Posted on 01-10-11 04:49 AM, in Yearly requisite thread: "How Was Your 2010?" meme Link
Happy New Year! Bored? Feel free to fill this out too.

1. What have you done in 2010 that you have never done before?
- That's a VERY long list of new places and events I've been to, foods I've tried, and people I've met or interviewed.

Along with those, though, I had to get stitches, I spoke at USC, guested on a radio show, declared myself a double-major, did a Renaissance faire out-of-state, got stung by wasps, walked the entire length of the new Hoover Dam bypass with my mom, had things I wrote get bounced around the internet, had a photo I took published into a university textbook, and hiked a bunch of new places.

2. Did you keep your new years resolution from this year, and will you make one for next year?
- For the most part -- try/do/learn at least one new thing a day. I'm letting it ride this coming year.

3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
- Not this year. But here's hoping Michelle has better luck in 2011 and is able to carry the one she conceived on Thanksgiving to term.

4. Did anyone close to you die?
- Not particularly close, but we had to go to my great uncle Irving's funeral in Las Vegas last month.

5. Where did you travel to in 2010?
- Went to Arizona a few times, the Bay Area a couple times, and went to Las Vegas in mid-December.

6. What would you like to have in 2011 that you lacked in 2010?
- 2010 was pretty satisfying as it was, and wishing for things only makes a person miserable. Even if I had more money, this sort of thing would just prompt me to wish for more.

7. What dates from 2010 will you have etched in your memory, and why?
- I'm terrible with remembering exact days, but probably Thanksgiving day since it was pretty darn cool. Hiked and saw all of these natural wonders and then ate on Route 66.

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
- I guess it depends. I won a bunch of awards from the Daily Titan for writing so many stories, but I think getting a picture into a textbook is probably the biggest for me.

9. What was your biggest failure?
- Hmm, not sure. I went for managing editor for the fall semester, didn't get the job, but in the long run this last semester was my toughest in terms of class workload. Also, I did a lot of fun stuff that I wouldn't have been able to if I had gotten the job. On top of that, I think this past semester's paper was actually pretty poor in terms of content and the letters to the editor and lack thereof otherwise really reflect that. So.. my "failure" in retrospect was lucky.

10. Did you suffer injury or illness?
- I fell walking up an escalator getting to class and ended up needing 8 stitches.

11. What was the best thing you bought?
- The BEST thing? Either my ceramic tankard, which I got at the Arizona Renaissance faire, all of my textbooks from last semester, or the last two seasons of "My Name is Earl" bundled together for $9.

12. Whose behavior merited celebration?
- This professor I interviewed who was getting ready to climb Mount Everest, which she did, and she's suffering from this really rare disease that's killing her.

13. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed?
- The answer to #12's husband.

14. Where did most of your money go?
- Into road trips and conventions. Comic-Con tickets alone were $200, and the room we stayed in was over $300 for 4 days.

15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
- There were two things actually made me skip - Arizona Renaissance faire (well... not really as I just got stitches two days before we went) and Maker Faire, up near San Francisco.

16. What song will always remind you of 2010?
- Probably "Separate Ways" by Journey. I listened to it non-stop for days and then it ended up used in the "Tron" sequel. Heh.

17. Compared to this time last year, you are:
a) Happier or Sadder?
- Happier, I suppose. Looking forward to all the great things in the coming year.
b) Thinner or Fatter?
- Most likely fatter.
c) Richer or Poorer?
- Hm, if we're talking money maybe slightly richer as my bank account isn't in the negative. Otherwise, richer in other aspects.

18. What do you wish you would have done more of?
- Doesn't #6 pertain to pretty much the same thing? I suppose, though, I should have hiked more and done more physical activities.

19. What do you wish you would have done less of?
- Hm, thinking about negative things and dwelling on the past, I guess.

20. How did you spend:
Halloween?
- Went to a comic book convention during the day, then later my boyfriend's band played the West Hollywood Carnaval. That night we helped break the world record for most people dancing the Time Warp at the same time.
Thanksgiving?
- The day itself was spent hiking and seeing gorgeous sights in Arizona.
Christmas?
- At home with my parents, boyfriend, and grandmother. Went for a short hike and then had dinner at this French restaurant with Brandon.

21. Did you fall in love in 2010?
- Not romantically (as I've already got someone I love in that regard), but I fell pretty hard for three things, otherwise: Hetalia, my straightening iron, and Thomas Jane.

22. What was your favorite TV show?
- Boardwalk Empire. House and Mad Men come in close seconds.

23. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?
- What the fuck is up with the negativity meme writer? To answer the question... I suppose there are people I dislike that I didn't before. Oh wait, no there is something I truly hate: Las Vegas' spirit of needing to stay relevant and modern. Yeah, yeah. DIAF.

24. What was the best book you read?
- The only novel I really read cover-to-cover was Bread Givers and it was pretty good. But counting graphic novels, I'd go with Will Eisner's A Contract with God.

25. What was your greatest musical discovery?
- Of the year? Probably Versailles Philharmonic Quintet.

26. What did you want and get?
- Now this is getting a bit abstract. OK, now the question makes more sense looking at the next one. What I wanted and "got" would probably be getting to go to every convention, faire, and road trip sight and I wanted to go and see. The biggest things were an interview with the creators of steampunk and a trip to a steampunk tavern followed by getting to go to a pirate rock show.

27. What did you want and not get?
- Whoever wrote this meme apparently didn't have enough of something or get what they wanted because this is the third question like it. Still wishing for a PS3, I suppose.

28. What was your favorite film of this year?
- Either Scott Pilgrim vs. the World or True Grit.

29. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
- Sang karaoke at midnight with friends. On the actual day, had lunch at this Italian place, and then went hiking, which turned into impromptu rock climbing trip (). Had cajun food for dinner. The next night some friends took me and Brandon out for Indian food, took us bowling, and then went for yogurt. Oh, and I turned 25.

30. What is one thing that would have made your year more satisfying?
- Seriously, man. Seriously. Honestly, don't know.

31. How would you describe your personal fashion concept of 2010?
- Layers! I've walked around in the rain in two coats and jeans and come out dry and comfortable. For trips in the snowy areas, I was fine with a thermal, a hoodie, and a coat. Otherwise, I wasn't trying to make a statement of any kind.

32. What kept you sane?
- Brandon and the promise that I could escape to some place on the weekend.

33. What celebrity/Public figure did you fancy the most?
- I sort of answered this already, but it's Thomas Jane and James Hetfield.

34. What political issue stirred you the most?
- There were a few things, but since I had to write a story on it and interview politicians: the cost of education and how the chancellor of my university's system is paid more than Obama.

35. Who do you miss?
- Navy. She refuses to get a Facebook and I'm rarely on LiveJournal these days.

36. Did you reconnect with anyone?
- Andrea. Ran into her at a release party for the sixth Scott Pilgrim book. Turned out she was taking the graphic novel class too.

37. Tell us a life lesson you learned in 2010.
- I'm still not entirely sure what I learned from 2010. Getting stung by wasps hurts.

38. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year.
- "Life is like a hurricane here in Duckburg.
Race cars, lasers, aeroplanes - it's a duck blur
You might solve a mystery or rewrite history."

You figure it out.

39. What plans do you have for 2011?
- Work internship. Graduate. Travel to Greece, Egypt, Israel, Turkey, and Italy. Halloween in Jerusalem... it's gonna be crazy.

40. What are your resolutions for 2011?
- Same as before. Do/learn/try something new every day.

That mostly happened to me when I was a kid. But I guess that kinda happened with "Warrior's Way, and in a sense, Forbidden Kingdom.

Finally saw it tonight, in 3D.

It had its moments, but I think I liked Number Two better. When they hit the final scene with Knoxville saying he was going to end the film, I nearly shouted, "WHAT?!?!"

What happened to Bam was not cruel enough.

I consider Arizona my second homestate. I've spent months, perhaps even the equivalent of years there.

In truth, it's still the wild west. People carry guns. They have to have "No Firearms" signs at restaurants and other public places. Those signs are more common that "No Smoking" signs.

Anyway, I'm not sure what I feel. I mean, it's tragic that people are getting shot up.

As for the WBC, while they're media whores, it's to the point that it's flattering. You know you're doing something right if they're picketing you, I guess. It's sort of like if The Simpsons or MAD Magazine parody or mock you, you know you've made it.

That's not to say that I condone their shitty attention-seeking behavior. They're parasites who go after heavily-publicized events and make up some ridiculous reason to picket it just so they can be camera sluts and get in the news some more.

Anyway, enough about them. Glad the congresswoman's health is improving.

Well, they aren't so much saying that soldiers are sinners as that their deaths are a sign that God is angry that we allow homosexuals to exist in this country.

Seriously.

AND they back picketing funerals because they say that a funeral is a practice of worshiping the dead and they argue that this is an act of blasphemy.

Them and Pat Robertson, who immediately announced that feminism and homosexuality were the cause for 9/11.

I'm re-watching the fourth season of My Name is Earl. I bought the third and fourth seasons at Target for $9 together. Gotta love those Day-After-Christmas sales.

While I'm not really up on or a true believer in astrology and horoscopes, it's been interesting to note the similarities between a person and their signs.

I've always thought of myself as a Capricorn through and through, and Brandon fits as an Aquarius.

Still, I suppose if there are changes in the astronomical part of it, what difference does it really make if one does not believe in it?

I mean, I was born in 1985, which most consider the Year of the Ox (fitting since I'm a Cappy), but looking at when the Chinese began and ended their year in the period I was born, I actually fall in the Year of the Rat, the year previous.

Long story short, I then read the characteristics for those born in that year and felt they fit too. Really no matter when you were born, someone's going to give you a list of things that you supposedly are and you're going sit there and go, "Yeah, that's totally me."

Excuse me. Need to release some steam.

FUCK YOU. FUCK YOU. FUCK YOU, postman. We've been waiting all day for Brandon's check to come in the mail so he can hurry to the bank to cash it since we're going out of town today. Because you STILL haven't delivered the mail, the bank is now closed and Brandon has to put the check through the ATM where the will hold the money for 5 business days.

We need to be in Bakersfield before 8, asshole. It's an almost 3 hour drive. Brandon's dad is taking us out to dinner for my birthday (which was yesterday, but he wanted to celebrate since we're driving up to see him).

GAAAAHH!!

Here's another one. Fuck you, Dad's clients, whom he invited over for lasagna tonight, a couple weeks ago, and then called to cancel an hour ago because they realized it was a 3-day weekend and decided to go out of town.

My dad has been THRILLED about this night. He ordered a special tiramisu from this bakery he loves and spent all week excitedly gathering his ingredients making sauce and noodles and baking the lasagna yesterday. And he and my mom spent today scrubbing the house, polishing the chandelier, pulling out the good china, everything.

FUCK YOU, flaky bitches.

I would eat the lasagna and tiramisu myself, but we're leaving as soon as that check shows up.

EDIT: FUCK YOU FUCK YOU FUCK YOU, Unemployment. The mail finally came and all that came was a birthday card for Brandon from his bank. He paid $60 for it the check to be express mailed so he would get it today.

Just wasted all day waiting for a check that didn't come... RRRRRRRARRRRRRRR ARRRRRRRRRGH!!!!!

Thanks, Dad, for once again coming through and giving us an advance so we could still go on our trip as planned.

Thank you, cool people who own the Museum of Death, for singing the Cerritos Auto Square song to me on my birthday and then showing me their Siamese turtle they keep in a tank in an area not open to the public.

Thank you, Brandon's dad, for offering to take us out to dinner and getting the greatest cheese fries in the world.

Ha! Thanks, guys.

Yeah, I'm old.

Had an interesting day, you could say. First stop was for rice pancakes in Koreatown, then off to the Museum of Death. They have a bunkbed from the Heaven's Gate mass suicide, the guillotined head of the Bluebeard of France, serial killer art (including some by Charles Manson), Liberace's taxidermied cat next to one of Jayne Mansfield's dogs that died with her in the car wreck, and a vast number of images and other mementos from killings and deaths over the years.

When we were leaving the owners took us to a close off area to show us their pet turtle, Heckle and Jekyll.

We also went for ramen in Little Tokyo, then visited the Time Travel Mart again, watched the sun set from the Griffith Observatory, and then got dinner with my parents at this English pub the steampunk creators told me they love to eat at all the time.

Right now I'm in Bakersfield, and it's 4 in the morning. Can't sleep. The boyfriend is snoring is so loud. We might run up to San Francisco as there really is nothing to do here in Bakersfield. We shall see.

I'm not sure about walking, but he pulled it out of a tank filled with water. When it tries to swim one side swims in one direction while one swims in the another and it pretty much goes nowhere.

Here's a video of it which the MoD put together before it reopened:

I'm in San Francisco, writing this from my hostel room just before we check out and hang around the city before heading down to Bakersfield to spend the rest of the trip with my boyfriend's dad.

It's been a fascinating trip thus far. We'll be back in SoCal in a few days.

I start classes again on Monday. With any luck it will be my last semester.
