a slope, explaining later that she was worried the car was going to roll back over me.

So when it got stuck on that slope and was too heavy for me, I had to tell her to get out and help me. She puts the car in park and sets the parking brake and proceeds to try to push.

I didn't used to, but now I do.

I'm weird, I guess? I prefer my cold coffee drinks iced, but not blended. Tried to order one of those "available for a limited time only" frappucinos at Starbucks as an iced beverage and they stared at me like I'd sprouted a second head and it was singing "Touch Me in the Morning." They answered, "Uh... We can't do that..."

Good grief, I've given up on Starbucks. Everyone's running in with recipes for secret menu items and previously they'd go, "Sure! We'll make whatever you want." Now you order something OFF THEIR MENU that was introduced nationwide and they stare at you blankly.

It's all Peet's and Dutch Bros. from here on out when it comes to established big name coffee for me. Eh, sometimes Philz.

We're getting lots of rain, and I'm loving it. Of course, it also means people drive worse than shit here. Suddenly they're cutting people off more and speeding and swerving everywhere. It's astonishing.

Other than that, I have no complaints. We needed the rain so bad and were it not for the fact that the sun comes out periodically and it gets hot, you'd think we were going through a monsoon.

Awesomely, Northern California's getting A LOT of it, which means we're going to be getting more clean water to the rest of the state.

I woke up this morning ahead of the alarm (not unusual) because the rain was so loud (not typical here in L.A. County)

Heh, it's like we're so used to it being completely sunny and hot here and then still getting extreme weather warnings on TV because Riverside and San Bernardino counties were getting thunder and lightning storms. Lucky bastards.

Loads of zinc. Most often in the form of Cold-eeze cough drops, but I also take supplements. While vitamin C does help boost immunity, zinc cuts colds short by keeping the virus from multiplying.

Otherwise lots of water and bedrest.

It's actually been pretty kick-ass.

This Monday's a paid holiday (woo, three-day weekend!) and they finally delivered our Christmas bonuses on Wednesday (was NOT expecting a check. In the past, we always only just got a Vons giftcard), which came with 40 hours of paid vacation time.

On Friday I came in and they all sang to me, and gave me a $40 Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf card, a cup of mocha and a couple little donuts. In the afternoon when I got back from my afternoon club my boss told me in a stern voice to come in his office and close the doors, which had me scared. When I sat down he showed me the paperwork for a raise.

After work a couple of my co-workers and I ran out and bought flowers and brought them to the hospital to see our fellow co-worker who just had her baby. He ALREADY has teeth!! WHAAAA!!

Yesterday was pretty cool too.

My parents took me to Canada for Expo '86 when I was 1. I have no memories of any of it.

Mexico, a few times. But not the main portion, just Baja. Went for day visits a lot when I was a kid, and then went a couple times to help build houses for poor people in the hills. Have only been back once in the last 15 years.

Fun fact: a couple times when my parents dumped me off at my grandparents' house while they went to hang out with their friends for an evening when I was a kid, they'd occasionally run down to Mexico and back. It was only a couple hours one way.

I had this sort of a cold that only affected my nose. It came on very suddenly while I was standing out in the cold with Stitch, waiting for our table to be ready at a sushi place in Little Tokyo. I had a stuffy and runny nose through the rest of the week, but no sore throat, headache, or fever (mostly.)

Didn't miss any work, but yeah, this shit was inconvenient.

Ordered a pair of gloves from a shop on Etsy in mid-October as a prep for winter. The gloves still haven't come and the seller keeps giving me the run-around, saying the Post Office must have lost them with the tracking progress on both of the "attempts" cutting off at "USPS awaiting item." I just opened a case with Etsy, asking for a refund, and I feel like an asshole.
