Tim Tams are a chocolate-covered sandwich cookie from Australia. The company that makes them sells the same cookie here under the name "Arnott's Original," since Pepperidge Farms went and trademarked the name here. They only have the original flavor here and not the lovely caramel, double fudge, etc flavors that they have in Australia. When my parents went to Down Under last year I told them not to buy me any T-shirts or trinkets and just hit up a grocery store and pick up some Tim Tams since I'd missed them so (my mom's best friend lives in Sydney and would bring them when she visits).

Anyway...

How one does a Tim Tam slam:

You take the cookie and take small bites out of two of the four corners, diagonally from each other. Essentially you're making a straw.

You then take this cookie and place one of the bitten ends in a hot beverage (coffee, tea, chai, etc. We use Moroccan vanilla and cinnamon tea) and suck at the other bitten end. This draw the hot beverage upward, thus liquifying the cream filling, softening the cookie and melting the chocolate on the outside. But it will hold together just long enough for you to stick all of the melty goodness in your mouth.

My mom thought it sounded silly and we came off like a bunch of rowdy people playing a crazy drinking game when we kept going, "Suck on it!!! Now stick it in your mouth!! YEEEEEEAAAAHHH!!!"

But she REALLY loved doing Tim Tam slams and did several on her own.

It's how the Aussies eat them, and it's brilliant.

I spoke with the marine biologists at San Pedro's Cabrillo Aquarium about it and they were saying that at most it's just been that slightly irradiated tuna that swim in certain currents and travel long distances are turning up here, but the water is safe.

There were some intense protests this weekend. Source

Some were arrested, most for refusing to disperse when the cops told them to leave, but there were a couple arrested for vandalism, one for robbing a grocery store, and another for assaulting a TV news cameraman.

As a side note, the son of one of my dad's best friends just graduated from his police academy and the only job he could get right away was with Fullerton PD. He started there last week. Baptism by fire.

Strawberry...

If it were Jamba Juice, it's be one of those chocolate or peanut butter Moo'ds, but one of those every day for a month would probably lead to intense weight gain.

Otherwise, I'm not much of a smoothie drinker.

Very cool.

I tried picking up "Runaways" again. I'd read the entire Brian K. Vaughan run as it printed, years ago, and I read the Joss Whedon-written arc not long after it came out too. I thought Joss' run was the worst up to that point. It was like bad fan fiction.

But now that I've started the Terry Moore run... Ugh... It's beyond AWFUL.

And the art style is completely different for the entire series' and that's just as annoying.

I've still got a couple more volumes to read. I really don't know how I'll finish this with the writing and art being such eyesores.

It's taken me a week to get a quarter of the way through "Dead Wrong," because I keep putting it down and reading other things.

I've only been around Matthew once in the last few years, and he was fairly quiet (His girlfriend however kept crawling all over the server's ass for forgetting one thing or another, despite his serving 20 people. It was a dinner with my dad's best friends and their families).

I just asked my dad how Matthew was doing, since he has lunch with Matthew's dad at least once a week. As it turns out, Matthew only started on Monday, but was immediately issued his "bat and hat." Riot gear, in other words. They're anticipating more protests, he says.

Well, some good news. One of the cops who'd been acquitted was going on about how he was going to get his old job back, but the Fullerton PD has rejected his request to be reinstated.

It's a bone. Fullerton PD's trying to calm the masses by at least refusing to bring back the people who caused this whole mess in the first place.

Yeah, while they don't have Tim Tams in this country, there ARE Arnott's Original.

And there's the faint hope that you can find the copycat ones Pepperidge Farms make.

Heating up the other half of my bacon cheeseburger from last night's dinner with Mom and Dad.

After that dinner, went over to Christina's for gaming and meat pies.

Well, I had a good birthday last week.

And this past weekend was pretty good. Brandon and I wandered about L.A. visiting people's shrines to Santa Muerte, getting free burritos and seeing our favorite pirate band. Different girls grabbed me for dances since I was headbanging in the front.

The next day was spent taking my parents to different places they'd seen Huell Howser visit. Afterward we picked up some food at Trader Joe's and had a little picnic in the park. Monday, we taught Mom how to do Tim Tam slams and that was ridiculously fun.

Last night I got to see Christina for the first time in nearly a year. We gamed a bit, and it was great to be with her again.

I don't answer my own phone, if I can help it. I HATE talking on the phone.

I go through weird anxiety when my phone rings and Brandon's not around to answer it for me, no matter who's calling. It could be my parents. Doesn't matter, I freak out either way and then suck it up and open the phone (I still have a flip phone... seriously).

Man, it's been a couple years exactly since the last time this thing was filled out.

I'm pretty bored, and hey, this could stand to be filled out again.

What was the last...

...thing you ate?
- Meat pie at Christina's last night. She made these nice, little pies from scratch, which we had while setting up D&D characters.

...person you talked to on the phone?
- Lee. Asking if I wanted to come help organize his storage unit, then saying he was on his way over.

...person you e-mailed/private messaged?
- Russell. For some reason he didn't get my recording of the news, so I had to re-share it in Google Docs.

...person you hugged?
- Christina.

...person you kissed?
- Brandon.

...time you laughed?
- I'm watching Bob's Burgers, at the moment, so some time in the last couple minutes, probably. My last really big laugh was around 2 in the morning when Brandon and I were looking up videos of failed Peter Pan productions. Soooo many hilarious flying gaffes.

...time you cried?
- Not entirely sure.

...movie you watched?
- Last thing I saw in the theater was The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. Last thing before that was Metallica's Through the Never in IMAX 3D, which Lars Ulrich came out to talk about since we were seeing at a theater around the corner from where Metallica formed.

...DVD you watched?
- Cannibal: The Musical.

...video tape you watched?
- *Presses eject* Looks like it was Back to the Future Part III.

...song you listened to?
- Fleetwood Mac's "Rhiannon." Gearing up for American Horror Story tonight.

...book you finished?
- Last real book was The Steel Seraglio, but the last graphic novel I finished was Saga volume 2.

...heart-to-heart you had with someone?
- I think my answer is permanently going to be Brandon. Not sure when I last had a "heart-to-heart" or what it would have been, but chances are it was with Bran.

...person you met?
- New people working Ops at Anime L.A.

...person who died in your life?
- There was a girl I knew from Gallifrey's Ops team who was a passenger in a drunk driving wreck, but I didn't know her all that well.

...new food you tried?
- A couple of those BurritoBox burritos people have been losing their shit over.

...new thing you tried (event, action)?
- Because I'm super-bored, I'll list off the last five new things I've tried:
1. Playing a game Christina is running.
2. Took my parents to Galco's and the Lummis House. I'd been before, but they hadn't.
3. Got a butterbeer frap from Starbucks.
4. Visited different Templo de Santa Muertes.
5. Saw Dread Crew at The Joint and danced with different girls.

...time you went around the house in just your underwear?
- After a shower yesterday, I had to run down to my parents' room for something wearing only a towel (they weren't home). Not sure about the actual question, though.

...time you weren't fully sober?
- I really can't remember the last time I was buzzed. I mean I drank a lot of cider at Marty and Becky's on Sunday, but didn't feel anything.

...you "geeked" out?
- Probably when we recorded the podcast on Monday and Russ and I were talking about the first episode of "Black Sails." For some reason, I didn't realize they were playing with "Treasure Island" characters, and my mind was blown.

...thing you read in the bathroom?
- Terry Moore's first volume of Runaways, and frankly it was appropriate. It's TERRIBLE.

...bargain you made?
- Hm. Got free burritos on Saturday night? I haven't really bought anything more than food and gasoline lately.

...thing you planned?
- This past week of events was pretty hectic, though it didn't seem like it on the surface. Lots of planning went into it.

...award you won?
- Got one of those "Big Damn Hero" ribbons working Anime L.A. The department chairs only give them when you accomplish some feat. Got one last year, my first year working as staff, for finding the three lost children. This year I got it for working 20-hour days.

...piece of toast you had?
- Sourdough, with homemade raspberry jam.

...present you gave?
- Gave Christina two 10th Doctor sonic screwdrivers.

...porno you saw?
- Believe it or not, I haven't watched any sort of porno in forever. I really can't remember the last I watched.

...song you sang in the shower?
- I might have hummed something, but I really can't remember what.

...song you had stuck in your head?
- Probably something by Stevie Nicks since so much of her music gets used on American Horror Story this season.

...thing you marked on your calendar?
- I haven't really been keeping calendars, instead just documenting what I've done on each day. The last thing in that case was that I took my parents to Pieology on Monday.

...errand you ran?
- Picking up my latest holds from the library. I got the first volume of Guardians of the Galaxy and a nonfiction book called Gadaffi's Harem.

...drink you had?
- Diet Pepsi. We're still working through the 36-count case the green room people gave me when ALA was over a week and a half ago.

...cool thing you found?
- The place we went to shoot up zombie targets with an AK-47.

...time you brushed your hair?
- Jesus... some time last week. My hair has been so friggin' easy to tangle that I just don't bother any more. It's all balled up and hanging out of the headscarf I've got wrapped around my head right now.

...person you talked to over AIM, YIM, etc?
- Since the messaging system on Facebook makes it look like a freaking instant message whether I want to just read them straight through in a regular screen or not, I guess the answer to this is Russell.

...thing you bought?
- Different, glass bottle sodas. Mmm birch beer.

...game you played?
- D&D at Christina's last night.

...new place you visited?
- OK... again I'll name five:
1. The Joint, in West L.A.
2. The new Gelson's on Second and PCH
3. Gun range in downtown L.A.
4. LAPD Museum
5. Some caves in Tarzana, which we hiked to.

...thing you celebrated?
- My birthday.

...dream you had?
- I'm not entirely sure. I know I did dream last night, but I can't remember what it was about. Something about some of the entertainment groups Brandon and I are fans of from San Diego.

...thing you dressed up for (costume/formal/etc)?
- Went in garb to the new Renaissance faire in Ventura County.

...website you visited outside of the board?
- Facebook.

Honestly, it trips me out to see massive blocks of text written in cursive. I was at a museum reading this confession letter written by a guy in the '20s who kidnapped a little girl for ransom and then killed and dismembered her body. It's six pages or so in cursive with him calmly talking about his motives for doing all of it.

Anyway.. remember when you got excited about a project and thought about all the cool things you were going to do with it, but then just put it all off 'til the last minute and turned in something half-assed anyway?

The NAMM show is going on right now. It's a tradeshow exhibiting all the latest music gear, be it instruments, sound equipment, etc. It's closed to the public except for press, NAMM members, and their guests.

It's reached the point where loads of famous people attend to check out the latest wares or are invited to be seen there as part of their endorsement deals with some of the manufacturers. It's a big deal to get to go now.

My boyfriend, Brandon, is a sound engineer with a degree who works as an audio tech at a city auditorium and plays lead guitar in a metal band.

He is not considered qualified to attend.

It's essentially just people who sell or manufacture the goods.

A seedy pawn shop owner or the person who checks bags at Guitar Center can get a badge because they work for some place that buys and sells instruments, etc.

Brandon has gotten to go in the past after standing outside, asking people for their badges and getting one. He just wants to see the equipment. I mean, his last birthday we went over to Sunset Blvd to the part with the factory stores for Carvin, Mesa-Boogie, Sam Ash, Guitar Center, and so on, just so he could try out amps.

Why I'm pissed, though, is the high number of people among my Facebook friends who are getting to go this year who DON'T belong there and are getting unforgivably shitty about how they're there and YOU'RE NOT LOL!!! OH, HEY, STEVIE WONDER JUST WALKED BY. SO LONG CHUMPS ROFLMAO!!1!

And I'm not mad about the people I know in bands who probably know someone who got them in. They've been quite gracious, just posting the occasional picture.

No. I'm talking about people who don't even play instruments, don't work in the industry in any sense. People who somehow know someone who got them in and are now just bragging about it all over Facebook as though they're at Comic-Con crossed with E3 crossed with some super-secret, high-end brothel party house. I'm telling you... UNFORGIVABLY shitty.

I'm just seething on Brandon's behalf.

Grrr...

So a straight-A, African-American high school basketball player was suddenly stopped by Philly police, a female officer cuffed and frisked the teen and allegedly popped his testicle, yanking on his genitals.

His family is looking to press charges, and attorneys are saying this is a clear-cut case of sexual assault.

Thoughts?

What's a bit puzzling is how I'll click on something on the board and it's as though I hadn't. My cursor doesn't have the loading wheel nor does the tab for the board. The first few times I think I ended up clicking everything about a dozen times apiece before I realized it was all just slow to react.

It's like even Chrome and my computer don't acknowledge the board's goings on.
